Would you recommend Cadiz in Spain??

I saw it mentioned as a less touristy part of Spain but don't know much else. Is it less touristy? Nice beaches? Things to see?

And if you wouldn't recommend Cadiz where would you recommend??

Thanks

No, I wouldn't recommend it. It's been a port on several cruises that I've taken and it's one of my least favourites. Run down, very little to do there. It's "less touristy" in the sense that it's not geared up for tourists, but due to the cruise port, there are tourists there anyway!

I love it! It was a cruise ship so only had a day there.... but can't wait to go back. I'd say a long weekend would be plenty long enough though.

CluedoAddict · 26/10/2018 20:37

No it's a dirty run down area.

Bloodybridget · 26/10/2018 20:40

I haven't been there, but we have friends who live in Spain and love it. A family with four DC who have gone there three summers running (staying outside the city) and an older couple.

It depends what you're looking for. I like the town, but don't know if I'd want to stay in Cadiz for, say, a week's holiday. Having said that the coast south of Cadiz, and indeed the whole surrounding area, is really lovely. We rented a place in Zaraha de los Atunes for a week and had a ball.

It was nice for a mini break - we based ourselves there, visited Jerez and flew out of Seville (after spending a day there). Any longer than that, probably not.

I don't know much about the beach - I think we visited the city beach but only for a cocktail probably. But sherry tasting in Jerez was fun!

We had a wonderful time. Just as a couple...it was part of the best hook day we had..ended up there as an extension of a trip to Seville..so maybe 4 days.
No tourists, small beach to laze on...this was about 6 years ago so maybe pre cruise ships. We were in the old town self catering in an apartment owned by a Brit who also ran the local Cuban pub!
We saw great flamenco and enjoyed lots of tapas.

I went this summer & loved it! We were there a few days in an Air bnb. Cadiz is spotlessly clean & food / produce is incredible (as is sherry / wine!) I didn’t like the beach so much - it was packed when we were there in August!

It isn’t touristy at all. We vowed to go back, possibly for a festival. We flew to Jerez & made our own way to Cadiz by train (spotlessly clean & punctual!)

Northumberlandlass · 26/10/2018 21:29

And definitely go to Casa Manteca!

waltzingparrot · 26/10/2018 21:33

It's my new favourite city. I was there in August just for the day and will be going back. Small enough to walk round but plenty to see, amazing architecture and different feel to different areas. Great food and fabulous ice cream shops with unusual flavours.

Part of the costa de la luz, it's where the Spanish go on holiday, so it was lovely to find a very authentic area . No British bars, not a lot of English signs , less English spoken - helps to have a bit of Spanish under your belt in this area.

Northumberlandlass · 26/10/2018 21:38

I agree Waltzing - very authentic & refreshing!
We asked our Air Bnb host for recommendations of where to eat & found some absolute gems! No one could speak English & we tried some interesting things....
just in case you see ‘Nettles’ on a menu...they are sea anemones 😬
