Hi - my friend needs to find a better job than she currently has, I've suggested an older clothes etc model (nothing weird/porn etc Hmm)
Anyone else a model of this age and got any tips?
Thank you

Hmmmm do you have the right site?

flumpybear · 26/08/2018 17:27

Don't know ... what's your suggestion? MN usually know about everything!

It’s a very unusual suggestion you’ve made.

And most models earn peanuts.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 26/08/2018 19:01

It seems a very risky way to earn a relatively small amount of money.

Is modelling something she’s been interested in before?

Emmageddon · 26/08/2018 19:03

Older clothes models are usually about 25. Check out the older ladies clothes catalogues like JD Williams - all young women.

Your suggestion is unrealistic I'm afraid.

It's a bit of a niche suggestion, not one that normally springs to mind when a friend says they need a better job.

What skills and qualifications does she already have? What is she interested in?

Has she looked at some of the help available from the national careers service?

Thank you, it was just a thought as she's in a horrible situation with being a SAHM for years so lost her career now her ex has buggered off, left her in debt and every month is shaving more and more off her maintenance and debt repayment (she had to take an IVA out for) - he's royally fucked her over ... she's on minimum pay now because she's worried as she's been out of her career for 10 years so thought it a possibility as she's very photogenic etc

She said I was better by stupid too Sad

I imagine you made her day! She sounds lovely and I’m sure she was really flattered even if she hid it!

HollowTalk · 26/08/2018 19:43

But surely the mature female models you see in catalogues etc used to be younger models, so come into it with decades of experience?

Ollivander84 · 26/08/2018 19:47

It doesn't pay great unless you're either exceptionally good or work nude levels. To start off you work for trade so for free, but you get images while building up a portfolio
Never ever pay for a portfolio/agency
The best models around that I see (and they're good!) are charging £40-50ph but have years of experience and a very strong portfolio
I've been doing it around 4 years as a plus size model and my rates are usually £25ph

flumpybear · 26/08/2018 19:50

Ok thank you for responses perhaps it was one of those silly conversations/thoughts on my part

Well maybe not modelling, but there will be other options out there. It sounds like she's lost her confidence. Show her the careers website - the skills health check would be a good place to start. She can ring a free number to chat to a careers adviser too.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 26/08/2018 20:01

(She might also be eligible for a face to face appointment if she'd prefer that.)
