Passport countersignatory - WWYD?

Ok, I agreed to be a countersignatory for my NCT friend's baby's passport. Her DP (who i also know) had filled in the form, and I filled out the section on the form and stated that I had known her DP for 1 year. I signed the form and the baby's photo, and thought nothing more of it.

Fast forward to today, and I've received a letter from the passport office asking me to confirm that I have known the person named on the form for the period stated, and that when I signed the form had the person fully filled it in and signed it. They enclosed a copy of the form that I had signed. I'm sure this is a perfectly normal check.

However - I've looked at the photocopy of the form - and it isn't the form I signed! My friend has obviously rewritten the form as I didn't realise you had to have known the person for 2 years. So the form now reads that i have known her, not her DP, for 2 years, and she has forged my signature on the form and on the photo.

I'm not sure if I have a problem with this. I'm wondering whether the passport office are doing a normal check, or whether they can tell that the two signatures are similar?

Would you contact her and let her know that I've seen a copy of the form and know what she did?
Would you tell the passport office?
Would you just go along with it? I don't know what the penalty is for this. I will have to sign the reply letter (or rather get her to sign it so the signatures match!)

Please help!

Why don't you want to send any more information.

LIZS · 11/03/2014 18:53

f you agreed to be a counter signatory surely you knew they may follow it up Confused . What is the issue ?

NigellasDealer · 11/03/2014 18:58

georgia if you signed for someone's passport, you can expect to be contacted, what is the problem? had you known the person for over 2 years?

Presumably if you don't reply they might make a note against your passport number for future reference? Assume you were either careless or complicit. I'd reply in a hurry.

I gave my friend my passport number iam a company director yesterday I received a letter from the passport agency saying it appears I signed a passport application and to clarify I did and that I saw the form and signed it !!!! at risk of losing a 41 year friendship I said to my friend I cannot believe you signed the form and photos and sent it off she is begging me to say I did sign it but I think they have sent the letter not as normal practice to check a countersignature but because they must have checked my signature and its not the same iam so angry to be in this position but I cannot jeopodise myself !!!! should I ring them or just sign and say I know the child and gave my passport number but do not remember siging forms or pictures I just am not prepared to get into trouble even though saying I never signed or saw the form will get her into trouble I think this letter has been sent not randomly but because they know its not me im so upset . She said please just sign and say you did but I cannot risk
