I see people ask all the time. So here you go. Been here 12 years.

Yes?

Do you work as well? I heard it might be tricky to survive on just one teacher's salary out there...

And schools prefer to try and employ teaching couples in order to cut down on accommodation costs etc.

Salary also depends on where you come from in many instances even amongst nationals of countries that aren’t Asian. It’s common for teachers for eg to be doing the same job in a school but to be on different pay scales.

HeyDolly · 12/07/2018 20:02

What’s your favourite thing to do in Dubai?

TheHulksPurplePanties · 12/07/2018 20:03

Flora is correct. DH and I are in different fields and met in Qatar.

Yes?

Sorry, I was trying to work out what salary your maid or your nanny would have been on if they were earning just under what your husband earned as a teacher.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 12/07/2018 20:07

HeyDolly camping during the winter months. We will drive the 30 miuntes to fujairah and spend an evening staring at the moon. Or go 20 minutes away to watch herds if gazelle and oryx at the endurance lakes.

Hulks: 45,000 aed a month?!?@

CurlyhairedAssassin · 12/07/2018 20:11

That’s over 9k a month!!!!

TheHulksPurplePanties · 12/07/2018 20:11

Flora dh earns 4000 aed a month as a "determined ones" teacher. Our Nanny was earning 3600aed a month.

"curly* yes
And that's if you just want to afford school fees, and rent, and groceries, and A once a year vacation

That makes sense now.

Floradoranora · 12/07/2018 20:17

That’s over 9k a month!!!!

It really wouldnt go far especially if school fees were for one of the top schools.

Smithy01 · 12/07/2018 20:17

I’m confused was the 45000 aed a month to live a typo? I’ve been to Dubai twice all be it on holiday but love the place.

DoraJar · 12/07/2018 21:43

Can you recommend a good hairdresser in Dubai (preferably in the Downtown area)

DoraJar · 12/07/2018 21:47

I’ve just moved here (6 weeks in) and someone in work recommended a trip to Fujairah today! Will definitely try this winter - bit hot atm and not got my driving licence yet!

PrimeraVez · 13/07/2018 18:07

Smithy, 45,000 a month is a good salary here but it doesn’t go far! (That’s in the ball park of what i bring home each month and whilst we have a ‘nice’ life, we aren’t exactly driving sports cars and dripping in diamonds)

BrazzleDazzleDay · 13/07/2018 18:13

Have you been to Kidzania? If so, is it as awesome as my nephew says.

Also, just booking flights to visit the il's, why the feck are flight taxes so damn high?

PrimeraVez · 13/07/2018 18:13

Dora, I like the salon in the Sofitel Downtown

DoraJar · 13/07/2018 19:27

@PrimeraVez - thank you!

desertgirl · 15/07/2018 04:58

Kidzania is pretty awesome for younger kids (my 11 and 10 year olds have outgrown it)

Brazzle, the high flight taxes are from the UK side. Noticeably higher than other destinations from here.

I wish. I had a great hair dresser but she just left and I don't know where she went!

Nope.

Fujairah is beautiful, Hatta is amazing. It's a bit cooler than Dubai as well, so not horrible in the summer.

Have you been to Kidzania?

It's alright. Nothing to write home about.

Totally self-interested....

Would you recommend Bab Al Shams beginning of August?!? I'm desperate for some guaranteed sun after months of rains where I love and the easiest thing for us to do is to stop at a hub on the way home for a few days. However there is a niggling thought that it will be like sticking my head in an oven and I'm not sure that's better than the trenchfoot I feel like I currently have....

Girlgoneglobal · 15/07/2018 08:10

*live

PamsterWheel · 15/07/2018 08:35

Why is an exit visa required? Why can't you just book a flight and go somewhere on a whim if you wanted to?

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 15/07/2018 08:56

When I copied فأر into Google it returned pictures of mice, is this what you meant?!

How often do you deal with Emiratis (is that the right term? The wealthy citizens) and what were your experiences?

Day to day how often do foreigners see/ hear about the poor immigrants working in bad conditions eg on building sites? Is it something you aren't really aware of if you don't go looking for information?

Can you still be put in jail for bankruptcy? Have you had to take any special precautions against the laws there?

What is the attitude to climate change in Dubai and amongst Emiratis in particular? And the attitude to reducing their own carbon emissions/ environmental footprint?
