I work currently as a chatline operator both doing texts and an online messaging service.

I used to work on the phones as well but stopped because I used to spend too long waiting for calls to come in sometimes, the text/online messages are more consistent.

Anyone have any questions?

If you want to move on to another job in time, how will you describe this one on your CV? Is the company you work for prepared to give you references?

I very much doubt they would give references, but maybe they would if asked. I will never put this job on a CV as I feel it would hinder my chances at anything mainstream.

It is actually a freelance position and I do a little bit of other adhoc admin type tasks, audio transcription etc here and there and it is all clumped together under my freelance working, so I won;t ever have to give specific details when it comes to other employment.

I imagine if someone were doing this as their only job then they would need to get a bit creative - freelance customer service perhaps

I used to do phone chat lines about 20 years ago and phone would ring as soon as I put it down. I guess things have changed now.

Would you prefer the work to be over the phone or are you happier providing a text service?

Also if you have a partner how do they feel about it?

The phones can be like that on a Friday or Saturday evening, but during the day the calls are not coming in quickly enough. I don't really want to do the unsocial hours.

I do have a husband, he knows what I do and doesn't mind, he knows it is just a job and is happy for me to make my own choices. That said I was never able to do the calls with him in the house, more because I just felt a bit silly. That is another reason I do the online stuff, I can do it when he is home.

I am happier with the text service really. When I was doing the phones it was fine, but I have to admit the text is easier even if it is more boring. It is a lot less effort because I can take time to think of a reply if I need to, I don't need to change my voice or make any silly noises, no worries whether the neighbours can hear me and if I am in a bad mood it is fine because they can't tell from my messages but on the phone they could probably hear a lack of enthusiasm. It is just easier all round.

Not hugely, no. I always knew about chatlines etc and of course a lot of men watch porn. Although sometimes I do look at men and wonder whether they use such services because really when you chat to them they are just 'normal' you would never tell by looking at them the kind of things that go on in their minds. But that is true for anything really I guess.

There are things that have surprised me though, such as the amount of men who want to explore things (not even really kinky stuff) but don't feel they can do that in real life.

Also, the number of elderly men who use these kind of services. I think on the phones it tended to be men of various ages but mostly 25-60 (if they were telling the truth about their age). But online I am seeing more and more men who are 70+ If nothing else I have been surprised how technologically savvy they are. Last week I was talking to man in in his 90's who said he was using his iphone. And the kind of sexual language from these older men has been a bit of a surprise too - there are some words you never expect to come from someone in their 80's or 90's!
