Hpv and smear test results

I recently had a smear test where the results were that they tested my sample for HPV and as it was negative they didn't do any further tests and didn't look for abnormal cells.
I thought you could still get cervical cancer even though you don't have HPV?
Also, is it possible I could have got HPV in the past and it cleared up on its own and would that still increase my risk? Can it come and go, and if it can't is there any reason to get tested in the future if I am in a monogamous relationship?

This link should answer all your questions

Most sexually active people will get the HPV virus at some point and it rarely develops into cancer.

It seems like in the past, in order to get people to get their pap tests, the scare tactic "anyone can get cervical cancer, even if you haven't had many/any partners, even if you don't have HPV" was used.

Now that the HPV test is replacing the pap test, its clear all that wasn't true.
