I always read it as auto-mayton and was surprised when I learned it was aw-TOM-a-ton. :)

It's like "biopic". The way I say it in my head makes more sense to me.

Aw Tom Ay Ton

Awe-TOM-a-Ton

If you look up the OED, you can check pronunciation of words too

Babybearsporij · 08/11/2018 21:55

Or-toe-May-ton.

EggysMom · 08/11/2018 22:04

Awe-tom-uh-ton (so definitely not an 'ay' sound in the middle)

The poster who said it's similar to 'phenomenon' put it best. But I cannot read or say 'phenomenon' without breaking into the Muppets song "Mnah Mnah" Grin

They've had a few on The Antiques Roadshow and always pronounce it Aw-TOM-ah-ton.

@EggysMom
"But I cannot read or say 'phenomenon' without breaking into the Muppets song "Mnah Mnah""
