Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, who enjoy doing this, and any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

I saw this on Instagram and thought of the previous conversations about cloisters and architecture. www.instagram.com/reel/DcRZB_PBFkr/?igsi=MTRteHlkanp1b2tyeQ==

OK so I'm going to over share here. DH pulls his pants down to his knees while standing up. The pants fall to the floor and DH steps out of them, flicks them into the air with his foot, catches them and drops them into the linen basket. A joy to watch.

Colin can join them to demonstrate beautiful elongated Downward and Upward Dog poses. Dachshunds are also surprisingly good at sit-ups. But he’s got a pass on trying to stand on one leg. Leave that one to the birds!

Edited

I think the Walrus also gets a pass on trying to stand on one leg.

With apologies to Messrs Walrus, Dragon and Puffling for co-opting them.

I think this has to be the only image I've ever asked Gemini to ADD men to!

Perhaps they need to get a Pilates class going there so the chaps are better at standing on one leg and bending in various ways?

I know just the gerbil!

Mental note to make sure the gerbils at the Staunch Ally have good ladders and plentiful supplies of things for cleaning walls.

Ah, I've managed to pop in fairly early this time.

I've been to another part of the country, nothing like as rural as last weekend's, and yet I spotted tractors over a hedge and lo and behold, a ploughing competition in progress!

ErrolTheDragon · 05/09/2026 14:04

Re the mosquitoes whine, I doubt it’s evolved as an advantageous feature, more it’s just a side effect of their very fast wingbeat. Most of their prey won’t have flyswats or folded newspapers etc at their disposal so being audible may not be a huge disadvantage.

Mr Dragon is a sinister, but he doesn’t lean on the wall while dressing and leave marks. TBH I’m not sure I’ve ever noticed if he sits or stands - I’m not sure he needs to do either - but if he does lean on anything it’d be the wardrobe or tiled bathroom so I don’t care.

If anyone likes rum, may I recommend Jerry Can Spiced? It's less sickly than a lot of spiced rums plus money from every bottle goes to veteran charities. Sorry if that's a bit random, I've been buying it for a while now and it is definitely in my top 5 favourite tipples. I may have drunk a bit too much tonight!

Probably rum inspired, but I am feeling a bit sad that my best friend (who I am so similar to that mutual friends tease us that we're basically the same person) is still so "be kind". I was until about 8/9 years ago and she is 13 years younger than me, but it's just so frustrating. We've agreed not to speak to such things as we don't want to fall out, and both being so opinionated means it would be an epic falling out, but it just annoys me that she's so oblivious. Kids!! 😁

@RumNotRuni have a similar situation with my best friend, although she is seven years older than me. She is a retired clinical social worker, a great follower of progressive policies and knows some transwomen through her husband’s AA group, and I think that and “be kind” is what motivates her. However I have managed to convince her that men should not be in women’s sports or women’s prisons, but not beyond that. We just have an agreement not ago talk about the issue.

My sympathies on the mozzie front, Magpie. We have been beset by the little buggers too, hence the bloodstain on the bedroom wall, where I despatched a satiated and slumbering one with a quick slap.

I always wonder, why that bloody high pitched whine? It warns you that one is incoming, giving you time to withdraw your limbs, ears etc beneath the sheet. It might even wake you up. The whine means that you respond to what might be something landing on your person by whacking it, rather than dozing through it or just moving to dislodge it. In other words, what evolutionary benefit does that high-pitched 'Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee' have for the mozzie?

Other than enabling it to annoy the bejazzus out of people.

My theory is that it enables them to keep you awake for long enough that when you finally fall asleep, it's so deeply they can feast as much as they want. Nasty whiny buggers. Senior Master Magpie squashed 5 last night.

EdithStourton · 05/09/2026 13:31

Oh dear. I'm reaching seething rage on the Parkrun thread. Time to stop using Brains as a cross between a footstool and a foot warmer (she lay there, she's happy) and go and do some gardening.

Make a feature of it!
140mm x 145mm Hand Print Indoor Wall Stickers / Graphics
They might even do it in sparkly, or matched to your fave nail polish😁
I've just seen that there's a minimum order of 5 - that's 5 pairs, that's 10 DHs - do we have enough DHs doing the same thing to make it economically viable to club together?

Very sorry about the mozzie bitesFlowers
Mozzies? where do you live, a Rain Forest, or the Everglades, or somewhere like that, Magpie*??😮

edited to remove one of those random 'I was bo-orn under a wandering star' asterisks!

Edited

Only 10 DHs if they're evenly split between dexters and sinisters. Mine's a dexter.

The mozzies are undoubtedly breeding in the slow running millstream at the bottom of the garden. We're downstream of the sluice gate and I suspect it's been diverted to the river all summer to try and keep some flow going.

MarieDeGournay · 05/09/2026 12:51

Photo lost when I edited to remove asterisk🙄
You can also add wording - heh heh heh😈

Morning all. I think it's morning, anyway, I spent most of the night listening to a dive-bombing mozzie. Woken up to a number of new bites including a huge red wheal on the back of one leg which will fetchingly offset the dress I'm wearing to a party this evening. Dress, see page 32, mozzie bites and accessories, model's own.
And the light in the bedroom is currently just right to illuminate a metre-square grubby patch on the wall where Mr Magpie props himself up with one hand while putting on or taking off underwear (no, I don't understand why he can't sit down to achieve this either) so I'm going to have to do something about that. Point it out to him and let him deal with it would be the preferred course of action.

Sympathy for the mozzie bites. I too react fiercely to the blighters.

You have no idea how pleased I am to learn that my DH isn't the only man to do this.😉

I'm just impressed that he can achieve this with only one hand - and probably standing on one leg too!Grin

Morning, all! Flat white and a fresh croissant please.

Two pages into the new place already, I'm sooo behind, last time I looked I was still over on Chat, I suppose I'd better go back and read that to the finish - I have a bad habit of starting new things before I've finished the old one - jars of honey, tubes of toothpaste...
No, NOT relationships, thank you very much whoever it was who suggested that sotto voce, how dare you😁

Thank you for the lovely new place, Glad, looking forward to settling in and catching up with everyone's news. And Gosie.

Harriet loves the new place too, and would like everyone to join her in a cup of tea...
<Harriet, love, that's just a turn of phrase. And there are a lot of us. And most of us are considerably bigger than you... no don't cry, it was a lovely thought. Tell you what, why don't you go and put on your lovely Christmas red and white hat on, and show us how lovely you look in it?>
Phew, crisis averted I think!

Here is the last of the trucks. It was diverted to pick up the Gerbil Band from the music festival 🎶

I'll name that tune in 3...00
