In light of the whole arts world supporting Macklemore over his censorship, who in the music industry supported Róisín Murphy?

To her, I could add who in TV over Linehan, dance over Rosie Kay?
Sure, JKR is too big to be cancelled, but I didn't see any writers flock to her side.
I'm sure I've missed a few.
So, pressure put on Eddie Sheeran to drop Macklemore for his overtly political Free Palestine! chants, banners etc.
Hey, I may not share his politics, but I don't believe in censorship.
But as the wave of support comes in for him, and let's face it, this cancellation can only boost his career, I'm right now asking where was the wave of anti-censorship support for Róisín Murphy a few years back, when <her own record label!> cancelled her?
Macklemore walks into his next gig next week, his artist-activist credentials burnished, his opportunities to boost his career scaled up.
Róisín? She was at existential risk of career collapse.
Rosie Kay? Did the dance community in any meaningful way support her freedom to speak up? Highlight the iniquity of her losing the school shed sweated to build?
Linehan? Well, he really is a salutary lesson in the Age Of Scolding.
I know I've missed a few.
And of course multiples more women in lesser positions, cancelled from running maternity classes, as Green party candidates (I know one personally), from sports teams, etc etc, all of them invaluable in their fields, but cancelled or silenced via threat of cancellation.
So, while I see the Macklemore cancellation as poor in an apparently freedom-valuing West, I know this is in effect arbitrary. He isn't being dropped by his record label, all venues not touching him, activists working to bury him. If he ran a singing school, he wouldn't have it taken from him. If he was a writer for TV, he wouldn't have all opportunities for a decade denied him, true poison pen culture behind his back and to his face.
So I ask, why when Macklemore gets a prime gig cancelled, the whole arts/activist/Omnicause world lifts him up, yet when Róisín/Rosie/Graeme get cancelled, the rest of the mass bear down in them?
Of course, we all know the answer. I'm just finding I need to articulate what I see as a hypocritical world doubling down.

Do you think the full quote is more respectful?

Not necessarily, but it's arguable accurate unlike your lazy assertion and misrepresentation. You'd already successfully misled another poster, see the post immediately below yours, the one with 'disingenuous' in it.

I'll believe that when I hear someone speaking out against the persecution of Christians in Sudan or Nigeria, Uighurs and other minorities in China, the war in Yemen. Why is it only Palestine that gets these popstars riled up?

Yea. Macklemore has both performed in Saudi Arabia and helped with Saudi’s attempts at sportswashing by performing at a LIV Golf event. His commitment to human rights is as selective as anyone else’s.

I wasn't respectful, the behaviour coming from the preformative arts doesn't deserve respect, the piles on, the name calling, the threats, the demands for total compliance with the narrative, the shunning of those who haven't and won't drink the KoolAid.

What's to respect? The behaviours are ugly, they are like trained seals, the fact that it's not respectful to point it out is of no consequence.
Think of my 'performance' as a gritty, no nonsense, depiction of zero fuck's to give about the feelz of over performing drama queens.

I can see you’re not willing to engage with any of the complexity of the conversation (e.g. what it means for Ed S to work with artists he knows full well are political when it benefits him and his tour, but then stepping back and claiming he isn’t political after all once it gets hard etc).

Thats up to you of course, but it’s a shame - there’s interesting conversations going on out there if you were willing to think any more deeply about what’s actually happened than just saying ‘but I don’t think Ed Sheeran concerts should be political’ over and over again.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 21/09/2026 13:27

ES's records have been pulled from the radio stations in Ireland, radio is part of the 'creative industry', yes. I love to know the complex reason for that is, has it been discovered that his world tour has been a front for drug smuggling and human trafficking and he knew about it, has a mass grave of babies been found in his back garden, did we just discover if you play his songs backwards they're chants for devil worship, because he's been a Satan worshipper all along?

What complex reason does the preformative arts have for its treatment of ES, if not the obvious one, which is, they're a bunch of ugly, performing seals, who are bullying and harassing someone who they don't approve of, because he didn't take the 'right' stand on something he has no interest in. Something everyone else in the 'arts' has decided is something that is the only, most, important thing ever in the whole wide world, in all of history forever and ever.

He made a bad choice when he picked the dickhead to share his tour with, maybe it wasn't his choice, maybe it was the people who are making money out of ES, the one's who's career depends entirely on the talent of others, that made the choice.

Who knows! who cares! the treatment that ED has been subjected to is wrong, it's not complex, it's not nuanced, just plan wrong.

I agree, it's a mistake that Sheeran took Macklemore on his tour.
Just as anyone working with Bob Vylan or Kneecap should expect nothing less than their open activism.
I'd be mad to work with Vylan and expect him not to scowl " death death death to the IDF!", or censor him.
Ditto working with Macklemore.
I think Sheeran was totally naive, and not a little full of himself, that he could get this clique's fans while being able to not suffer any controversy.
Otoh, what am I told by the Omnicausers in the last decade?
That it's ok for venue owners to cancel GC events and individuals, it's ok for those at a feminist meet to exclude GC women.
The venue doesn't agree with GC women, they can go fuck off.
So, why is it suddenly wrong for Robert Kraft to bar someone like Macklemore for anti semitic tropes as per his ridiculous and hateful "JewFace" costume from 2016?
As for these opinions on Róisín, she was doxxed by her own record company, zero publicity and cancelled marketing campaigns, while the activist hyenas rounded on her and any fans who expressed support...I saw the R/eddit mania against her.
To try and pretend she was being cancelled in any natural market forces way is totally disingenuous.
Rosie Kay had to relinquish her own dance company, ffs!
For all of Macklemore's current discomfort, Kraft, Sheeran etc aren't looking to drive him out of existence, but the Omnicausers smell blood in their victims, and attack like the cultural gatekeeping hyenas they are.

Sorry, I’m not really sure who the ‘omnicausers’ are? Genuine question!

Lentilcakes · 21/09/2026 13:40

Just come back from Synagogue- in thr sermon the Rabbi talked about how now you have to be aligned to one side or the other and even referenced Ed in a roundabout way. His point was, those on ‘one side’ should look at the other and widen their worldview.

The Omnicause is pro-Palestine, anti-Israel, TWAW, net zero, borders are bad, that kind of thing. People who can't see it are usually fully committed members of it.

People in the arts, media etc are getting bullied if they deviate from this set ideology, which is really bad and really boring.

Check out Nadia Whittome, she's a prototypical omnicauser.
Her views are the Omnicause views.
And any dissent from the Omnicause gets you so much less kudos and visibility.

We're really seeing the world for what it is.
Effectively a McCarthyite/Chinese Cultural Revolution moment for a generation that are snowflakes displaying no sign of critical thinking.
They did their dry run during the trans mania years, looking to doxx, cancel, humiliate any woman who spoke up for biology, women's rights and free speech.
Now they're off the leash, high on their virtuous supply, in another movement demanding absolute fealty on pain of cancellation.
Can you imagine the explosion from the Omnicause left if it was Macklemore who was having his music cancelled? They'd be out on the streets calling every radio station a Zionist plant.
I'm almost glad this is happening, this boil needs to be lanced.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 21/09/2026 13:58

The Omnicause is where all the world's problems, real but mostly imagined, has been rolled into one big cause.
The Omnicausians are people who are convinced they can solve all the worlds problems, real but mostly imagined, because they are of The One True Calling, and they have The One True Flag and The One True Chant to prove it.

I’m not saying supporting Ed Sheeran is unhinged (although I do think he’s been hypocritical and his difficulty now is partly of his own making - I.e. he has been choosing to work with politically vocal artists on his tour and to gain a kind of of credibility through that, and then he stepped back once the financial stakes got too high).

I’m saying this sudden tirade about an Omni-cause is a mad conspiracy theory.

ArabellaScott · 21/09/2026 14:26

But, you asked what Omnicause meant. So someone explained it to you.

And do you think it also works the other way round? I.e. Are you aligning gender critical feminism with anti immigration and ‘climate change’ isn’t real viewpoints??

because I didn’t think you’d persuade me to stand up for gender critical views, but there are many regular gender critical posters on here who would be horrified by that, and spend a great deal of time explaining why they don’t believe their views are aligned with the far right etc 😮

'gender critical' views describe the views held by the vast majority of people. That humans are one of two sexes, and that it's not possible to change sex.

This covers people from all political stripes and all walks of life.

Oh I’ve heard how racists use the term ‘two tier policing’.

I promise you that the police are not more lenient towards black, Asian or ethnically diverse people than white people; they are not more lenient towards progressive causes than eg racist ones. It’s a racist myth.

Honestly I’m shocked to see this. I think those of us who challenge gender critical feminists have long suspected that sort of belief is often connected to other bigoted ways of thinking (eg racism) but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone just say it so loudly on these thread before 😮
