Hi OP

I am booked in for SMILE next week and feel like cancelling- I am so scared. My main worry is needing glasses full time (not just for reading etc) and not being able to wear contacts. Do you know if having SMILE prevents you from ever wearing contacts again?

Furbaby65 · 20/10/2024 19:38

I was -10. Had it done 19 years ago. I'm now -0.75 and -1. Nearly 20 of being able to see.

@irishsea123 aww, please don't be scared. What is it you're worried about?

I don't think SMILE prevents you wearing contact lenses in the future, nobody told me if would. It's nearly 4 years since I had mine and still the best thing I've ever spent money on.

Thank-you. I think I've read too many horror stories of people ending up in a worse position than before - all these stories talk about not being able to wear contacts and only glasses. Can't find any reliable info though!!

@irishsea123 I've had a little Google and it looks like you definitely can wear them again in the future if you need to. Hope this reassured you and good luck!

@Vwswimmer1 thank-you. I have cancelled my surgery. Just so nervous 😭

Hi, I was thinking if SMILE too. I have a high prescription too. Can I check what were your ages when you had the procedure?
also for the ones whose vision has gone back to wearing glasses after 20 years, what procedure did you have?

EBearhug · 14/06/2026 00:25

I had Lasik around the turn of the century (can't remember the exact date,) in my late 20s. Had an eye test a couple of weeks ago - still don't need reading glasses at age 54, and optician was impressed with the smallest text I could read.
