Ok why is the verte feminine in this sentence:

Un cher grand pull en laine verte à pois noirs

but violet not in this one:

Les gants en laine violets

Any clues ????

Thanks

you don't accord colours that come from nouns (violet, marron etc.)

MrsDarcyIwish · 10/11/2018 13:02

In the first sentence the adjective describes the wool, not the jumper.
Feminine singular.
In the second it describes the gloves, not the wool.
Masculine plural.

That’s so interesting! I didn’t realise. Every day a school day.

Urbanbeetler · 10/11/2018 13:04

So who is right?

LaChatte · 10/11/2018 13:04

Hang on, misread!

LaChatte · 10/11/2018 13:04

It's the gloves that are purple.

LaChatte · 10/11/2018 13:06

The thing about colours from nouns is right though, but violet doesn't come from the flower (it's the other way round).

LaChatte · 10/11/2018 13:08

(Des gants verts en laine)

Shriek · 10/11/2018 13:12

Says the colour of the wool [of the garment] , in both, surely?

MarianneAgain · 10/11/2018 13:16

Salut @MergeDragons
is there a typo in this sentence?
Un cher grand pull en laine verte à pois noirs

because I really don't understand what a "cher grand pull" is?
Un très grand pull, un grand pull cher???

Shriek · 10/11/2018 13:17

Dear, beloved,

LaChatte · 10/11/2018 13:20

In any case, sounds like an ugly jumper.

Shriek · 10/11/2018 13:25

Vil

Thanks for the input folks - yes it is an ugly jumper. An expensive large green woollen jumper with black polka dots. - Please just don't ask why
