I’m having treatment for hair loss AMA

I’ve always had quite thin fine hair but since hitting 45 my hair has become terribly thin, a few months ago a large chunk of hair broke off at the back of my head and because the hair was so thin I was left with a bald area around the size of a 50p that couldn’t be covered. After crying about it for a couple of weeks I made an appointment to see a trichologist and was diagnosed with female pattern hair loss. I’ve been having some treatments and managed to really improve the condition and thickness of my hair. I really thought I would have no options but a hair transplant so have started this thread for other people who might be in the same position and need a bit of hope. Feel free to AMA

Hello All,

does anyone know of a qualified Trichologist? How much do they charge & how long before results are evident. I live in Amersham so reasonably local would be great.

thanks in advance….

Has anyone used hair extensions to cover hair thinning & loss? Do they exasperate the problems or will natural hair grow whilst they are in?

thanks to all.

@Audubon

Would you be able to give an update on how things are now for you?

I’m looking into the DermaPen for micro needling for my hair as I have bad hair loss just above the temples. Overall my hair got really thin.

id love the name of where you went for treatment and if you’d still recommend it.

Also were you taking oral minoxidil and topical too? I could do topical but I’m worried about side effects of oral.

Thanks so much for any new information. And hope your hair is all grown back now 🤞

@TrainGamehi, I’m actually really happy with hair now, it’s never going to be thick and lush but it’s so much better than it was, and I’m not paranoid now about people seeing how thin it had got. I use 1% topical minoxidil, and had the micro needling with calecim, I did 2 courses of 6 weekly treatments with that and it was admittedly very expensive. Other things that have made a difference are I had blood tests and was borderline deficient in iron, vitamin B and D3 I take supplements for all of this now and I think it’s improved the breakage. I also virtually never wear my hair up now and I was wearing it tied back every day which made the situation much worse. I used Midlands Tricholgy in Burton on Trent and would highly recommend. I’ll post some photos

These are from the end of last year and I’d say it’s improved again since these were taken.

@Audubon thanks so much for the update. So now you take extra vitamins and minoxidil 1%? But no further treatments?

It sounds like the micro needling plus serum kick started things and it’s now better with the other supports you mention.

1% minoxidil is quite mild as there are stronger versions like 5%. Is there any reason to be at this lower level?

im considering the micro needling to kickstart the hair follicles as my temples feel like a bald man right now. I have a tiny whisp of hair on one side of my parting that’s so thin at the front and it’s really horrible to see such a thin veil of hair cover most of the front of my head. Awful to lose so much hair. Such a confidence knock. I’m 50 and I think it’s female pattern baldness and loss of hormones. I’ve got vaginal atrophy at the same time and yet still my periods keep coming!!! How can this be possible if I’ve got no estrogen?!

Thanks also for your photos. I can see some really good improvement and I’d be happy with the filling in you’ve had. So glad it has worked out for you 🙏👍 gives me hope 🤞

@TrainGamesorry 1% was a typo, it is indeed 5% I use. I do have a top up micro needling treatment about every 3 months. I forgot to mention I also take marine collagen now also on the advice of the trichologist, I use the Kollo brand. It’s hard to say what’s helping and I think it’s probably a combo of all things, but the micro needling definitely Italy kickstarted things as I saw new growth within 4 weeks of the first treatment, which was much too early for the other things to have taken effect. Bless you, it sounds like you’re having a crap time with it all, I do hope it all works well for you. Come back and let me know x

Do you put minoxidil all over your scalp, or just on the areas you can see thinning?
