Well, almost anything... I am not unwilling to do a few readings, but might not have the time to do lots. I'm interested in other kinds of discussion around Tarot.

How long does it take to learn how to read the tarot please?

There are 78 cards to learn the meaning of, then spreads and then practice, but there's always more to think about or learn. I think little and often is best. You're probably talking a few months only.

Isn’t this really obvious... Yes, I'm sure you could argue that.

I’ve asked about a safe new home will it happen locally?

potkettleblock · 07/09/2022 23:00

Really interesting thread OP!

I’ve often thought about learning more about tarot. Is there anything in particular I should look for when buying cards or will any old deck do to begin with?

Booklover3 · 07/09/2022 23:32

Thank you @greenleafyleaves

Ive got the Light Seers Tarot. Mainly because I liked the pictures! Lol

EmmaH2022 · 08/09/2022 13:03

OP I have seen a job ad for a Tarot reader for a company who do them by phone

I am curious to know how this works for the reader. I can imagine if someone does this a sideline, they won't want to use their normal references?

yes, I am partly asking for me - I read tarot a little for myself but only have a deck with cats on! 😂 I can't imagine approaching my normal referees and asking them to vouch for me for something like this!

justwonderingagain · 08/09/2022 13:07

Can you tell me if I will make any new friends? What does my future look like xx

ginghamstarfish · 08/09/2022 14:30

Sorry OP but the reading you did for an earlier poster was so general, seems like it could be said to anyone asking that same question. Would be interested to know if there have been any studies on the accuracy of tarot and other similar things.

I would have a really good look at as many images as possible. It's easy to think you'll like a deck based on the name only to find the artwork is a bit disappointing. To learn, I think it's easiest to use a more traditional deck.

Doesn't sound like something I'd want to get involved in. I doubt they'll want references to be honest.

No, I am not aware of any evidence beyond the quality of the relationship (so similar to the evidence for counselling really). There's certainly no evidence of psychics, spirits, demons, gods, angels etc.

Yes, it was vague. When I did the reading we didn't know whether the poster had just started a new career or got a promotion or was about to retire and that was on her mind. I just got lucky that it was a period of job change for her, I guess.

@CambsAlways I could see that coming - I'll do a freebie for you !

CambsAlways · 08/09/2022 16:25

Very nice vera99

SwanSwimming22 · 08/09/2022 16:58

@vera99 on the wild off chance you fancied doing another...

my questions are

is he actually interested in me? Could we be just friends?
should I move home?

hope you have time for these, thanks!

vera99 · 08/09/2022 17:12

As the OP has kindly taken the time to start and answer questions on this thread I feel it would be unkind to be too jokey with a response. That said my late mum went to a clairvoyant at the end of Eastbourne Pier and I paid for her as she was curious. The gipsy lady surmised;

  1. That she was staying in a big white house surrounded by green (she was my studio flat)
  2. She saw an old lady and the Hallelujah chorus from Messiah (it was my mum's favourite)
  3. She had trouble finding shoes that would fit - and the solution was to go to a bespoke shoemaker in the town. (that was true)|
Those were the 3 hits that surprised her - lots of misses of course and suggestions that went nowhere.
vera99 · 08/09/2022 17:19

@SwanSwimming22 I'm consulting the husband of a clairvoyant (amateur who is really into it and has been to the - really to see what he comes up with.)

She has been on courses here - the OP may know of it.

vera99 thank you

CambsAlways · 08/09/2022 18:14

I remember as a young child laying on the beach in Yarmouth a gypsy came by bend down and tapped my dad on shoulder, I’ve got some good news for you kind sir, you are going to live until you are 96, he was around 50 at the time, you will come into some money etc etc waffling on and on, she then said would you like to buy some lucky heather from an old gypsy lady , he replied well with all that good luck I don’t think I need any love do you 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 he died at 90

Rabidturnip · 08/09/2022 18:16

Am I going to get married?

vera99 · 08/09/2022 18:32

Perfect is the enemy of good and good is good enough. Love can grow if the seeds are good and the soil is fertile. But don't forget to keep it watered or it may dry out and wither and die. There will be growth in the spring but now maybe is the winter of your discontent.

I actually wish readers would tell customers if they see something like that. I've had a few tarot readings and I have told them at the outset that I'd like to hear anything, good or bad, but I can understand why they won't want to expand on stuff they see as bad.

part of the complication is the reader and the customer might not see the same things as bad things.

I started reading in sixth form, and almost all the readings were the same - because we were all at a similar life stage. But two people I had totally different readings for, one seemed to refer to a family issue that I was aware of, so I put it down to my prior knowledge, but the other (using Celtic cross which has past in it) was about an issue in someone's past. There was no way that it would be something that the person would want voiced, so I focused on the future and potential cards. But it was an early wake up call to me about the responsibility that comes with reading tarot. Even if (like me 😂) you're not sure you believe in it, you have a responsibility for what comes out of your mouth and how that might affect people. Particularly in a situation where there's this potential mystic element that they may or may not take more seriously than you do.

Just to put some context around why readers may not always tell you everything they read.

EmmaH2022 · 08/09/2022 19:35

Peg I'm big on personal responsibility, an adult asking for a reading isn't something that concerns me too much. No one has ever told me anything "bad" though and I think that's a given among readers.

I have seen a healer a couple of times and she doesn't deal in false hope. It can be hard, but that's a good thing overall.

I drew a card as a 'guide" after seeing this thread and got the devil! Go figure. You have to laugh.

vera99 · 08/09/2022 19:41

It's interesting that most religious leaders are men and most clairvoyants are women - maybe in the past being excluded from mainstream religions women developed their own channels to 'god' and were burnt and persecuted for their blasphemy against the patriarchy.

Blackbirdblue30 · 09/09/2022 14:17

I learned Tarot over one of the lockdowns. I bought a set that really resonated with me. I also found a spreadsheet that calculates the probability of seeing the number of particular cards in a spread. When I was asking a very specific question, I got a statistically improbable (0.03%) answer twice in a row. I was asking about getting back after a breakup and it was the strongest 'yes' I've seen in two years of practising. However, time has gone on now I have decided to never ever see that person again. How would you interpret that?
