I read Tarot cards, ask me anything

Well, almost anything... I am not unwilling to do a few readings, but might not have the time to do lots. I'm interested in other kinds of discussion around Tarot.

How would you interpret that?

I would take it as reflecting the answer you needed at that time. But things change, and what’s meant for you changes.

I have found this thread so interesting as a fellow, slightly woo-sceptic tarot reader. I have read for quite a few years but mostly for myself, though I have given some accurate readings to others. I feel like there is something unexplainable about it, yet I find a lot of the beliefs of other tarot readers (eg. Spirit guides and so on) too out there for me.

I am wondering whether you every feel let down or disappointed by the cards? Sometimes I do a reading and can feel a bit upset if the cards I draw don't seem to fit the question/situation. I try to think of it as a challenge to look at things from a different angle... But sometimes I feel oddly betrayed and just huff and put the cards away 😂

Also I would like to read more for others but I always get so paralysed by the fear of either getting things completely off the mark, or having to deliver 'bad news'. How did you first get into reading for others and do you have any tips for building confidence initially?

By the way I love the loving-kindness style intention you set about not doing any arm at the beginning of a reading. I will definitely be trying that out next time I'm brave enough to read for someone else!

I could really do with some spiritual guidance right now. 🙏

Hey @Nora11 I'm sorry I missed your post. It seems like we're quite similar in our approach to the Tarot.

I don't think I have ever felt betrayed by the cards, ha! But I think there's a lot of benefit in recording the readings you do for yourself, because with hindsight I sometimes make a lot more sense of them. That's not me claiming that a reading becomes more accurate after the event(!) I'm saying that reflection is helpful. Again, it's not claiming that the cards can predict the future, just that they are a helpful tool for thinking about things. I'm not sure I've explained myself very well there.

How did you first get into reading for others and do you have any tips for building confidence initially?

I started by doing them for free for friends and family. Then I did them for free or low cost for strangers. Then I started doing them for payment as word of mouth spread around.

I've been intrigued by Tarot for a while now. Do you have any favorite cards or spreads that you like to work with? I've heard there are so many different interpretations and ways to do readings.

I've never had my cards read before, but I've always been curious about the whole process. What got you interested in Tarot in the first place?
Oh, and speaking of Tarot, I came across this really interesting post about tarot card meanings at https://moretarot.com/tarot-card-meanings. It's been super helpful in understanding the symbolism behind the cards.

I think that different cards have meant different thing to me at different times. If somebody is asking for a general Reading (rather than asking a specific question) I am a traditionalist and use the Celtic Cross. Otherwise I love a three-card spread.

I think everyone puts their own slant on interpretations, but I don't agree with the trend to "intuitive Reading". Again, as a bit of a traditionalist I think there are meanings that should be learned, out of respect for the women who came before us. I don't think it's sufficient to just look at the pictures(!). But this is just my opinion and I know others feel strongly otherwise.

Do you have favourite cards or spreads @iliasildur ?

Can you explain how it works - I am very sceptical, so can you convince me it's actually real?

I always think that it depends on what you mean by "real". I believe each person needs to decide on this for themself. Do you believe Tarot readers can predict the future? Do you believe they are clairvoyant or psychic? I don't believe in any of that.

I used to be very sceptical, to the point of rudeness, about anything woo so nowadays with a bit of life experience behind me, I try to hold my beliefs more lightly. I do believe that Tarot cards are an excellent tool for giving people some space, for reflecting on feelings or experiences, for re-framing problems, for giving hope etc.

I do experience uncanny accuracy that I find hard to explain. One part of me "knows" it's confirmation bias, coincidence etc. The other part of me finds it intriguing and exciting.

So, you actually got me out of bed (I'm hiding under the covers worried about various things) to answer this post and start working.

A few years ago when I very painfully reconnected with my birth father I was so distressed and overwhelmed by the experience that I sought out a tarot card reader. It wasn't in place of therapy - I knew I also needed to do that. It was just that for a brief moment in time I wanted someone to 'hold' the problem for me and, as you say, suggest some thoughts I could reflect on to see what landed and resonated.

It's often the case that people give advice to other people's problems with their own biases. I had this in spades with this situation, lots of people dug in and were invested in what I should do and basically talking to themselves when they were supposedly giving advice to me, which was part of the problem and also I think what I was escaping a bit.

Yes, friends don't charge you for this, but that can be a low bar! I can see why people get worried about 'charlatans' but this woman didn't hard sell me into any more sessions or suggest she had 'all' the answers. It was just half an hour of 'thinking' for me and 'holding me' and I appreciated it.

OVienna · 13/05/2024 09:55

I should clarify - talking to themselves but with VERY specific thoughts on what I should do, how I should feel, handle things etc. It was exhausting.
