Well, almost anything... I am not unwilling to do a few readings, but might not have the time to do lots. I'm interested in other kinds of discussion around Tarot.

What an interesting thread. I have never been drawn towards tarot because I’m frightened of the illustrations.
I wish there was a happier version if you see what I mean.

I have close relatives who many years ago visited a clairvoyant, lightheartedly and as part of a summer day out. Some of what they were told was a warning which turned out to be horribly correct, some of it was very frightening indeed and came true in every detail.

So I have very mixed feelings, quite interested and curious but too wary to directly participate.

RosieRoww · 07/09/2022 11:10

Can you read if I'll be moving back to my country please? 🌻🌻

greenleafyleaves · 07/09/2022 11:10

How long did it take you to learn? I signed up for a home study course but haven't started yet. Would love to be able to do this.

I learnt back in the 90s in my teens so I can't remember exactly how long it took, probably about half a year. I picked it up much quicker a while ago.
Some cards are easier to learn than others. I think when we have a block with a certain card then that means something. Why do I always forget the meaning of this card? How might I be trying to protect myself? How might I keep myself safe whilst accepting the meaning of this card at the same time? Etc.

Also do you read for yourself? Do you find it helpful if you do?

Yes, as above, I think that this is a very helpful way of using the cards. It brings me reassurance and guidance.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 07/09/2022 11:11

What's the best way to start reading? I have a Rider Waite deck and various other oracle cards but just don't have the confidence to work with them more in case it's all wrong.

weebarra · 07/09/2022 11:13

What's going to happen with my work?

Monkerina · 07/09/2022 11:13

I've always been interested in tarot and would love to learn more about it. Where did you start when you first became interested?

If you have time/opportunity to look at the cards for me, I'd love a reading- I'm at a big transition point in my life right now and would appreciate any guidance/reassurance/insight!

Booklover3 · 07/09/2022 11:14

I asked my cards if I had made the right decision yesterday. It’s a big life decision. I drew the High Priestess. Would you say that’s a yes? I think it’s a yes.

Nice to talk to someone else!

Hi iam new to this forum , I’ve been reading some of the comments regarding tarot cards . WARNING !!!! Do not dabble , I’ve been there and opened a door to evil . Yes it predicts but also let’s the devil in. I had to have my cards burnt in 2000.at first it’s a buzz finding out about all sorts but before you know it you are hooked . Iam now a Christian . This is an abomination using magic . It is the best way to go to hell . I brought in alsorts of spirits that were very difficult to shift . All you out there please I beg you do not go there if you want to go to heaven . Iam just concerned as I know the power of these things . The readings are precise and that’s why you want more and more from it . Trust me it’s not the answer . Only god knows these things . Don t be fooled

Do you know that God hates all forms of divination and that tarot opens you up to all manner of spiritual evils? As someone who used to read tarot, I'm not judging you. It's demonic.

Seriously. Does a klaxon warning go out or something. "Quick come to Mumsnet. They are dabbling with dark forces." Ffs.

haveyouopenedyourbowelstoday · 07/09/2022 11:20

I know you've had lots of requests...My first grandchild is imminent. Would your cards be able to tell me how soon and will everything be ok?

Same here. I remember someone warning me in the past and I thought they were just a low-vibrational, fear-based person who just wasn't as spiritually enlightened as me. Turns out they were right.

MattDillonsEyebrows · 07/09/2022 11:27

Are there some people who are just incredibly difficult to read?

I have had loads of readings. Most have been recommended by friends who have told me that (the reader) has known things about them that they could not have known and have had great results. My friends have no reason to lie, to me have not pushed me to go to see them, but I have on the back of their readings. However I go there, and get told generic things, and one tarot reader (Who came highly recommended) told me that I was difficult to read and she had to put more cards down.
I promise I never do anything like take my wedding ring off, I obviously don't give a lot away, but nothing clear ever comes back and it puts me off going.

Not sure if you're psychic as well but it's the same with psychics, my spirits never want to talk to me, and I get told things like 'they come to me in nature', but I clearly need something more obvious!!!

Scrolling through 'active' on Mumsnet has done away with klaxons these days. Good old web developers!

Mischance · 07/09/2022 11:37

Do you take money for doing this? I hope very much that you do not.

Do you take into account the consequences of what you say to people? - no-one can truly know another's emotional vulnerability.

How is your conscience?

MerlinsButler · 07/09/2022 11:42

Could we just keep this thread nice and chilled without all the hellfire and damnation claptrap. It's a really interesting topic and thank you @greenleafyleaves for starting this.

greenleafyleaves · 07/09/2022 11:43

@Itsmeagainyes I meant to ask about your home course - what's it involve, how much did it cost etc.

Like I say, I'd love to run courses and/or a Tarot circle, but a few things hold me back.

FanFckingTastic · 07/09/2022 11:44

Great thread! I was very interested in the cards when I was younger and still dable (purely self taught so I'm still learning) and I agree that whether you 'believe' in the readings or not it's a useful way of thinking through an issue.

Two questions....do you have a a particular spread that you find most useful? I've only every used the celtic cross or a single card so would be interested to know if you use different options for different situations / questions. Secondly (and this is more of personal one I suppose) what significance do you give to a suit reoccurring throughout the cards? I've been asking the cards how I can best help my son and the cards are almost exclusively wands... every time. I'm sure that there is a message in this but I'm not sure what!

greenleafyleaves · 07/09/2022 11:45

I had my cards read years ago. To be honest it has upset me and still does today. She was scarily accurate on most things but didnt mention DD2 at all, I was told all about DD1 and DS and their futures and careers ( spot on) but it was as if DD2 didnt exist. I worry that she saw something she didnt want to reveal. Could this be the case??

If this was the case, she didn't hide it very well!

I can see why this has upset up. Do you mind me asking the birth order of your children? I am very curious as to how DD2 shows up in the family. What are her roles in the family dynamic?

How many sets of cards do you have ?
Do you have a favourite set ?
Do you have a favourite card or a least favourite card ?

I loved these questions, thank you. I have about half a dozen I think. As soon as I find I'm not connecting with a set I give them away. Also, money is very tight for me at the moment, so I'm not able to buy new ones. I currently have two favourites, one is a Rider Waite Smith and the other is the Light Seer Deck. I tend to use the former most for myself though.

There are cards that feel like old friends when they show up; IV Swords, X Cups etc. My favourites are probably the obvious ones - The Sun, III Cups, The World etc. I like the positive ones and I love it when they show up for someone.

Least favourites? I have cards I struggle with. IX and X Wands for example I find difficult to interpret, The Moon I find it difficult to settle on a meaning...

Is it true you are not supposed to buy your own Tarot cards but have them given to you as a gift?

Yes, that's a commonly held belief. I don't have any truck with it though.

OP posts:
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/09/2022 11:53

Do you ever get a really really specific read? A lot of what I see and hear is fairly broad and open to interpretation (which is fine of course!), but I wondered if anything has ever come from the cards that is incredibly specific.

greenleafyleaves · 07/09/2022 11:54

I see you only work with a traditional deck. Why?

Good question. It made me realise how my own script and self-beliefs show up in my Tarot Reading. I'm not someone who takes short cuts or the easy path. I like working with a traditional deck because it has all of the 78 cards there, including the more difficult ones. Oracle cards and similar seem a bit of cop out to me. This prompts the question, "what am I missing out on when I narrow my options like this?".

OP posts:
greenleafyleaves · 07/09/2022 11:55

Which Tarot deck is your favourite / do you feel most affinity with?

There was that one deck I saw in the 90s. I wish I could find it again. As I said above, I think it was a one-off creation though. I love the colours and interpretation of the Light Seer Tarot, but I also miss some of the deeper imagery of the older decks.
