Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

In light of the whole arts world supporting Macklemore over his censorship, who in the music industry supported Róisín Murphy?

MarcTheGenderSkeptic · 20/09/2026 09:43

To her, I could add who in TV over Linehan, dance over Rosie Kay?
Sure, JKR is too big to be cancelled, but I didn't see any writers flock to her side.
I'm sure I've missed a few.
So, pressure put on Eddie Sheeran to drop Macklemore for his overtly political Free Palestine! chants, banners etc.
Hey, I may not share his politics, but I don't believe in censorship.
But as the wave of support comes in for him, and let's face it, this cancellation can only boost his career, I'm right now asking where was the wave of anti-censorship support for Róisín Murphy a few years back, when <her own record label!> cancelled her?
Macklemore walks into his next gig next week, his artist-activist credentials burnished, his opportunities to boost his career scaled up.
Róisín? She was at existential risk of career collapse.
Rosie Kay? Did the dance community in any meaningful way support her freedom to speak up? Highlight the iniquity of her losing the school shed sweated to build?
Linehan? Well, he really is a salutary lesson in the Age Of Scolding.
I know I've missed a few.
And of course multiples more women in lesser positions, cancelled from running maternity classes, as Green party candidates (I know one personally), from sports teams, etc etc, all of them invaluable in their fields, but cancelled or silenced via threat of cancellation.
So, while I see the Macklemore cancellation as poor in an apparently freedom-valuing West, I know this is in effect arbitrary. He isn't being dropped by his record label, all venues not touching him, activists working to bury him. If he ran a singing school, he wouldn't have it taken from him. If he was a writer for TV, he wouldn't have all opportunities for a decade denied him, true poison pen culture behind his back and to his face.
So I ask, why when Macklemore gets a prime gig cancelled, the whole arts/activist/Omnicause world lifts him up, yet when Róisín/Rosie/Graeme get cancelled, the rest of the mass bear down in them?
Of course, we all know the answer. I'm just finding I need to articulate what I see as a hypocritical world doubling down.

Olive, with all due respect, welcome to Mumsnet. Maybe take a bit of time to read around and come back when you've got some thoughts and opinions of your own to discuss. If all you have to contribute is 'OMG you're all mad' then you're not really likely to have much constructive discussion here.

EasternStandard · 21/09/2026 14:38

Olivebrancher · 21/09/2026 14:37

Do you really? You’re really more upset by that than aligning yourself with racists bringing up two ‘tier policing’ etc?

Eh? When did Ed Sheeran do that?

Olivebrancher · 21/09/2026 14:38

ArabellaScott · 21/09/2026 14:32

What is with all the emojis?

oh I’m genuinely lost for words! I’m not gender critical but I think many of the gender critical people who are usually on these threads would be fairly horrified by this too.

BackToLurk · 21/09/2026 14:39

Olivebrancher · 21/09/2026 14:28

And do you think it also works the other way round? I.e. Are you aligning gender critical feminism with anti immigration and ‘climate change’ isn’t real viewpoints??

because I didn’t think you’d persuade me to stand up for gender critical views, but there are many regular gender critical posters on here who would be horrified by that, and spend a great deal of time explaining why they don’t believe their views are aligned with the far right etc 😮

There have certainly been attempts by parties of the right to create an 'omnicause of the right'. Their problem is that, in the UK at least, there is much more resistance from gender critical feminists to be bundled in alongside the other issues you mention. Similarly many people who would be labelled 'pro-Israel' or are Zionists are, understandably, reluctant to throw their lot in with in particular the far right.

The idea of an omnicause of supposedly progressive politics isn't any sort of 'conspiracy theory' though. It's pretty well documented and has its critics on all sides of the political spectrum. Many of whom find it reductive, naive, ideologically empty and frequently contradictory.

MarcTheGenderSkeptic · 21/09/2026 14:39

There's nothing conspiratorial in a label for a vast swathe of younger people and motivated policy makers, where intersectional politics means that there is a rigid adherence to "oppressor/oppressed" narratives, and adherence to a list of social justice positions allowing no dissent has codeified into tribal belonging.
From Gaza, to trans, to BLM, to climate emergency, to anti Reform.
Not only is the range all encompassing, but there's no pick'n'mix, and moving away from any previous positions risks alienation from the group.
There's always been a left bias on social justice issues, but never the cancel culture that keeps dissent to a minimum.
And it seems young women are most prone to it because of the social interaction that is societally coded better in females, and the risks and fallout of stepping on tripwires or moving away is overpowering.

Ed Sheeran didn’t!

You said you were more shocked by the treatement of Ed Sheeran than you were by the clearly racist, conspiracy theory based ‘omnicause’ posts that are popping up? You’re fighting with me whilst I’m just being shocked at a load of racism you’re ignoring!

I just wasn’t expecting the answer to be so mad. I was suprised by it.

do YOU think the ‘omnicause’ thing is reasonable? 😮

Okay, I'll say it

But men can be women just because they say they are, is not mad, rrright!!!

PS you may not recognise the Omnicause because you're part of it.

Olivebrancher · 21/09/2026 14:36

Oh I’ve heard how racists use the term ‘two tier policing’.

I promise you that the police are not more lenient towards black, Asian or ethnically diverse people than white people; they are not more lenient towards progressive causes than eg racist ones. It’s a racist myth.

Honestly I’m shocked to see this. I think those of us who challenge gender critical feminists have long suspected that sort of belief is often connected to other bigoted ways of thinking (eg racism) but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone just say it so loudly on these thread before 😮

I've heard how racists want an end to Israel as well as many on the Omnicause left.
Where are you going with this?
I have police officer clients who don't vote for Right parties who confirm two tier policing exists.

What about left activists who say two tier policing exists in things like stop and search, and deaths in custody of POC.
Was George Floyd's death a sign of racial animus two tier policing in the US?
Stephen Lawrence back in the day?
If you don't, you're gonna fall out with your left coded friends who believe UK society itself is two tier against the poor, migrants, trans etc.

I can't see that anyone else has pointed this out but I think it's salient. Macklemore wasn't asked to leave after his first show with Sheeran, but rather his second.
In the first show, he called for 'Free Palestine', yes, but he also streamed images of the war to the screen behind him and performed 'Hind's Hall' a song he wrote Hind Rajab. The song goes on about white supremacy, lying colonizers, Zionists and how it's 'all about the dollars' and fuck this and fuck that. (His follow up Hind's Hall 2 is similar).
A lot of the coverage seems to imply that he was asked to leave simply for saying 'Free Palestine' when it really is more than that.
As Sheeran pointed out, his audience includes families and children from all backgrounds.
However, after the first show, he still wasn't told to leave. He was simply told to leave the politics out in future. He was more than able to continue with the tour. No one told him he wasn't allowed to say all of those things in his own time or on his own tour if he ever had one, just to dial it down for Sheeran's one.
But then he did the same thing at the second show, knowing he would be booted off for it. Macklemore de-platformed himself.
Even if he wasn't clearly a raging anti-Semite, I'd have little empathy for him.
If I was hired for a job that had nothing to do with politics and then started ranting about Zionists in front of the customers, I could expect to get sacked and rightly so.
I do have some sympathy for Sheeran. He could have picked his line up better. I'd like to believe he was simply naive. The vitriol and hatred aimed at him has been unhinged. And as someone said upthread, it's pure bullying.

Yes, obviously I see the evidence and I believe the evidence points towards police actually treating black people and marginalized communities worse. I believe in systemic injustice, yes.

But the specific dog whistle phrase ‘two tier policing’ is used by racists to claim white people are treated worse.

Here we go.
So, it's fine to believe in racist policing and country, it's fine for you to have your belief in a two tier police force and British institutions generally?
<That> use of two tier is fine, not a conspiracy, that's all very self evident?
And it's fine for the TRAs to use the epithet of trans genocide and mass trans suicides?
That theory is ok, it's not a conspiracy theory?
Whatever, you've made my day.
First, you've never heard of the Omnicause before, and now you've heard it, you've dismissed it as a conspiracy, dog whistles etc.
You'll be telling us next that women objecting to men in their spaces are a transphobic dog whistle, calling trans IDing men as not women is bigoted etc.
And that it's somehow fine for Ed Sheeran to cop the flack he's getting, all the while Róisín Murphy was victim of only one thing, market forces.

Omnicause is a useful MN shorthand. I don't know if it's widely used elsewhere. In a Venn diagram I'd see it as a bunch of mostly but not entirely overlapping circles.

I've not read the full thread so this may have already been covered, did ES pick his own support acts, have right of veto or leave entirely up to someone else?

You haven't said anything of substance that would warrant the attention of the 'Big Names' all you done is cast aspersions, hurl insults, recite postmodernist doctrine and regurgitate KoolAid mantra's.
Plus you've been answered by one of MN's doyenne, but in your ignorance you don't realise it.

Love Hadley Freeman

As Hadley Freeman writes in The Jewish Chronicle, Omnicause is “the Fatberg of activism,” referring to the label given to a rock-like mass of unprocessed waste matter that can clog sewer systems.
