Apologies for daily fail link but www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6170649/BBC-DJ-Cerys-Matthews-admits-refuses-play-records-privileged-pop-stars.html
What do you think about this? Surely it doesn't matter when it comes to talent. In Lily Allen's case for example, the influence could've have been her famous parents and not just the private education. I can't imagine what music would be like without Radiohead or Joe Strummer and other musicians who've been privately educated. Ridiculous imo.

What a storm in a tea cup, this is just the DM’s latest way of criticising the BBC.
In effect, what she’s really said is the equivalent of me saying that I,ve been asked to choose my 5 favourite pieces of music but can’t decide between two that I like equally. In that case I may be more likely to choose the piece of music where the artist is more likely to benefit because they’re less known/don’t have slick marketing operations/are a woman in a male dominated society etc.

IMO she is articulating promoting less privileged artists rather than attacking or pulling down those who have had leg ups where the talent/enjoyability of the music is equal.

Damon Alvaro is state educated (same school as Graham Coxon).

Gawd, mumsnetters really don't like the oiks getting a leg up, do they? "I don't restrict myself to only two long haul holidays a year and drive around in a battered old Volvo so that Sebastian can be ignored by some woman I've never heard of who broadcasts at ten o'clock at night whatwhat."

I like her radio show, she does a great job at selecting a range of good music. Why shouldn’t she chose from a wider pool of music? Sounds like a nice idea to me.

HotSauceCommittee · 15/09/2018 19:48

I don’t hear her playing much Sleaford Mods, Lovely Egg or Fall records; they were all struggling wc artists when they started out.

ForalltheSaints · 18/09/2018 11:30

Cerys has denied the story (surprise)- maybe she fell out with one of the production team.

Interesting though if the number of journalists educated at private schools is a lot higher than in general?

I like her on the radio but she's a massive hypocrite. Her father was a surgeon for example. She could donate some money to a local state school for music resources etc.
