Was it difficult to leave the religion?

There was already a Mormon one, think it might have been the original! They were practising though.

So! Why did you leave? I’m sure there are are a few reasons?

Any suggestions how to encourage someone to leave?

I converted at 21 from standard ‘christanity’ to Mormonism. I was enthralled by the sister and elder missionaries.

I left quite abruptly.

It’s hard to leave. You can throw science at them, you can reason with them but the fear of being out and losing everything they’ve ever known can petrify.

Oh, what made you convert?

I was walking home from work one day and met two elder missionaries on the bridge by my house. They were kind and sweet. I felt rude to turn them away. We made friends and they introduced me to other Mormons and it was a slow but steady indoctrination.

Did random people come up & say Hello or Hasa Diga Ebowe?

My friend was converted by a very good looking missionary. She was dropped like a hot stone by him once she’d been baptised. But she found a nice Mormon boy to marry, had babies for Jesus, and smiles as if she is on some kind of happy drug all the time. I miss her funny, sparky, former self. She’s smiling, bovine and dull these days.

I think Mormons target poorer areas where people are more vulnerable. Do you agree?

Did you have your name removed from the records?

Did you wear the magic underwear (I was intrigued about that in the last thread)? Was it hot in the summer?

I was a Mormon for 5 years.

I was married with a newborn and went to a Mormon Church in my new town, I went into the women’s class and had to leave after a young woman proudly announced that she couldn’t watch casualty anymore because of the ‘gays.’ That feminism had gone too far. That the devil attacks mothers because we are the cement that glues families together.

I couldn’t understand the disgust anymore and couldn’t pretend to. I picked up my baby and went home.

The underwear isn’t magic, like any headscarf isn’t magic. It’s simply worn for modesty.

I don’t know about Mormons in poorer areas. All the Mormons are I know are wealthy. Oxford educated mathematicians etc.

Mormonism, in my opinion, is a cult. A benign one nonetheless. It makes you feel like there is no other way to live. I loved some of it. I hold a lot of the values very close still. I miss my friends too. Young people like me (25

Is it true that Mormons think that in 1978 god changed his mind about black people.

I never came across any racism in Mormonism but it is less pronounced in the U.K.
the lady I spoke about regarding ‘the gays’ was a black lady. She often spoke about black people being the true vessel for the Prophet Joseph Smith. But that could just be... extremism.
I think in America they still believe all of that if I’m honest.

Is it really “benign” though when it oppresses women?
Are you aware of the massive prevalence of m(are multi level marketing companies that have Mormon links (founded by prominent Utah of Mormons)? Any thoughts on these? Tens of thousands of people in England alone have been sucked into them (mainly women). And the way they operate is very much like a cult...

It’s as benign is a cult can be in my opinion. If MLM is as bad as it gets, it’s not exactly Jonestown 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also I believe if you fall for MLM that’s a personal thing. I do not know anyone wuite that naive.
