Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

My work insisting I refer to a 9 year old as they/them

TheMadGardener · 11/09/2026 00:55

I work in a British primary school. Just started new term. Long standing pupil, a girl, is starting Year 5 now so she is 9 years old. No issues until now although parents are quite "alternative/new age."

Headteacher has informed staff that according to the child and her parents this girl has decided to be non-binary. Staff are now to refer to her as they/them and she is now using a gender-neutral shortened version of her name (think Alex instead of Alexandra or Jo instead of Joanna).

I am extremely uncomfortable with this and will definitely not be using they/them - I will be referring to the child by her chosen abbreviation to avoid using pronouns (at least it's a shortening of her real name rather than a made-up name).

Serious question: I thought new legislation discouraged schools from getting on board with this sort of thing? Or is it only they can't let children do it without parents knowing?

I'm finding it very hard to keep my mouth shut on my actual opinions in the presence of headteacher. (Colleagues I've spoken to on the quiet all think it is bullshit too)

You carried on sending your child to a school where she was seriously bullied and harassed every day to the point where she collapsed when she got home but the school just shrugged their shoulders and didn't try to stop it happening.

Why did you put your child through that?

Amazing DARVO well done. World-class, that one.

If shes female and dresses girly and fancies boy, she a fairly standard girl, no?

You should have taken her out of that school. It sounds horrendous.

He dresses as he wants, usually quite androgynously, and is a trans boy.

All you mean by ‘online transphobia’ is people refusing to pretend humans can change sex.

Take it up with Mother Nature. It’s not any of our faults that reality is how it is.

Hi there.

You've chosen to describe my trans son as my daughter, so your opinion is invalid to me.

Trans/nb kids are who they say they are, and don't require adults to tell them otherwise. Adult failure of imagination - and basic respect - is not their fault.

Have you - the feminist - actually started any threads about feminism, rape culture or anything to do with women's rights? Or anything else you'd like to tell us we should be discussing, in your view?

How are your "trans" second cousins? You haven't forgotten them have you? It must be difficult remembering all the different stories you have told us since you started posting on FWR. I notice you child is teens again when they had for a while been an adult. You need to write it down so your story stays consistent then we wouldn't think that you are making it all up.

I dip in and out, and have commented plenty on threads other than those demonstrating the malicious transphobia that's a hallmark of this place.

I find the large proportion of men posting about kids here very off-putting, and prefer to post elsewhere about family and feminist issues.

I mostly turn up to object to the transphobia, which I'm sure is obvious. Although there are many decent people here, the very fact that this thread is so massive by comparison with anything genuinely feminist - and it's about a child asking adults to respect and protect them - perfectly illustrates my point.

Refer to previous @TransParentlyAnnoyedre. Transphobia.

I also note your inability to respond and use of the excuse of “you’ve a different opinion to mine, won’t play along with my game, so your opinion is invalid”.

that’s the crux of people like you in discussions like this: you just refuse to listen to others opinions and if / when they differ to yours, you resort to insults and hyperbole.

People, including myself, are trying to have a rationale and calm discussion to help better understand the topic. I would for example be happy for you to present rationale that changes my opinion. But your eyes and ears are closed to anyone who, heaven forbid, has a different opinion.

MagpiePi · 17/09/2026 13:14

@TPA still no response on why you would allow your severely distressed child to continue going to a school where they were sexually harassed and bullied on a daily basis.

So that's a "no" then.

All these burning feminist issues and yet no time to start a thread about them.

Why not start a thread or two about those feminist issues instead of objecting to women talking about what they want to talk about, on a feminist board? Instead of trying to shut women down?

There's nothing whatsoever respectful in hounding this child.

Will note you don't need replies in future. Transphobia bores me, and apparently you don't want discussion.

See ya.

One again… no-one is hounding the child. Thats in your imagination.

You must cause yourself significant amounts of undue distress given you imagine so much unreal hatred and hounding. Stick to the facts and specifics

TPA, we're all about respecting and protecting children here -
from adults pushing questionable labels on to children who deserve all the support in the world so they don't think there is the slightest thing wrong with their bodies, so they know that their insides match their outsides, so they understand the fact that they will always be the sex they were born into, and so they know to beware of grown-ups who encourage them to believe otherwise.

MagpiePi · 17/09/2026 13:27

TransParentlyAnnoyed · 17/09/2026 12:12

I'm a feminist lmao. So is my son.

I was trying to make the points that

a) being trans is who someone is
b) it's not a costume. Lots of trans people don't conform to gender stereotypes, but are more likely to get harassed if they do this
c) trans people experience euphoria differently, and accepting them can ease it.

Discussing trans/nb people all day, demanding to know what they are - then dismissing their words when they tell you - is pretty odd behaviour.

Perhaps pursue a less destructive hobby, and one which would make you happier, than getting furious at a minority for existing? They have existed, and will exist in future, without your permission or understanding.

a) being trans is who someone is

What about detranistioners who were so sure they were ‘in the wrong body’ that they underwent radical surgery and took cross-sex hormones?

What about all the self-confessed men who experience autogynophilia and wear hyper sexualised woman costumes, or men who can be in ‘girl-mode’ or ‘boy-mode’ depending on what benefits them at the time?

Are they what being trans is?

PrancingPanda · 17/09/2026 13:37

TPA- transphobia is swiftly dealt with by MN mods. If you think it isn't being dealt with, please take it up with them. It is easy to report a post.

And as a Christian, I find your use of 'Christ' as an expletive, offensive. Or don't other protected groups matter?

GreyskySexRealistsky · 17/09/2026 13:37

Being a woman is who a female person is.

It's not a costume. Lots of women don't conform to gender stereotypes, but are still women.

Dismissing women's words when they tell you men can't be women is pretty odd behaviour.

A failure of basic respect is not women's fault.

It happened so often in school that he stopped reporting it. Some gay teachers took him under their wing and walked corridors with him when they could, and other teachers looked out for him in class. But the bus, library, canteen and other communal areas are unguardable, especially when it's a lot of kids doing it.

He used to come home every day and collapse, because of the effort required to be hypervigilant. The experience has badly scarred him. Didn't stop him being trans though.

Being transgender isn't a sexual orientation, and he was a child!

He's gay (i.e. likes men, he's a late teen now) and is trans. He's still much more 'girly' than his old mum. Because he's been supported, he feels confident enough to wear skirts, dresses, heels and make-up, secure in the knowledge that his family and friends know he's a trans boy.

Being trans isn't a sexual thing. It's literally just your inner gender not reflecting the outer. Trans boys who are given support are far less likely to bind, and many prefer to keep their breasts. If there were more public support for just accepting people's gender (and using their pronouns) without demanding their appearance reflected that gender, then fewer trans people would medically transition.

It's not about a wish to become a different gender. It's about already being that gender. Dysphoria becomes unbearable when that inner person is denied the chance to show themselves. Coming out is a relief because they can stop pretending to be someone else.

Being trans is not a paraphilia, and projecting that onto children is plain repulsive.

Being non-binary is very normal. I have always known I was different - didn't want to be a boy, though I wanted the freedoms boys had and always fought for them, but knew that 'girl' didn't fit me either. So now, I am beginning to refer to myself as non-binary.

Please tell me. Do you really, truly think that my being non-binary is a paraphilia? Any idea how that works? I'm straight, have a husband and three children. My coming out to my family was a hilarious non-event, not one of them cared and it's altered nothing. I just feel happier knowing I finally have a label which fits - because it's quietly bothered me my whole life.

How is that a paraphilia?

How is a non-binary child asking to have their pronouns respected, a paraphilia?

Seriously, how?!

Being "non-binary" is certainly normal. In fact it's probably pretty much the human norm. But most people just get on with it without feeling they have to force other people to lie about their sex, which is a physical fact.

The two only conflict if you internalise the idea that "man" and "woman" are some sort of inner state of being that limits and defines who you are, rather than a fact about one's body.

Using pronouns in accordance with perceived bodily sex is normal. If people doing that entirely normal thing throws you into a state of upset and fury, then why does it? They're just recognising what they can see with their own eyes. Why do you assume they are implying some profound and incorrect statement about you?

And children self declare as all sorts of things from cats to dinosaurs to aeroplanes and cars

naturally any parent will balance those claims with reality

You explicitly said to me that being trans was a paraphilia. "Real children Being impacted by an adult paraphilia" to quote you directly.

Being trans is being trans. It's who someone is, and if you aren't trans them you won't know how it feels.

I can't describe how being gay feels, or asexual, because I am neither. Yet I would never tell people they aren't, and respect that they know who they are. I can't describe how being (I'm not JK Rowling lmao.) Just because an aspect of who someone is, whether their sexuality or gender, is invisible, doesn't entitle anyone to dismiss it.

I cannot describe my sense of being nb. It's just who I am. I have always known it, and it's a huge relief to be able to name how I feel. It's important to me.

If you only know what being trans is if you are trans, and there's no objective definition of what 'being trans' is, how can we know that all the people who claim to 'be trans' are experiencing the same thing? How do they know they're experiencing the same thing as other people who claim to 'be trans'? They could all be experiencing something completely different from each other and labelling it with the same label.

I can't describe how being gay feels, or asexual, because I am neither.

This isn't a good comparison. You don't have to be gay or asexual to know that gay people are attracted to people of the same sex and asexual people don't feel sexual attraction towards anyone.

This is unlike trans, which according to you has no objective meaning or definition. It seems to mean whatever the person claiming to be trans wants it to mean.

It is a form of therapy.

TPA is (understandably) angry at the kids who bullied her child. TPA can vent that anger at posters here. It is, ironically, a safe space in which to do that. Posters here provide responses and attention. Posters here actually read TPAs posts and engage. Unfortunately it doesn't work the other way.

I agree. Occasionally getting upset/angry and resorting to insults can happen to anyone - it is often followed by an apology for 'losing it' and having a go at another poster, which is something I like about this boardSmile
But constantly posting OTT and insulting things - very often the same insulting things - time and time and time again becomes tiresome. doesn't it?
It's tiresome and ineffective, you [one] eventually stop paying attention to the same old same old hyperbolics.

Being gay means you are sexually attracted to your own sex.

That is quite easy to describe.

“Being trans is being trans. You just know.” That truly is a circular definition. Surely you can do better than that? Or are you just jumping on the gender bandwagon?

You have a daughter who thinks somehow she is a boy but also “has the confidence” to wear “girly clothes” and fancies boys.
Sounds like a girl to me. What does she mean by thinks she is a boy?

Have you asked her? Or did you just cheer her on? What about her is male?

This needs an actual psychiatrist - but I have seen it expressed by girls who have some through this phase that “I am really a boy” just means “I am a full human being and not some half-human known as a girl”.

It is a rejection of the second class status of the female and the belief that default human = male.

thirdfiddle · 17/09/2026 20:36

The illogic of the whole thing. How do I know whether I'm trans? You just feel a mystical sense of knowing that you are a particular word attached to no meaning at all. "But if you ask the question you probably are." This is what is said by trans people and organisations to children. No wonder kids think they are trans.

Then there's if you don't feel a sense of gender identity, you're agender, which is a type of NB. Maybe that's the one this young girl has fallen for if her parents are into this stuff. By that definition all of the MN feminism board is NB except a couple of irregular angry visitors. Slightly awkward for those saying we can't know anything about it because we're not trans - when by their own definitions we are.
