I work in a setting that supports rehabilitation of male serious offenders.

What do you think of sex offenders who are released when they have refused to participate in the prison rehabilitation programme?

Do you think it's right that the above is not mandatory for convicted paedophiles?

twirlypoo · 22/05/2019 18:44

Do you ever feel scared? Do you ever feel sorry for them?

UPR10 · 22/05/2019 18:50

I don't work in a prison, so not completely clued up on what their programmes entail I'm afraid.

What do you think of men self-identifying as women and entering female prisons?

UPR10 · 22/05/2019 18:52

Yes! Especially if the person has assaulted or threatened you previously.

It's difficult not to feel sympathy for some people that have too experienced horrendous abuse in their past/childhood.

Can sex offenders ever be properly, 100% rehabilitated?

What % of them reoffend, and how soon after release?

Do you personally believe in prison as a deterrent, a punishment, keeping the public safe, an opportunity for rehabilitation, or revenge? (I see it as a combination of the above depending on the crime, tbh...)

Thisnamechanger · 22/05/2019 18:55

Do you believe in "evil" or do you think their behaviors caused by being products of their environments/personality disorders etc.?

UPR10 · 22/05/2019 18:55

What do you think of men self-identifying as women and entering female prisons?

I support trans-rights. I do not support women being put at risk. Any movement in prison should be carefully risk assessed.

Do you feel the people you work with receive appropriate mental health support?

UPR10 · 22/05/2019 18:59

No, supervision is not mandatory. I believe female staff receive more support than male staff as males often present in a way that an ego has been bruised and deny any mental harm has taken place.

Sorry, pp, I've just reread and believe I've understood the question wrong. Do you mean the people I work with as in offenders, or colleagues?

OP posts:
SimonJT · 22/05/2019 19:07

The people you work with as in your clients.

UPR10 · 22/05/2019 19:07

Thinking about nature v nurture, I do view people become products of their environment. That doesn't mean to say that I don't view some people as bad people though.

There is always room for improvement, but overall, yes, I do believe there is sufficient support available to maintain a good sense of mental well-being.

I tend to think that many male offenders are subject to toxic masculinity and also emotionally illiterate or incompetent. This society tends to “teach” men that they don’t have feelings.

So what are the everyday things we can do in raising boys and interacting with men that could counter this harmful conditioning that male offenders seem to succumb to?

Thamesis · 22/05/2019 23:13

What do you consider to be a successful outcome, and do see many?

Thamesis · 22/05/2019 23:14

*do you see

Given that some people are clever, and very manipulative, and given that we’ve already seen one failure where Karen White was free to sexually assault women prisoners, do you realistically believe that a sufficiently robust system of gatekeeping can be devised that will guarantee not one single dangerous male identifying as a woman will be able to access women in prison?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 22/05/2019 23:32

Are you female? Are there many female members of staff working with male offenders?

I can't think of a less appealing workplace, personally.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 22/05/2019 23:34

Sorry, I meant - that's an unusual career path for a female, to work with male offenders. And I don't think I could be paid enough to be in a workplace with people who scare me.

Didn't mean to be so rude.
