Extremely rude neighbour! Final straw?

Hi all,
(This is my first time posting so please be nice:)
We’ve lived in our tiny village for 20 years mostly full of rich retirees whose children are in the latter stages of private school. I’m not private school educated and we have northern roots so we don’t get many friendly faces. However, there are some lovely younger families moving into the area so we do have a few allies. Nevertheless, there have been serveral instances of out right rudeness from neighbours where the council had been involved (e.g perimeter hedge being half a meter too tall). People telling us we’re “the odd family at the top of the hill” and lots of people ignoring us at church etc etc etc. The final straw for me if that we had a note through the letter box in late December saying “you owe £8 for the village magazine pay it NOW...” no niceties or friendliness from a woman with no legitimate reason to dislike us or speak to me in this way. Anyway as you ladies know, December is a busy time and I forgot to pay up anyway 3 days ago I get another note saying “NO MONEY NO MAG” - what should I do? I’m tempted to pay in 2p’s and 1p’s...? What would you do? Bearing in mind I’ve NEVER given this woman (Jane) any reason to speak to me like this. She could just have popped round and I would have paid up but this feels aggressive?
Thanks ladies :)

Honestly, I would pay the money and apologise for her having to chase me for it.
Pick your battles

ScreamingValenta · 20/01/2018 21:00

Do you actually want the magazine? I'd be tempted to tell the rude woman I'm no longer interested in it.

Mookatron · 20/01/2018 21:02

I'd pay it and put a haughty message in with it. And cancel the mag because it's crap (I'd say).

I'd just say I'm cancelling because its a pile of fucking shit.

MrsAndyDayTheFirst · 20/01/2018 21:04

Just pay the money you owe and cancel the subscription surely?

HouseOfGoldandBones · 20/01/2018 21:08

I'd pay the money, then write a letter to the magazine to be published in their letters page (assuming they have one) asking about why some villages & villagers are insular, rude & unwelcoming.

FarmerSee · 20/01/2018 21:09

Pay the money you owe. And then cancel the mag.

Tell Jane she can shove her stuffy boring mag where the sun don't shine. Tell her you forgot about the money because you didn't realise you'd had a mag. You thought it was just junk mail and binned the bloody thing when it cluttered up your doormat! You're far too busy with your 'weird' and wonderful life to bother with reading that crap.

Poshindevon · 21/01/2018 05:09

Jane had no need to be so rude but you do owe the money which is now well overdue. By not paying you have made things worse. Pay up and cancel the magazine if not pay on time in future.

Longdistance · 21/01/2018 05:19

I’m more concerned about those going to church ignoring you. How very unchristian.

GingerTheGiantSlayer · 21/01/2018 13:36

Update!

Jane is the rudest woman at church, delivered the money in 1p's and 2p's. Although I had the money as a five pound notes and three £1 just in case she had a change in attitude. She wasn't very happy. Never mind eh? So fed up of nasty people in this village at thinking you ladies are in to something with the write and article in the mag and stick it to her. I'm not normally this petty but it's not a small case of pick your battles this is a larger and ongoing issue.

Is the magazine available on the internet ? It would be free to read or a Facebook group

GingerTheGiantSlayer · 21/01/2018 22:32

Unfortunately no, the mag is not available online.

£8 for a village magazine? Wtf?

GingerTheGiantSlayer · 21/01/2018 23:52

Ridiculous I know! And the money wasn't for unpaid fees (I checked) it's for January's issue! Sorry. For the confusion ladies :)

RowenasDiadem · 21/01/2018 23:57

January's???? Definitely calls for a reader's letter expressing your disgust at the sheer rudeness of some members of the village, particularly their inability to invoice in a polite and courteous manner. The readers after all are the ones keeping the rag in production.

RavenclawRealist · 22/01/2018 00:01

Why do you want this magazine? £8 is extortion nothing happens near me I would pay that much to read about!

Thinkingofausername1 · 01/02/2018 17:24

Tell her you find the big issue, more interesting and a more worthy cause.

retirednow · 01/02/2018 17:37

drop a note in saying you don't want the magazine any more, how does it cost £8, ours is free every week and theres nothing in it worth reading.
