Today was another Parkrun Saturday and like every weekend the achievements by women was demoted by men running in the female category.

We are hoping to change this! In only a few weeks time, we will debut Reality Rules Runners UK at Parkrun. We hope that many hundreds (hopefully thousands) of you will join us to send a clear and strong statement to Parkrun about the huge support there is for fairness and sex-based categories at their events.

All sports events are responsible for putting on fair events. This includes free, volunteer run, community events like Parkrun.

So please tell people about Reality Rules Runners UK, as we are hoping to attract lots more supporters before our debut at Parkrun on 3 October.

Thank you! 🙏

Being ‘not official’ still doesn’t mean it is not competitive. It still doesn’t remove the onus of parkrun changing the policy to make the female category protected as per the law.

Nor does the amount of positive benefits to parkrun change the obligation to follow the EA 2010 guidance.

I agree. My point is that parkrun times don't officially count anywhere. People can be, and are, competitive at parkrun, but ultimately its meaningless really.

See, I'd have been interested in Parkrun as I need to get fitter and it seemed a nice way in.

Unfortunately this whole sneering at women thing has put me right off. I get the impression its full of laddish blokes and women are tolerated/dismissed/used as useful volunteers.

That's not my experience at all and I've been doing it for years. Parkruns vary. If you choose a smaller one - less than 200 runners - with a slower course, you'll be fine.

It can seem that way from these discussions, but it's not my experience as a fairly long term parkrunner who has done a decent bit of parkrun tourism. Half the people discussing it (on either side) sound like they don't attend.
There really is a mix of super speedy competitive runners (male and female), middling 30+ minute runner who are either maintaining or working on their speed, and slower runners/walkers who are either improving, maintaing, or socialising. It's a common joke at parkrun that you can run your heart out and be overtaken by an 80 year old, a 9 year old in paw patrol trainers, and somebody pushing twins in a double buggy. Respect goes in all directions (except for funnel duckers who everyone judges).

But not meaningless enough to

Do away with the categories and placings altogether

Or tell males they can’t register as females.

It only seems to be ‘meaningless’ when women are looking for fair competition for themselves

Oh, I'm sure I'd be fine. The question is whether I want to support an organisation that is anti women.

The other thing that’s very telling in this discussion is this idea that it would be a shame if such a positive venture was ruined.

With the onus on women to StFU and not ‘ruin’ it.

But it’s management that are ruining it in the first place by not enforcing fair rules. And cheating men who want to take things that should be for women.

Can we hold the right people accountable please?

It shouldn’t always be expected that women shut up and put up for the ‘greater good’? 🙄

Where is the facepalm emoji?

and here's the inability to see that you might be slow. but you're still competing , maybe to get from 200th to 100th place or competing in your age category which is a slow one. Just because you're slower doesn't meant it isn't a competion for a better placement amongst your peers. And it would be nice to there isn't a male in your groupng muddying up the stats .

I don’t think it’s even as though anyone is expecting much enforcement - just rules that signal that the stats they produce are as important to women as to men and that therefore it’s anti-social to submit inaccurate data.

The current argument against this is 'how do you enforce this' usually with some nonsense about 'genital inspections'.

The problem we have across the board is that the social contract of 15-20 years ago has been broken. We did not need to have security outside of single sex spaces etc as everyone knew that men were not allowed in. Those men who tried could be called out by women and members of the public would be on hand to assist. Now men are emboldened to invade these spaces or push boundaries under the guise of 'be kind' and with the knowledge that there is a willing cohort of gender woo ideologues to protect them.

Doowoddy · 03/09/2026 10:28

All that needs to happen is when a man is observed cheating it can be reported by any parkrunner and their results will be deleted. They can still run, they don't need to be stopped from running or finishing, it only matters when the data is shown to be inaccurate that it is changed.
They won't mind as it's just a fun run.

SadiraOfTyr · 03/09/2026 10:44

ProtectTransLives · 02/09/2026 16:00

Parkrun is not competitive! All this would make sense in competitive sports but why the sudden focus on parkrun? Why can’t you just admit all this is based around transphobia? And if JKR has never piped up about all this you never would’ve thought about it, would you?

ParkRun is competitive - it’s a mass start event with timings and rankings. Yes, the majority of runners are just running against their own time, but the same is true of any mass start event - you wouldn’t claim that a marathon or Gran Fondo was non-competitive would you? Or a TT which isn’t even mass start?

The issue is very simple - it is not against ParkRun’s rules for men to register and run as women, and we think that is wrong.

That Is not what is being proposed and would open up ParkRun and the volunteers who turn up every Saturday to a lot of potential risk. It would also be impossible: ParkRun doesn’t use race numbers so how would you even identify someone who was cheating?

What is being proposed is simply a rule change and setting the expectation that the rules will be honoured. All of ParkRun works on the honour system.

The complaint is that ParkRun are not setting fair rules, not that they are not enforcing them. There is no means to enforce rules - it’s an honour system.

Thanks for the clarification, I've been over thinking how it can 'work' but you're totally right.

But it’s not meaningless. There are frequently media stories about Parkrun feats. Fastest result. Fastest man. Fastest woman. Fastest child. Fastest old person. Celebrities doing Parkrun. It generates media. It generates publicity for Parkrun. Parkrun is big enough on its own to mean something for its own sake. Saying “it’s meaningless” is like saying the European championship 5000m is meaningless.

All sporting achievements are meaningless really. But a lot of people still want them to be measured and recorded, so why not measure and record them in meaningful ways?

Don't forget that the women's fastest time for the Aberystwyth Parkrun is held by a man who is currently in prison for attempted murder of a UK Athletics official he had been in a dispute with over his eligibility to compete as a female athlete when he was born male.

could it be that this precedent is part of the reason why Parkrun are so loathe to say 'no' to transwomen.

No one is asking ParkRun to say ‘no’ to transwomen. We are just asking them to
clarify that runners should register according to their sex.

SwirlyGates · 03/09/2026 13:33

In reality, all parkrun times are unofficial and, imo, there are various timing issues which affect slower runners.

Yes! At one of my local ones they have markers at the start saying e.g. "20min", "25min", "30min" etc. so that the faster runners are at the front of the pack and not trying to get past the slow people on a narrow track Of course, this means they don't have as far to run! Plus if it's busy the slower people can take a while to get started, while the sprinters are already haring off. This part doesn't really bother me, mind you, as I'm not trying to win, but it does count against the slower runners time-wise.

ThisFunSheep · 03/09/2026 13:44

Changing the topic slightly, has anyone tried approaching their local councils about this?

Mostly these are held in public parks so the council will have to grant permission, usually subject to certain safeguards and conditions.

Councils have various equality duties - the public sector equality duty is stronger than the equality act - so might be an avenue to go down.

It seems perfectly reasonable to be that where it's a timed run it should have a fair women's category not just a mens.

R.e. timing issues, I don't think they apply much to the start of the races or smaller ones. It's also more about rankings than the times. I.e. women want to rank first if they come first.

Sure. But Jeska demonstrates how well that can go down.
