In the title - I see a lot of threads on here asking about the bursary system. I have a very good understanding of it having managed to put four kids through private education for more or less free. Ask me anything!

Hi, My son recently did the entrance exam for a private school. We now anxiously await the outcome. I applied for a full bursary and I was told before he sat the exam he would receive 100% bursary if successful in the entrance tests. Do you think his very good school report had any bearing on this decision or it’s simply a matter of finances.?
Do schools take into account any background details such as domestic violence or for bursaries do they only care about academic brilliance’?
I would not claim that he is a genius but there have been these stumbling blocks and furthermore English is his second language. Would the school still expect a high flyer? Would they make allowances? They can give at least five free bursaries each year btw. I think he would have done well in the interview

Do you/did you pay for tutoring to get them to pass entrance exams?

Are you already earning quite well? Or do you find it hard when your children don’t appear as well off as their friends?

Do you still have to pay for trips, extra curricular activities and uniform?

What sort of income and outgoings did your household have in order to qualify? How intrusive were the household financial questions at your school?

Did you post this before? It sounds familiar.

Both my kids are on bursaries, but in 2 different schools. One of them includes transport and uniform and the other doesnt, same for trips.

My question is, I get the bursary as my ex does not work, and my salary qualifies for about 90% bursaries. The plan is to move in with my partner this summer, not sure how the finances would be calculated, his salary would not qualify for a bursary, but I obviously would not want/ expect him to pay my children school fees! so what happens in this scenario?

No tutoring as I cannot afford that. The criteria was 40,000 max pa I believe. I had a home visit and I had to submit my bank statements and I guess based on this information I was awarded a full bursary ( if my son is successful in the entrance exams)

Just realised the thread is from last July, hence why it sounded familiar!
