We are moving and I have been packing and putting stuff in the spare room, my son has closed the door and now I can't get it open, something is blocking the handle from the other side, I have tried taking the handle off with no luck. The window is open, but even if we had a ladder big enough we wouldn't be able to get through

Anyone got any suggestions please?

I don't think the handle is broken, I think some thing is trapping it, I am going to try banging the door a bit more see if I can dislodge whatever it is.

I will ring the landlady on Monday if I have no luck, I have just been looking and the window is wide open, so will see if anyone has a ladder big enough and I can collect

A photo will literally be of the door. I have looked at the other internal doors and both handles on either side have screwed in, which explains why when I took the handle off this side it had no effect

This happened to me twice in my old rent d flat!! Once the dog got stuck in the lounge and once me and the dog got stuck in the bedroom! I rang my landlord both times, he called a handyman who had a tool to open it and took off the handle. The mechanism in the handles broke so I would push the handle down but the bit in the middle Of the door didn't move.

Call your landlord or if not call a handyman and bill the landlord

And ring the landlady now don't wait until Monday. She should pay the bill so why wait especially if the window is open

Most door handles are 2 handles (one on either side) that are connected by way of a bar that runs through the latch that’s inset into the door if you unscrew the handle on your side you should be able to pull it back along with the centre bar far enough so that it’ll still work the latch but not the handle on the other side 👍

ReservoirDogs · 11/08/2018 16:40

Beaky Plinder - Why do you think the landlady should pay if it isn't opening because something belonging to a tenant is preventing it from opening? Just wondered.

YeTalkShiteHen · 11/08/2018 16:42

I had this in my old house but DS2 was stuck inside and I tried to kick it in but couldn’t. Thankfully 6 foot 5 burly neighbour's son did it but the door wasn’t salvageable unfortunately.

Obviously yours isn’t an immediate emergency because nobody is stuck, but I fear it might be the only way to get in.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 11/08/2018 16:43

What sort of handle is it, is it a handle shaped one, could the pictures be on top of something so trapped by the handle

sobeyondthehills · 11/08/2018 16:45

@Canyerjustfixthis yep that worked perfectly thank you, hadn't thought about pulling it out slightly.

I am usually intelligent I promise. Turns out it was the Paw Patroller blocking the handle from moving down, this has been moved to a more sensible place.

Thank you for all your suggestions

Good news! Sodding Paw Patroller! I don’t miss ours at all, it’s now taking up an unreasonable amount of space in my friend’s house as her son loves it!!

Canyerjustfixthis · 11/08/2018 16:47

Brill! Glad your sorted - all the best for the move

sobeyondthehills · 11/08/2018 16:51

Thank you, off to pack more stuff.

I suggested the landlady pay if it's a fault with the door handle breaking down like I experienced reservoir dogs, I posted at the same time as her update saying something was trapped.

Glad your sorted OP.
