What are you talking about? Adults are not the same as children!

Adult butch women were never children with the same gendered inclinations?

Whether you can accept it or not JKR is engaging in a faulty generalisation about trans men suffering from tom boy syndrome because she is comparing her own 'tom boy' experience to it not to mention this is a widely used trope in the anti trans community. What's also eerily similar to Trump is the plausible deniability get out of jail free card of not all trans/mexicans they slip in at the end.
As a teacher I have a lot of experience with teenage girls and have been one myself. It is very common for teenagers to get caught up in trends and identify as NB, trans, asexual only to drop it a few years later. I say very common, five years ago it was very common but seems to be tapering off now.

So would you say the same about adult women who are butch lesbians? Or do they get a pass from 'tom boy' phase?

And presumably these women were girls at one stage or not?

I think it’s a bit naive to believe Rupert Grint ever had strong feelings either way about trans people or JKR’s opinions. I doubt he gave a shit, he was just saying what he thought most of his fans wanted to hear, to stay relevant/popular/keep earning money. I guess popular opinion has shifted slightly now, enough to not get cancelled for being associated with JKR anyway..

None of what you have said relates to anything I have said here.

Your first argument is: I think this entirely unrelated quote from trump is similar, discuss why it’s not. That’s not responding to my argument, it’s more of a cross between a sea lion (trying to make someone else do your work for you) and a Gish gallop (throwing so many spurious arguments at a person that they can’t deal with the main one). I’m not about to go discussing things Trump has said, I’m discussing things Rowling has said.

Your other argument was that what the thing that Trump said that you believe was the same as Rowling’s quote was a faulty generalisation, but no generalisations were made in Rowling’s quote or in my argument. The person making faulty generalisations was Trump, But no one here is defending his points about Mexicans.

If you want to explain why Rowling saying she once may have felt like transitioning is like Trump over generalising about Mexicans, I’m afraid you’ll have to do more work than saying “This is just like…” because it’s not just like. In fact, it’s nothing like.

I’m not about to go discussing things Trump has said, I’m discussing things Rowling has said.

Of course not. Because you know they are both making faulty generalisations & its painful to know your hero & Trump use the same bigoted tactics.

But yeah, do go on denying the undeniable symmetry.

I can't quite believe that it is 2026, and still mumsnet has never had a poster like @Northernlightsss directly quote JKR. They are seemingly incapable of directly quoting her words that they claim are 'phobic'.

Never.

Not once.

Isn't that baffling?

I wonder if RG will feel the need to comment officially on his choice or if he'll let it slide.

It would be more sensible for him to go down the non-explanation route. Tom Felton's already established a successful playbook for how to manage one's return, albeit it was much easier for him. Ignore the trans lobby, who are now lost to him, and lean into the fanbase. That's where the money and success is to be found.

Plus I've always had the impression Rupert prefers not saying that much publicly anyway.

He’s probably in debt. He did owe the taxman a vast amount!

I'd forgotten about that. It seems he's had a couple of run-ins with the taxman over the years. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0rgkkpl0dno

Trump could make the exact same arguments about his 'Mexicans' statement. Why is this any different? And some make the exact same claims about Muslims as terrorists.

Making a show of pointing to exceptions from the norm to justify exclusion effectively smears the whole as being under suspicion. And Its in far right playbook to exploit instances as evidence of the necessity for exclusion.

The logical fallacy here is know as a faulty generalisation & it occurs particularly regarding minorities when a person draws a broad, sweeping conclusion about an entire demographic or minority group based on the actions or traits of a single individual or a tiny fringe minority AKA detransitioners.

Time to go back to Reddit where this type of bullshit is tollerated.

We are against stereotypes for making judgements about what is “suitable” or “acceptable” clothing or career choice.

No aren't. GC's assert that associating typical behaviours to sex is stereotyping.

Nice mansplaining. 🤔

It’s good to see that some posters are trying to get this thread back on track. Sadly, I fear such efforts are doomed because other posters just keep on feeding.

Maybe they are linked. Maybe the poverty of the arguments against JKR (ably demonstrated on this thread), the reliance on one poorly written article, the MRA-adjacent ‘not all menning’, the inability to articulate in their own words exactly what is so bigoted about single-sex spaces, the attempts to obfuscate etc, etc all contribute to a landscape where people look and say “yea, when you blow away the smoke and remove the mirrors, those accusations don’t really hold up under scrutiny”.

That is not the same as understanding that males as a class are significantly bigger, stronger, commit 98% of sex crime, and some male individuals are a danger to women.

Stereotypical behaviours do not change your sex. This is about sex. The rest is obfuscation and waffle and word games.

Plus also, the stuff he's said is a way short of what Emma and Daniel did. I don't think it precluded working with someone who holds different views to him, if indeed those are his genuine views. In the same way as JKR herself said she wouldn't avoid working with someone simply because she and they disagreed on the trans issue. Who knows, maybe things have happened behind the scenes that we're not party to because neither of them did an Emma Watson.

I do think it's an interesting sign of the times though. Not sure this would've happened in say 2019. And it's not like Tom Felton being involved, which was unsurprising.

I agree, and whatever views he still holds this is an enormously positive sign for things having turned in the right direction.

I feel seeing some very bright women dismantle a TRA is a nice accompaniment to a chat about Rupert Grint's career choices 😁

Taking a part in an author's work does not imply acceptance of all that author's views. Roald Dahl has some odd ideas, no-one has ever assumed that the entire case of every film and play based on those books subscribes to them; likewise no-one assumes that everyone taking part in a Wagner opera supports fascist views.

Absolutely. But the wailing over on Instagram suggests the 'trans community' doesn't share this view.

Northernlightsss · 27/08/2026 08:30

MagpiePi · 27/08/2026 08:22

Making a show of pointing to exceptions from the norm to justify exclusion effectively smears the whole as being under suspicion.

So what you are saying is few men will rape women if they are allowed into women's spaces but that is ok because they are the exception and NAMALT. Let's not forget rule 10, The worst thing about male violence is that it makes men look bad.

And Its in far right playbook to exploit instances as evidence of the necessity for exclusion.

ie. Women are far right bigots if they want to exclude men because of evidenced instances that they get raped when men are not excluded from women's spaces.

Rape is illegal so I don't know what you are blabbering on about.

You seem to be making an argument that justifies banning Muslims 'cause terrorism'.

What next? Ban men from the work place? Chaperones on dates?

hastenotwaste · 27/08/2026 08:30

The logical error being made here is that all men offend at the same rate when the data shows the substantially higher rates of offending are young, poor, straight males as opposed to older wealthier or homosexual males. In fact the research shows homosexual males violently offend at a lower rate than lesbians.

No, I didn't say that all men offend at the same rate that is your error. Male/female is by far the most effective division when it comes to protecting women and girls - we can't interview all men before letting them into female areas that would be ridiculous. In any case, safety aside my teenage daughter and her friends do not want to share female facilities with males or compete with males. Gender identity is not important to them only sex.

nutmeg7 · 27/08/2026 08:28
