"I want to take the time to acknowledge that the Government have laid the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s updated draft code of practice before Parliament. As hon. Members will know, the updated draft code reflects the Supreme Court’s judgment that, in the Equality Act 2010, “sex” means biological sex, and that there remain protections for trans people against discrimination, harassment or victimisation on the basis of gender reassignment. The judgment does not remove those legal protections for trans people, nor does it remove the legal framework, outside the Equality Act, that allows them to be recognised as being of their acquired gender. We firmly believe that it is possible to lawfully protect single-sex spaces, while also ensuring that trans people can access the services that they need and retain protections against discrimination and harassment. I understand the stress and anxiety that this process has caused for many, and my priority is for us to move forward together, with compassion for all who continue to be impacted. The fundamental principle is that everyone, including trans people, deserves to live their life with dignity, safety and respect."

Seems pretty clear on supporting single-sex spaces.

Well on another level, it is also reassuring as it would be quite disturbing to think that as she is part of as what are known as Labour power couples with another woman, that she though TWAW.

I wonder if the vote had just been down to Committee Members if she would have been voted in.

Although if you read her supporting statement (link in OP) it is very neutral.

Thankfully.

The footage of the committee whining on about problems with the law and the delays to the EHRC Guidance were just embarrassing. They sorely needed someone objective and able to balance rights

It sounds like classic fence sitting flimflam, and who's this we she refers to.

Anyone is better than Dodds. I’ll take it.

highame · 19/09/2026 08:33

Labour have a new strategy (or maybe an old one that has become obvious). It's a slight of hand and hidden actions. Watch out of lots of word salad and any if's, perhaps's, maybe's. Moving forward is also a catch all, meant to make you feel backward if you find 'inclusive' uncomfortable. I wait with interest.

Bailey winning is not great. The political climate is shifting though.

The Greens doubling down on attacking women's rights is an interesting contrast with the current byelection underway. At the moment Green and Lib Dem women members are appealing from support from Bridget Phillipson and Labour against sexism in their parties.

She is a longtime LGBTI+ activist who has spoken on behalf on trans rights many times before. She's a TRA at heart but she knows that the tides have turned so she has to pretend to be support the FWS ruling (for the sake of her career).

I think this is probably the reality.

And why her statement was so neutral as voting in Chair is Commons wide.

Bet if it had been just the Women and Equalities Committee she wouldn't have held back.

Just remember their treatment of Baroness Falkner.

Although of cause as said up tread, it could just a be a Labour strategy. No previous (as far as I know) with WEC - who i do think damaged their reputation with their sneering attitudes.

And also, sadly, but then this is the sort of superficial thinking of many, well she's a lesbian so no one will question what she says.

Sorry, I don't wish to hijack this thread but I've just heard that Michael Marra 8s the new leader of the Scottish Labour Party. Anyone know what his views are on gender? I don't think he warrants his own thread.

NotAtMyAge · 19/09/2026 19:55

According to the BBC report:

He did not cast a vote in the final ballot on reforms that would have made it easier for people to change their legally recognised sex.
It was reported at the time that Marra would have voted against the proposals, despite the Scottish Labour leadership's support for the bill.
Instead, he was given permission to miss the vote, therefore avoiding having to stand down as education spokesman for going against the party whip.

Also voted against the Scottish bill to legalise assisted dying.

I'm mildly encouraged by his election.

Who is new Scottish Labour leader Michael Marra?

The North East MSP has enjoyed a rapid rise to leader of his party.

Scottish Labour is probably the most pro women section of Labour as a whole now. They saw the disaster of gender stuff at first hand imposed by the SNP.

The blocking of Monica Lennon from standing as she was way more anti-women was partially due to her dumb views on the SNP's plans. She couldn't get support to stand. Claimed it was due to sexism but she has never said the whole letting men into women's spaces thing was awful.

So Scottish Labour is not perfect but better than other places. Thing is though they have no power.

I’m interested in politicians adopting this stance. I imagine that as they take up the position of arguing for a ‘more nuanced’ stance, they won’t find it possible to maintain TWAW. I think many MPs have maintained a TRA stance, by only engaging in the ‘most marginalised is society’ and .any objection is just bigotry’ narratives. If / when they find themselves adopting that it’s legit to want single sex provision, they need a new pro trans narrative. I’m very curious what that’ll look like.

I expect, for some, they’ll use word salad about what single sex means (so they include males in the definition of female), I think others will find their thinking (and therefore their position) changing. There was a reason TRAs ruthlessly defended the TWAW and No Debate position.

JamesKirkupReviewWritersFund · 20/09/2026 09:24

Re her statement in June linked above. She was on the gov payroll then as Equalities Minister so had to follow the govt line or resign her position if she felt she couldn’t do that

They obviously have to tow the party line that they accept the FWS ruling. But I think behind the scenes they do what they can to push for trans rights. For example Olivia Bailey has been pushing to get trans conversion therapy banned.
