AIBU to ask WWYD?

The lottery on Friday is making 100 people in the UK instant millionaires, so with that in mind I want to ask everyone - what would you do with £1,000,000?

I don't just want vague notions though - actually calculate the numbers!

Invest in property - £500,000
Buy house - £200,000
Do up house and furnish it - £100,000
Go on holiday - £15,000
High-interest savings account for DS- £50,000
High-interest savings account for us - £130,000
Anonymous splurges - £5000

Perfect balance of fun and sense I think! So WWYD with £1million?

I would spend the entire lot getting Jacobs to restart production of Sweet Chilli Thai Bites. I hate them, they have ruined my liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiife by stopping them and I am considering telling them so.

flossyfloo · 25/07/2012 12:33

Pay someone to do everything that needed doing in the house to be able to sell it £5k
Pay off mortgage £300k - then sell house for less :( - damn negative equity
Money to 3 DC £150k
Money to DB £50k
Money to SIL £50k (reluctantly! would prefer to give about £20k but would have to treat her the same as my DB!)
Money to PIL's £30k (not sure I would but reckon DH would insist!)
Move to Oz £50k
Travel extensively on the way to Oz £50k, maybe more depending on how long we would travel for?
Cancer Research £50k donation
New wardrobe etc £10k
Tattoos for DH £5k
Savings £50k
Splurge money £20k
Rest of the £1m and money from sale of house would go towards new house in Oz.

Markingmyplace · 25/07/2012 12:53

100,000 £5k holidays for next 20 years
550,000 School fees
100,000 New cars
250,000 Holiday home in Florida
And it would mean I could give up work, and be a kept woman by my dh!!!

laracroft2001 · 25/07/2012 13:49

Lol at AKMD

I would perhaps spend some of my lot on getting secret bars reinstated!!

TheMonster · 25/07/2012 13:52

£500k house
£200k house for mum and dad
Ds into private school £15k a year
£20k car for me, £20k car for DP, £20k car for dad

ColumboIsMyHero · 25/07/2012 14:04

£180K pay off mortgages and any debts
£20K extension
£200K set aside for DS and DD's uni fees
£100K each to DB and DBIL
£380K invested to give an income (probably property) so I could give up my current job. I reckon I could get a couple of 3 bed places round here that would net £1700 pcm rent
£20K for some holidays, doing up our old Beetle, buying a knackered campervan and somewhere to keep them...

3teenhell · 25/07/2012 14:36

ohh have got my tickets so this is what i plan

450k on three flats to rent out, but to be passed to DC's when older
300k house for now and decoration
PIL, DF and DS 50 K each
100k in bank high intrest savings

ginmakesitallok · 25/07/2012 14:44

150k pay off mortgage and debts
15k new car for DP
150k DB and DSIL
250k "away" somewhere where we can't touch it for years
10k - holiday
50k - new kitchen/bathroon/conservatory
275 left? Dont know what I'd do - just waste it!

RubyFakeNails · 25/07/2012 14:48

As much as it costs for me to be nipped, sucked, tucked and lasered into perfection. Say £100k

£450k-Halve whats left. Dh and I get 1 half, spend it on holidays, treats things we enjoy over years to come.

£450k- Other half divided between DCs to clear student loans, fund travelling and 'give them opportunities'.

DH and I would still have to work so really just use it to mean our leisure time is the best it can be.

Would like to have said use it all to open a dogs and cats home but I don't think it would be enough to sustain it for years.

curiousgeorgie · 25/07/2012 14:51

Stealth penguin - you could buy a house for 200k ?

I would need at least 600 for the house, 100 in savings and 100 each to my parents, brother and best friend.

BenedictsCumberbitch · 25/07/2012 14:53

250k for a nice 4-5 bed house in my wee village (in the north east, cheap as chips)
Pay off the mortgage on the house we rent out 80k
Do that house up 20k
Pay off debts 20k
50k to each bro, sis and parents 300k
10k to local autism charity
Awesome holiday 10k
Range rover sport and fun sporty car type thing 150k
Invest the rest.

Then have another baybee!

hazchem · 25/07/2012 14:55

Well we are about to relocate to Australia so the first thing I would do is buy DP, DS and I tickets for Singapore air sky suites so £10k
With a kick arse holiday on the way £10K
Buy property to live in Australia £350K
Split £100k between our families
Car £30k
Trust fund type thing for DS £50k
Money so DH can train and quantify in his trade in Oz and set up company if he wishes £100k
Clothes clothes clothes (maybe a few bags) £5kish
slings and running prams £1k
Invest money so I can work in the type of theater I like £100k

I've got just under £250k left so would like to invest say half into a fund which would then income generate so could support charities
the other half into savings

right better get ticket!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 25/07/2012 14:58

If I were really doing it, I would but a nice two-up, two-down for 250k. I would put 500k in a savings account. I'd probably spend a grand on random indulgent stuff like clothes and so on. I'd probably spend about 5k on books. Blush

That's 756k. I'd have to give some to charity or I'd feel shit, and I think I would give 50 each to a feminist charity and a dyslexia one (not sure which ones or if I'd give bits to several). So that's 856k. With the last 144 I'd buy my dad a really nice car because he's never had one and he would like it, so maybe 44k (?! not sure). Then I'd give 50 each to my brothers.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/07/2012 14:59

Where I live a nice 3 bed detached with a garden is 600k so I'd buy that.

Then I'd buy a 3 bed flat in a town centre near me to set up a low cost counselling practise - there's a real lack of cheap/free counselling in this area - £300k

Leaves a 100k for holidays/savings/giant eternity ring.

Vagaceratops · 25/07/2012 15:01

£500k on a new house
£150k to the children (50k each)
£10k on a holiday
Save the rest.

whattodoo · 25/07/2012 15:10

Pay off mortgage - 140
Extend house - 50
New kitchen, bathroom etc - 20
Gifts to various relatives, godchildren etc -100
Charity - 100
Hire a 6 bed villa for a summer and invite friends / rellys to come & go as they please - 30
DD's education - 200
Invest - 350
Blow in cars, shoes, waxed and tat - 10

whattodoo · 25/07/2012 15:11

CaliforniaLeaving · 25/07/2012 15:13

Buy house for us
Buy house for each Ds.
Buy retirement bungalow for Mum
Buy a small place with disabled access for Sis
Pay off Ds 1 college loans
Pay for Ds 2 college (starts september)
Put money away for Dd college
Take a nice holiday, I'd like a nice tour of European cities.
Put a large amount in savings and investments
Make Dh retire.
Not sure I'd have enough money for all that Grin

KatMumsnet · 25/07/2012 15:16

Hi, we've moved this into 'What Would You Do?', thanks.

dillnameddog · 25/07/2012 15:19

Buy a big house - 600k
Give my sis/mum money - 75k
Put some in accounts for dc - 100k
Put some in account/pension for us - 200k
Have a lovely wedding - 20k
Splurge - 5k

It's actually not that much, I realise!!! But will be buying several lottery tickets like everyone else

HaitchJay · 25/07/2012 19:22

We have worked out that £1m would pay off mortgage and let dh & I retire and live on approx £30k a year until pensions.
