Well, almost anything... I am not unwilling to do a few readings, but might not have the time to do lots. I'm interested in other kinds of discussion around Tarot.

Do you know that God hates all forms of divination and that tarot opens you up to all manner of spiritual evils? As someone who used to read tarot, I'm not judging you. It's demonic.

Why is it demonic ? Genuine question

Seriously. Does a klaxon warning go out or something. "Quick come to Mumsnet. They are dabbling with dark forces." Ffs.

😂

Could we just keep this thread nice and chilled without all the hellfire and damnation claptrap. It's a really interesting topic and thank you @greenleafyleaves for starting this.

The title of this board is 'Ask Me Ànything', not 'Ask Me Anything That MerlinsButler Approves of'. I just asked if OP knew if God hates divination. I've as much right to ask any question of my choosing as as anyone, and you don't get to dictate the mood and direction of the thread any more than I do. I have a history in this field and was actually curious due to my own previous experiences of reading tarot in the past.

Anyway, I've asked my question, didn't get a response (that I've seen anyway) and will leave it at that.

I do not believe in any gods or demons or "spiritual evils". I am aware that some people find Tarot threatening or upsetting though. I empathise because that's probably how I view religion.

@Idontknowwhatto in your opinion "God hates forms of divination" unless you have him on speed dial I don't think you can speak for a deity! If you have no interest in Tarot why not just scroll past instead of forcing religion into it.

CockingASnook · 07/09/2022 12:02

Great answer! And thanks for the straight answer to my question.

greenleafyleaves · 07/09/2022 12:03

Have you ever been unable to read for someone? Do some people have such clouded futures that it makes no sense or is everything laid out for everyone?

There are two scenarios where I find reading difficult.
Rarely, and it's only happened online, I cannot read for someone. I just 'lose it' and cannot "see it". I'm sorry that's a bit vague, it's the only way I can explain it. I'm not sure what It is.
With others the It is very obvious. I can see It over there right shoulder. (And remember, I am completely sceptical that there is anything to see).

Secondly, this happens a fair bit. The person sits down. I ask what they want to know and they reply, "I don't know really, anything really". And I know immediately that they do have a question. They're just not asking it. In the final minutes of a reading, they will suddenly blurt out the real question. And I think "I knew it!!".

I'm unemployed and struggling to find work. Have applied for so much but considering a career change. I live in a part of the UK that is shite for jobs.

I feel little self worth and lost my confidence.

Can you tell me if things will improve? :)

BeyondPurpleTulips · 07/09/2022 12:06

Divination in general has always been explained to me as something that works better if you do it yourself, rather than someone doing it for you.

So on that note, could you do a quick (three card maybe so not too basic) read for me, and I could do one for myself and compare? See not only how similar they are to one another, but how accurate either/both are to my life?

Ayalight · 07/09/2022 12:08

Idontknowwhatto · 07/09/2022 11:25

Same here. I remember someone warning me in the past and I thought they were just a low-vibrational, fear-based person who just wasn't as spiritually enlightened as me. Turns out they were right.

Genuinely interested on how it brings in the devil. I've heard a lot about this. What were your experiences?

MerlinsButler · 07/09/2022 12:09

greenleafyleaves · 07/09/2022 11:51

Is it true you are not supposed to buy your own Tarot cards but have them given to you as a gift?

Yes, that's a commonly held belief. I don't have any truck with it though.

Ha ha. I like your attitude. Maybe I will treat myself to the deck I like after all.

Why is it demonic ? Genuine question

Spirit guides are a deception. Whatever forces are at play in giving the reader intuitive information are not from good, loving sources, as much as they pretend to be. I was very sceptical of this until I went into a serious spiral of depression, obsessive thoughts and other incredibly negative experiences while engaging in divination practices. Horrendous nightmares. 'Something' started taunting my parents in their home around this time. I was also using Doreen Virtue's angel cards to communicate with 'angels' and read all of her stuff to do with contacting guides etc.

I started realising the cards were the problem and threw them away. Then I started reading the Bible and realised I had been playing with fire. Around this time, Doreen Virtue wrote on her social media that she had been deceived and she too realised that all of her material had been demonically inspired, but she thought at the time that it had all been angelic, and from 'love and light'. She renounced everything, got sacked by her publisher, went bankrupt as she got dropped by everyone as she stopped touring and writing books about how to communicate with the spirit realm. That was confirmation from me.

I became a Christian, just like Doreen at around the same time and wouldn't touch tarot now. I get the appeal of using it but I think it's dangerous. You wouldn't let any human that you don't know into your house, so I find it disconcerting when people have an open door policy to the spiritual world. Often they thibk that if they have good intentions, or surround themselves with a loving white light, then they are protected, but they arent.

It says in scripture that the devil himself masquerades as an angel of light, and that is my experience. I know this view is offensive and/or hilarious hilarious many. I was that person once.

Anyway, I won't derail the thread anymore. Was just answering your question.

Bowing out now.

greenleafyleaves · 07/09/2022 12:13

What's the best way to start reading? I have a Rider Waite deck and various other oracle cards but just don't have the confidence to work with them more in case it's all wrong.

I am not sure if there is a best way. I suspect it's in a Tarot Circle that I run in a lovely peaceful space with good catering and a lovely group of people with high quality activities and beautiful materials that exists only in my imagination Wink

I would start with the Major Arcana and follow the Fool's Journey. Do two or three cards at a time. So, take a card. Read from a few sources (books or free online) and pick out what that card is generally taken to mean.
Then think about how it resonates with your life and your experiences. When have you experienced something similar. How did you feel? What did you learn?

I keep a journal for all of this, with lots of doodles and images stuck in etc.

Then tomorrow learn a couple more and practise the ones you already know too.

Once you have a few cards, notice how they relate. For example, the relationship between The Magician and The High Priestess and then the relationship between The High Priestess and The Empress and then The Empress and The Emperor...

(Also, what do you mean by "in case it's all wrong"?).

That's. really interesting answer @greenleafyleaves and I have to admit, I have fallen into being scenario 2 in the past but even when I've been explicit in my outcomes, I get told things like 'just keep doing what you're doing' which doesn't really tell me anythng as I'm not sure what I'm doing, if that makes sense?!

One of the last readers I went to (the one who had to put down extra cards for me), was so explicit with my friend and even the person who picked her up after the reading. She (reader) correctly predicted he'd (person picking up my friend) been in a car accident, and she couldn't have possibly known, he was in a different car and didn't even speak to her other than hello.

I just wonder why that sort of thing never happens to me.

greenleafyleaves · 07/09/2022 12:14

I've always been interested in tarot and would love to learn more about it. Where did you start when you first became interested?

@Monkerina see above. I think I started with a book from the library (this was the 90s and I was a poor student!) and a couple of websites. So much more out there nowadays for free of course.

I asked my cards if I had made the right decision yesterday. It’s a big life decision. I drew the High Priestess. Would you say that’s a yes? I think it’s a yes.

I would interpret that saying yes, you can trust yourself and your decision.

Nice to talk to someone else! I agree. I haven't really found a community. I find people online are generally a bit dogmatic about it or a bit too woo for me.

"When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you." Leviticus 20:6

This is why I believe God hates it. I didn't scroll past because I think it's dangerous.

@greenleafyleaves thanks for your answer. I'll leave your thread now (I mean it this time!). All the best.

Hi
I know you are getting lots of requests but I would be extremely grateful if you have time to do me a reading.
If so anything relating to my children would be good and abything else you see would be very interesting at this point in my life
Thank you x

54isanopendoor · 07/09/2022 12:19

@greenleafyleaves
I really like your thoughts on Tarot in general (giving people 'space' / provoking thoughtful discussion rather than 'fortune telling / divination' type powers)
It is a really interesting thread to start thank you as it is not just a 'read my cards requests' kind of thread but very much a 'let's talk about Tarot in general' one too

If you are willing to look at some cards for me, however, I am at a turning point in my life after two major losses this year (inc my very long term ex- partner) & a messy divorce too. Kids are teens (SN) & starting to head out into the world (I'm worried about them but also wonder if I will ever 'have a life' / be on my own).
If you had time / energy could you see anything for me please?

(I'd love to learn to read the cards for myself but the house I live in is a bit - a LOT 'unsettled' & although I don't think the Tarot 'lets in evil' or I'd not be asking, I am too much of a wuss to open up the deck I was given a couple of years ago to try)

greenleafyleaves · 07/09/2022 12:21

@Lottielou345 and @Idontknowwhatto I hope you're both in a happier place nowadays (and it sounds as though you are). It's horrible to live with fear and uncertainty.

greenleafyleaves · 07/09/2022 12:26

Are there some people who are just incredibly difficult to read?

Yes, one or two. I think the more you put in, the more you get out of it. But I also respect people who don't want to give anything away (not saying this is you). If they want to pay me and test me, that's fine. I'm good at what I do. I just think it's a bit of a waste of money if you're going to sit there stony-faced.

Most people who are difficult to read for are generally fighting back the tears and just trying to keep themselves safe. You can see it in their jaw and how they are swallowing. They're only half ready to let their emotions out. My heart goes out to them. Don't we all just want to be heard?

Not sure if you're psychic as well but it's the same with psychics, my spirits never want to talk to me, and I get told things like 'they come to me in nature', but I clearly need something more obvious!!!

I personally don't believe in psychics or the clairvoyance. I'm a pretty bad woo person all round really.

I love this thread, because I read tarot too, although I’ve never charged for it. I can’t bring myself to.

But your attitude to it is exactly mine. The cards are a tool for reflection and self-examination, then occasionally something inexplicable comes up. I love it.

My questions - do you find reading the cards for people tiring? I’m always knackered afterwards.

And, how do you deal with people being rude when they find out you read? I’ve had some really snotty comments, that I suspect are based on fear and misunderstanding. Sometimes it’s hard to know what to say when someone laughs in your face, though.
