Lactation support conference in Ireland - the quiet part out loud

'This year’s program lists a lactation consultant called Jacob Engelsman speaking on “communicating inclusively: creating gender-affirming clinical spaces for families” and “lactation support for gender-diverse families”.'

'Jacob Engelsman is a Certified Lactation Consultant based in the US. He describes himself as an infant care specialist, speaker, and writer. He is the author of a recently published book, Lactation for the Rest of Us: A Guide for Queer and Trans Parents and Helpers, and specialises in inducing lactation in non-gestational parents (parents who haven’t given birth). “Lactation is for anyone” Jacob tells us in this podcast interview.
Engelsman’s interest and expertise is not limited to lactation for the purpose of feeding an infant. One of his previous presentations was “Inducing Lactation for Kinksters” and according to his CV he has been giving various talks including on lactation at Frolicon, an adult lifestyle and fetish convention held annually in Atlanta, Georgia with substantial programming around kink, BDSM, sexuality, polyamory, LGBTQ+ relationships and alternative sexual/family cultures.
He is not a nurse, midwife, doctor, or healthcare professional (nor does he claim to be). He is not a parent or someone with personal experience of breastfeeding. He got his certification five years ago and prior to that worked in the food service industry.'
...
'Why would a man want to lactate? In Engelsman’s own words:
“There are several reasons a person may choose to lactate regardless of whether they can gestate a child…a non-gestational parent might choose to induce lactation as a way to feel emotionally closer to the baby, assert their own feelings of parenthood, gender euphoria, or just for the unique experience of it.” (p.49)
Writing specifically about “cis” men, that is men who identify as men, he says:
“As to the question of why they would want to, it seems reasonable to believe that cis men want to lactate for the same reasons as anyone else. Which is to say, usually to feed and bond with their baby and to a lesser extent for curiosity, fun, or sexual gratification.” (p.152)'

Where Does Male Lactation Fit in Breastfeeding Support Networks? — Genspect

I'm sure there's truth in that.

But be that as it may, it's illegal to encourage people into the sexual abuse of a child. It doesn't matter how much they fondly imagine it's progressive.

It is amazing that he feels he can say what he says with impunity. The problem is that he's purely talking about the reactions of the men in these circumstances. Is stating that a sufficient defence against the kind of criticism you're making?
I'm not looking to split hairs, I just wonder if listing the benefits to men falls into the strict legal category you're suggesting?

I don't know. But he's already set up a thing called breastfeeding for kinksters.

The entire concept would be illegal. I'm sure it's only a question of time.

For the purpose of such materials, and throughout ALCI Education Events, the terms Breastfeeding and Mother are chosen without bias or prejudice.

I know others might not agree, but I do give them credit for agreeing that 'mother' and 'breastfeeding' can be used as neutral terms that don't imply anything about identity/personality/behavour/preferences.

However, I'm baffled that they don't understand why it's necessary to exclude fetishists/the fetish adjacent from their conference, or why they think somebody with these links is the best person to advise the people who are overwhelmingly likely to be seeking their advice - women, regardless of how they identify.

It's all very Jolyon Maugham 'helping black and brown people'.

This is an example of the damage that the 'LGBTQ+ acronym does to the LGB community - men attempting to appropriate women's biological functions is not a lesbian and gay thing, it's a trans thing, and yet again 'Gender Diversity' = transgenderism.

But you can see how it will be portrayed - pearl-clutching right-wingers cancelling an LGBTI+ speaker. The ALCI statement is clinging to the 'diversity' line, and specifically refers to the Irish govt's 'LGBTQI+ [sic]' strategy as justification.
LGB✂T is urgently needed.

But it's not like the ALCI's invitation to JE was an oversight, and they didn't check what he was going to be talking about .
They make it clear on their website that 'chestfeeding' by men is part of their 'ethos'
ALCI Ethos
ALCI is dedicated to the Protection, Promotion and Support of Breastfeeding for all persons. ALCI is inclusive to all persons and the intention of our written material, protocols, statements and position statements is to remain inclusive to all breastfeeding, chest feeding and human milk feeding individuals. For the purpose of such materials, and throughout ALCI Education Events, the terms Breastfeeding and Mother are chosen without bias or prejudice. ALCI fosters a positive ethos and operates a policy of equal respect, regard and fair treatment for all Council Members, Members, Attendees, Speakers, Exhibitors, Hospitality Staff and Visitors.
Term and Conditions of ALCI's Events - ALCI

So even if they were not aware of JE's comment about sexual gratification, they deliberately invited him as a promoter of 'human milk feeding individuals'.

The hotel were very wise to decide that having talk about men chestfeeding was controversial enough, but if he is on record as having associated that activity with sex, that would be a PR disaster for them.

When they talk about chestfeeding by men isn't it more likely that this refers to women who identify as men?

I had a good look at the ALCI website. Someone is very busy on there. No longer are the two posters for the conference visible. Nor is there a link to purchasing entry tickets. Ardilaun Hotel Galway not mentioned. I highly suspect the hotel has been contacted, that’s the way these things work in Ireland. It’s a small family hotel, well known in Galway, and yes I’ve been there and will be actually in Galway the week after the conference. (I live on the continent).

The membership is clearly 100% women. The listed professionals are all women, I’ve only a doubt about one named individual that doesn’t have a photo. Photos from prior conferences are 99.9% women. Breastfeeding professionals. The .01% is a male presenter from the conference 2 years ago. Plus a picture of a couple with a pregnant woman.

What strikes me is how strong is the word Lactation, rather than Breast-feeding. Also striking is the avoidance of the word Woman. I’m beyond wondering is it an error, or my heightened senses, because I’m certain it’s deliberate.

The link for board members is missing.

I wonder whether by using the word 'lactation', he has the (not very) plausible deniability that when he talks about sexual gratification and kink, of course hes not talking about involving babies being fed, purely the act of producing and secreting 'milk'.

Yeah, right.

On another note, I dont understand the disapproval of donor breast milk upthread by a PP. Some tiny prem babies, including my own, cannot tolerate formula - their tiny unformed bodies cannot process it. If i hadn't been able to express I dread to think what would have happened because our hospital didn't have a milk bank facility. They can literally be life saving.

Lifestyle questionnaires for donors and screening the milk, just like they do for blood donations ensures its as safe as possible. Its no different to donor blood! If you accept the concept of lifesaving blood donations, why not milk?

No Mother is using donor milk just because she 'prefers' it to formula - that's a horribly ignorant thing to say and implies its an unnecessary lifestyle choice.

News of the breastfeeding conference might help Ireland to realise that something needs to be done about the madness. It's not a side issue. The obvious safeguarding implications might help wake people and politicians up. The cruelty to women and invasion of their space is very clear when you are talking about breastfeeding a child.

Breastfeeding counsellor SACKED as 'mother' deemed 'hate speech'

An Aussie mum has been sacked as a breastfeeding counsellor because she used the word ‘mother’ rather than the gender-neutral term ‘parent’. The term ‘mother’ is being categorised as “hate speech” by the Breastfeeding Association- of which Jasmine Suss...

What I find astounding is that this man has been so successful. Welcomed onto a podcast by lesbian mothers. Works as a nanny. Works in early years/nursery setting. Worked, according to his own account, as a receptionist/admin in a lactation service and from there kind of 'accidentally' became a consultant.

In his role as a baby person, he talks about how he loves babies, was drawn to work with babies, etc. But doesn't want to be a parent, doesn't want to be a medic, just wanted a job he could work with babies.

Conversely there is his 'kink' and 'gender' stuff. The fetish stuff.

And the massive and undeniable problem is that a normal person would keep those two fields completely apart from each other. But he has brought them together.

But can't they see how harmful it is to normalise 'lacation kinks'. Regardless of what they say, inclusion of this man in a main stream conference does endorse everything he does.

'I was a fancy wine and cheese guy at a grocery store, which I love was great, but I knew that it wasn't what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
So I figured out what my ideal job would be,then figured out the word for that job. The word that I came up with was postpartum doula.
I did a doula training. I met some people. I googled Atlanta doulas, and then I had coffee with a dozen different people.
So I did a postpartum doula training. I made friends with some people.
I ended up doing a birth doula training and attended a birth. I realized that being a doula is not really what I wanted to do because that is more taking care of parents. It's more parent care and less infant care.
But Atlanta has this huge birth worker and lactation community, which is great,
and a lot of people were really supportive. So I got a job as the secretary at a clinic called Breastfeed Atlanta, where my entire job was schedule consultations, organize breast pump rentals and file insurance claims, and
after about six months, the owner was like, Jacob, you should just become an I-B-C-L-C.
You're really into the work, even if you decide you don't want to be a lactation consultant for the rest of your life, but it'll only ever look good on a resume that you were an I-B-C-L-C for a while, even if you let it lapse. No.
Yeah, it's never going to be a hindrance, and I didn't realize at the time,
but for most people, the hard part is getting your clinical hours.
I already worked at a clinic, so I was like, yeah, okay, that seems like a good idea'

Another interesting section here, where he claims that mothers who say they are exclusively breastfeeding 'are lying'.

'....it's funny you say that because every mom I'm friends with their baby is exclusively breasted.
And I was like, no, they're lying to you. They don't want to lose face because there's shame surrounding it.
You are all just lying to each other. And if one of you would own up and say at some point my baby had some formula and it wasn't the end of the world, you would all be better off for it.'

How interesting. Why would he say this? Cast mothers as liars?

The whole world is full of red tape, notices, warnings, restrictions, need to wait months for vetting reports etc...yet someone with a planet-sized ego and energy and will can steamroller through civic guardrails to get to a point where he's invited as an expert to a purely female-only activity, as someone who's not even advising women.
We can't walk out of our front door and get thru a day at work without feeling rules and regulations on our shoulders.
Yet a man proudly into kink and male sexual entitlement, a red flag in so many ways, somehow skips into this conference unencumbered.
Of course, when fantasy hits the ice cold air of reality, and the hotel is informed of his comments, then logic and common sense return, and the dream is over for him.
If it wasn't for those complaining, a person suggesting pedophile pleasure for men against babies would still have kept his invite, even with his bold as brass comments in the public domain.

I don't know how breastmilk can be screened but I will read more about it.

Can you please stop. In the neonatal I was in I breast-fed and expressed. The nurses gave me the small bottles to do so. I’d hand them over and the nurses named them and dated them, using excess for the other babies. No I wasn’t tested for diseases etc. Don’t overthink it. It’s a simple matter of trust, the nurses knew I and every other parent were there trying to do our best for our children. Throwing away such milk would have been outrageous as it was so beneficial to the tiny babies. The first time I breastfed they supervised me to make sure I got it right, after that I did it in a private room, and my husband was often with me. They got him to change our babies nappy the first time in the incubator. In the room he too could hold our baby, as human contact is so important. Those nurses would never let anyone harm a baby. Their dedication was outstanding.

This man seems to have Main Character Syndrome in a massive way, at the very least (I won't go into the very worst). Just speaking for myself, I wouldn't touch this man, his social circles, or anyone he worked for or advocated for with a ten-foot pole! I wouldn't hire him, ask him to speak at a conference, or let any of my family members near him.

Even if all he was doing was talking about himself to the exclusion of everything else in the universe. And certainly not knowing what else he thinks is "acceptable."

He seems contemptible to me. I won't say what else he seems to be.

The Irish website has now deleted the list of their breastfeeding experts. Massive cleanup of their website. Links broken etc. Presumably the experts contacted the ACLI and demanded their names be removed. It had photos, phone numbers and locations.

I wonder were some of them contacted for comment by the media.

When they talk about chestfeeding by men isn't it more likely that this refers to women who identify as men?

I don't think so - the whole 'chestfeeding' thing seems to involve having to artificially induce 'lactation', and I think it fits squarely with transIDing men appropriating women's biological functions, e.g. allegedly haveing periods, and going through the menopause.

The number of transIDing women who want to breastfeed must be vanishingly small.

Not that there are millions of transIDing MEN who want to breastfeed either, but they make a lot of noise about it as if it was a human right they were entitled to..
