This thread in Site Stuff explains www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/3338581-MNHQ-here-removing-the-90-day-limit-on-Chat-threads?msgid=80290028

They're gonna need a bigger boat.

TwitterQueen1 · 17/08/2018 14:05

DON'T SHOUT! I CAN HEAR YOU

PanPanPanPing · 17/08/2018 14:09

Twitter, I thought that a bit of shouting, in this case, was necessary Grin

AlonsoTigerHeart · 17/08/2018 14:11

PERPETUITY IS A GREAT WORD

Fun to say aloud

TwitterQueen1 · 17/08/2018 14:22

Actually I've just seen that MNHQ said "do give us a shout..." so I take it back OP. Grin Wink

I have no opinion either way.

Guienne · 17/08/2018 14:31

Not bothered really. If I want a thread to disappear there's always the 30 Days Only section.

NerrSnerr · 17/08/2018 14:31

OMG HOW TERRIBLE

or something like that. Does is matter? I'm sure people can figure out how to get to 30 days only if they're sharing something that can't be googled after a month (but fine to be searched or screenshotted beforehand)

picklemepopcorn · 17/08/2018 14:33

Can't say I'm bothered. May not have realised they went poof anyway. I do know it's frustrating when I go looking for a thread later, and can't find it.

paintedwingsandgiantrings · 17/08/2018 14:35

There's a 30 days section. What's the problem, I don't get it?

SistersOfPercy · 17/08/2018 14:43

If having something online bothers you then really you should be questioning whether you post it or not.
30 days is a bit misleading anyway, nothing ever really vanishes on the internet.

PanPanPanPing · 17/08/2018 17:33

I rather like 'perpetuity' too, Alonso!

Yes, sure, many of us know where the 'short-term/hidden' topics are .... but many don't.

What I'm saying is that MNHQ hasn't promoted this change openly on Chat to pre-warn those who don't.

OP posts:
EdithWeston · 17/08/2018 17:37

Well, as long as all threads started before the deadline still expire (because people will have posted on them in expectation that they will)

And they need to make it bloody clear during the transition (different colour, perhaps?) whether the thread is going to be ephemeral or permanent.

I think they've got this wrong though.

Ephermeral chat is a good thing. And I'd make AIBU ephemeral too. There are plenty of topics for those who are looking for worthwhile advice.

icebearforpresident · 17/08/2018 18:12

Meh, they all end up on the daily fail website these days anyway

Butterymuffin · 17/08/2018 18:16

I hadn't noticed this so it doesn't seem to me that it's been well enough publicised.

Given that they are generally amenable to moving threads out of Chat if they seem valuable (like the thread of reading suggestions for 17 year old boys), I don't see why the change. Not everything needs to be preserved, and surely it will have the servers straining at the seams.

PowerPlayed · 17/08/2018 18:19

I have no idea why you would want to keep data longer??

PanPanPanPing · 17/08/2018 18:58

"Meh, they all end up on the daily fail website these days anyway"

I think it's more likely that AIBU threads end up on other websites, icebearforpresident?!

I DON'T THINK IT MATTERS MUCH.

PanPanPanPing · 17/08/2018 19:08

Ok

NerrSnerr · 17/08/2018 19:17

Why does anyone care about mumsnet's servers or whether they choose to keep data longer? That's their problem.

TheCatFromOuterSpace · 17/08/2018 20:06

I mostly post in chat because I like the fact that everything disappears. I don't like the thought of my musings hanging around on the Internet for ever more. I think aibu should disappear too.

Guienne · 17/08/2018 22:58

Given that they are generally amenable to moving threads out of Chat if they seem valuable (like the thread of reading suggestions for 17 year old boys), I don't see why the change.

They've explained that moving the thread takes a fair amount of faffing their end.

PanPanPanPing · 18/08/2018 05:08

Bumping for the other side of the world and insomniacs!

OP posts:
SallyVating · 18/08/2018 06:06

Who gives a shiny shite. Like really?

ExBbqQueen · 18/08/2018 07:43

Well I post differently under Chat so I’ll just have to name change monthly as opposed to every so often that I do now.

More hassle having to think up of new names Hmm
