Transitioning or therapy as the treatment for gender dysphoria

Most trans rights activists will tell you that all who claim to have gender dysphoria are valid in their feelings and the best treatment for gender dysphoria is always transitioning--both socially (e.g. pronouns, clothing) and medically (e.g. hormone therapy, mastectomy). These transitions should be accepted by society.

As far as I can tell, the typical gender-critical view is that while gender dysphoria may be a genuine condition, in all cases therapy or some such is a much preferred treatment to transitioning. Accepting transitioning is seen as requiring society to affirm certain falsehoods and harming women's interests. Am I right about this though? What are your thoughts?

Personally, I think the truth is slightly more moderate: gender dysphoria is a real condition, but should only be treated with transitioning in some cases--transitions which society should accept (but not be forced to do so). It depends on whether the cause is neurological and unchangeable (a sort of brain-body mismatch) or social and able to be treated with therapy (in my opinion).

Apologies if this is worded poorly and doesn't make sense.

On psychiatric needs and gender reassignment:

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/apa.70533

Conclusion
Severe psychiatric morbidity is common among gender-referred adolescents and appears to be more prevalent in those referred after the recent surge in referrals. Psychiatric needs do not subside after medical gender reassignment.

Summary
Gender-referred adolescents show high psychiatric morbidity, yet gender differences and mental health trajectories after medical gender reassignment remain poorly understood.
These adolescents had markedly higher psychiatric morbidity than controls before and after referral, with treatment needs often persisting and even intensifying after medical interventions—on some, they might even have a negative impact.
Findings emphasise the need for thorough psychiatric assessment and ongoing treatment throughout medical gender reassignment.

Cornwall, normal community. Nasty girls said it to another girl. Mean girls use all weapons at their disposal. It happened and I don't care if you don't believe me.

I have a child who was told stuff like this just before Covid. That because my child had an interest in something, they must be the opposite sex. It was very unsettling for them and it happened more than once. Luckily, I was able to point out that I did things that some people considered was not ‘what women’ do and I was no less female for doing so.

It happens still I believe from listening to parents with younger children. Peer criticism in these cases can be distressing and that is if your child even tells you what is being said to them.

Yes, sometimes it simply offers a special, unique and quirky 'identity' which has currency in the individual's social circle.

And then the social group move on and stop paying attention to it… so they either let it fizzle out or they find something else to be quirky about

other times… attention seeking; bored; too much time on SM

Not so new to Mumsnet as it turns out. The OP previously engaged in FWR four months ago by starting a similar thread. In that thread they mention having trans identifying sister (FtM).

Thank you.
My apologies OP for misrepresenting you.

This is one of the HUGE downsides to social media! It can make ridiculous, extreme, or harmful ideas seem sensible by distorting social norms, rewarding outrage, and creating isolated echo chambers.

As evidenced by some posters on this thread sadly… sucked into hours upon hours of SM

Culture assigns gender by translating biological sex into social roles, rules, and expectations. Societies use birth markers, behaviour codes, rituals, and language to teach people how to act like a specific gender which is a separate issue to gender self identification.

If its a separate issue, why bring it up?

We're all born a sex, some spaces are segregated by sex.

There are patterns of behaviour loosely or strongly based on sex. Not performing these patterns does not make someone the opposite sex.

Some men want to be seen as women and use the incorrect single sex spaces.

These men cant control how others see them, and cannot use women spaces because once they do, the spaces are no longer single sex and are no longer fit for purpose.

If a man want to conceal his sex and use surgery and drugs to do so, hes still male. He knows hes male, most people will identify him as male.

Is surgery or drugs a good treatment for gender identity? Probably not if the individual expects to be the opposite sex, use facilities of the opposite sex and be seen as the opposite sex.

So what. Kids say horrible things and meaningless pointless things to other kids all the time. I means nothing. You smell, you have ratty hair, you're spotty, you're fat, you've got no friends, you live in a poor house, I hate you, no one wants to be your friend.

They'll pick any old thing if they want to be nasty. What a good parent does is counter that and encourage resilience.

Trousers is such a stupid thing. I dont think I ever wore a skirt out of school and I dont own dresses or skirts now.

All the other kids would have been “what are you on about…. As if boys only wear trousers 😆 “

I know that, you know that, but it was said to my friend's daughter at junior school. She's now 14.

This, this this this this. And this.

It is a MH condition in the same way as any body dysmorphia. In fact this is about the body, it is body dysmorphia. The use of the term gender dysphoria has been made up to match the theory which as you say is predicated on thin air.

We dont treat anorexics by agreeing with them that they're fat and need weight loss surgery.

Concepts of 'gender dysphoria' are a relatively recently invented framework with which to view and then label an individual's feelings of distress and discomfort about themselves and their place in the world. 'Transitioning' is also part of this ideological construction and is presented as the solution to 'gender dysphoria'.

Concepts of 'Gender' - as distinct to 'Sex' - are social/cultural in origin and many people would suggest that 'gender' is just a synonym for personality or character ( regardless of whether an individual is broadly gender conforming or non conforming).

Gender ideology posits that if one does not conform to the gender roles or characteristics of one's sex then it is posssible that one has a neurological mis-match between mind and body - resulting in 'gender dysphoria' , and that one's inner soul could somehow be more typical of the opposite sex, and that transitioning to that sex ( not possible), or to that set of stereotypes/presentations could be a solution to one's dysphoric feelings.

This is all predicated on nothing but thin air and post modernistic ideas about the self that have arisen out of 'Queer Theory'. If one wants to present in ways considered typical of the opposite sex then go ahead ( adhering to the the same sorts of social limits that we must all adhere to around occasion and appropriateness) if that makes you feel better and more comfortable in yourself, but it is a naive and false expectation that the world must validate your feelings and change its normal sets of rules and boundaries to accommodate them. The world does not revolve around an individual's feelings.

This girl would have been surrounded by other girls and women wearing trousers. Baby girls wear trousers!

I know. This is only realistic if… say…. 1950s

Imagine that said to the wrong girl. A girl who already doesn't fit in with the other girls, who is struggling. Not hard to see a seed of doubt being sown, is it?

It does seem as though people live in different social groups some of which may be very tolerant of variety and others which are very intolerant

I have seen both but if you haven’t you could be forgiven for thinking all is good in the garden ( and especially the school playground ) . it’s naive

Can you clarify what made you snap out of thinking you were a boy??

Yes, of course they do. And other girls did and do. This was said to one specific girl out of unkindness. Since young girls can't be mean.

This girl sounds less mean and more living in cloud cuckoo land

Kudos to the OP. This is the first new to Mumsnet poster in a while who's arrived promoting the idea of men in women' spaces (er, well, some of them based on some undefinable notions) who's so far nor descended into the usual "sorry you're unable to understand /comprehend my intellectually superior word salad posts".

That's quite an achievement given the track record for new posters. 😁

And of course has enabled some genuinely powerful and intelligent responses.
