Anyone got any experience with 'refusing' a parcel in order to get a refund?

I ordered a t-shirt from a US company that advertised on FB. A couple of days later I emailed them and asked if I could amend my order to add on another t-shirt. I got a friendly reply immediately, saying that they couldn't amend it, but I could a) place a new order for the second item, or b) place a new order for them both, and take advantage of reduced p&p, and she would cancel my original order.
I opted for b), but when I clicked on the link in her email it said 'the campaign has ended.'

Sorry, pressed too soon. Anyway, I found the original advert and ordered two t-shirts without a problem, then got back to her and asked her to cancel the original order, and forgot about it.

Now, two weeks later, I've had an email from her saying that the original order can't be cancelled because it's already been despatched, but that if I 'refuse' it when it arrives it will be returned to them, and when they get it safely they will refund me. This sounds a bit unreliable to me. Anyone got any advice pls?

I had something similar happen and it was fine - the delivery driver also acted like it was something that happens all the time.

That's useful to know - thank you.
