Don't worry I'm not going to share my handle to try and get followers but I understand there are some strong views on this so thought I'd do a AMA.

I don't have a huge following, I have about 35k followers across Instagram and Tiktok.

I mainly share family travels and real life content. Very natural, no filters, honest wobbly real life.

what is it that you do that attracts people to engage? I ask as someone that follows 1 person.

As I said before, I just share what I want. I sometimes share more controversial things on Tiktok as everyone seems to have an opinion on there.

I’ve taken on the Instagram for my local cat rescue, it’s got 400 followers so far. Any tips?

Do you find that you get a lot of stuff for free? I'm on TikTok and have quite a decent following, and just recently I've been getting SO many offers for free stuff. I've been accepting (and then posting the promo vids of course) but I'm almost at the point where I'll have to be - shock horror - selective.

It's insane to me that people just send me things, some quite expensive!

Well done! Thats a great position to be in. I used to take everything free and now I rarely do gifted collaborations unless its an event.

Tiktok is different though because if you want to sell on tiktok shop, its all about volumes and the more videos you make, the more likely you are to make money from sales.

Is 35k followers enough to make any money?
I know someone who has 90k followers and she gets lots free stuff. It’s at the point now where she picks & chooses. She also charges a fee on top as otherwise the time it takes to make the videos, edit them etc just isnt worth it.
It takes up a huge chunk of her free time and if I’m honest I think her kids have really missed out as she’s constantly on her phone.

That sounds hard. I am conscious to not be on my phone too much in front of my son.

Yes I do feature my child and I have debated whether to do this many times. For now, we do share his face but if he ever said no then we'd stop. He's aged 4.

I doubt I have a page on Tattle. I'm really not that interesting so it still blows my mind we people follow our adventures.

Ok, I'm going to ask the obvious question.

You do actually realise he can't give informed consent, don't you?

I mean given that he doesn't have a clue what the internet actually is and any risks involved, or problems you may have caused him later in life?

Why don't you create your own content and leave him out of it?

TheFairyCaravan · 30/10/2025 18:09

You’re exploiting your child for clicks, views and money. They absolutely can’t consent to what you’re doing and the internet is forever. Their face has probably already been put on top of some AI created image and put on a dodgy site somewhere, for absolute weirdos. Nothing could have made me do that to my children or grandson.

Dinoswearunderpants · 30/10/2025 18:11

traintonowheretoday · 30/10/2025 18:05

A 4 year old is hardly able to consent are they….they don’t know why they are saying yes to

so let’s be first here you are exploiting your child for £ / attention

Thats your opinion. My content isn’t solely my son.

This consent era is so woke. Do you ask your child consent to help them on the toilet, to ask them to do chores etc. Consent is very misused these days.

Just keep posting and engaging with others. Follow accounts but add them to your favourites then check in a few days to see if they follow you back, if not then irs easier to unfollow those who don't follow back.

Come on, someone who uses their kid for views and money was never going to have a sensible answer 😂

LivingOnTheVeg · 30/10/2025 18:19

It’s absolutely not true that paedos are only interested in AI. Why would you risk it when there’s zero benefit for your DC? Why do you think there’s a reason for him to be online/what did you think the positives were if you “debated” whether to do it or not?

traintonowheretoday · 30/10/2025 18:22

what about consent is “misused” in your opinion?

CrimsonStoat · 30/10/2025 18:22

Dinoswearunderpants · 30/10/2025 17:59

I'll try and reply all at once.

  1. I don't do it for the money, anything I make goes in the holiday fund or to my son. It's a hobby but brands will provide the product and sometimes a payment to share a post. They usually pay anything between £50-500. Some people make a lot more though. Also you can sell on tiktok shop. I made a few thousand on that but its over populated now.
  1. I started it to try and make some mummy friends when I was pregnant. One of my closest friends I met on instagram.
  1. I share things to try and help others. It's never 'look at me' more this product is really helpful or here's tips when travelling with a toddler. I get to travel often and I know not many do so I do sometimes worry about that perception however I work hard for my salary and allowed to spend it however we like.
  1. I used to be obsessed with views/engagement. I was part of all these fake groups for likes/comments and hated the pressure off it. It was never genuine so now I just post what I like. It's upsetting when you spend good time creating something to only get a few hundred views but that's how it goes.
  1. I'd hate to delete the videos as that's also our memories. I'd ask to make it private or I'd download all the videos. No issue with revenue as its all just extra pocket money.
  1. Yes views are often shocking on Ads but I always declare. I hate seeing other creators share things that are clearly an ad but they don't declare it. I think its really unfair to do that.
  1. I was waiting for the pedo question. AI is do advanced these days, they don't need pictures of children online. A close friend works very high up in the Met in this area and he said they rarely find real photos of children unless its a family member. It's all AI.

But how much money do you make?

It's no use saying AMA if you're going to sidestep questions.

What's your annual income from doing this?

Rituelec · 30/10/2025 18:24

Does it not just suck the joy out of life?

Uuuui · 30/10/2025 18:24

EmpressaurusKitty · 30/10/2025 18:13

Thanks OP.

I would really disagree with the follow unfollow method it’s dated and, it tends to be crappy for interactions and growth.

its a local cat one, keep it simple, nice clear pics of the cats and cute videos. Interact with local businesses etc as you’re going to want local followers and interactions, it’s not going to get you five million followers but it will be much more meaningful followers as they are more likely to be on your local area. If you’re wanting to really push for a large amount, Check out other rescue instagrams for ideas and basically adapt similar trends, songs etc.

Rituelec · 30/10/2025 18:25

And do you show your kids?

TheLivelyRose · 30/10/2025 18:27

Content creator is just a non word for posting on social media. Children arent content and shouldn't be used to make money or attract followers. They dont understand the ramifications of it or that it's forever. Even a temporary story can be screen shot.

No one is that interested in the good and bad of an ordinary life.

Ketzele · 30/10/2025 18:36

This is a very salty thread! OP, can you give me a ballpark figure on how many followers you need to start making money? And is all the money through ads/collaborations or tiktok shop? (Just being nosey, I'll not be doing it myself.)

PinkPonyClubDancer · 30/10/2025 18:40

how can you even compare helping your child use the loo to selling their privacy online?! Ridiculous. Can’t stand these so called “influencers”, using their kids for clicks. Why does anyone else need to see you brag about your holiday? It’s bizarre you think anyone else even cares.

Right?! 🙄

So OP earlier accepts her son may not want to be filmed and content about him out on the internet forever, but says she’ll ask if he ever asks her not to do it? 🤦🏻‍♀️ I mean little kids just love and want to please their parents so even if she asked him now held likely say yes. It isn’t being woke lol to not out your young child on public show. It’s a lot to protecting them and their identity until such time they’re of age and actively want to do this. Amazed that as a parent OP hasn’t come to this conclusion but quite the opposite.

That said, this is probably the most pointless AMA I’ve read since so many Qs and comebacks just ignored.

I agree with the rest of your post but it's just obviously inaccurate to say "it's bizarre you think anyone else even cares." Clearly 35 thousand people DO care or they wouldn't follow her!

Why they care, I couldn't tell you but content creation wouldn't be billion pound business, and millions of people wouldn't make a living from it, if others (and lots of others) didn't watch their videos.

I find it very weird when people deny the material reality of something just because they personally don't agree with it. I couldn't care less about football but objectively it would be ridiculous to say "It's bizarre for Man U to think anyone even cares about how many times a random man kicked a ball into a net today."

There are loads of benefits for my child. Hotel stays, toys, clothes etc.
