In films women in early pregnancy always seem to have internal exams. Does this really happen, and if it does, why?

Nope did not happen, I saw my GP equivalent at 5 weeks. I had blood tests, and was told to choose a GYN or midwife.

My experience was the same, except I went straight to my ob/gyn and skipped the GP.
