The Welsh Gender Service (WGS): a "potential Service of Concern"

BridgetYourFortyDaysAreUp · 21/08/2026 16:12

Meanwhile, a bit of news from Wales: Another piece of reporting from Nick Wallis' GenderBlog from 19 August 2026:

Welsh gender clinic “potential Service of Concern” – GenderBlog

The Welsh Gender Service (WGS) has been described as a “potential Service of Concern” in an internal NHS document published online. A Service of Concern is a formal NHS designation, meaning there has been “significant singular service failures, or cumulative or systemic concerns regarding a service or setting”.
^^
The WGS, based in Cardiff, is the only clinic in Wales allowed to refer NHS patients for genital surgeries and mastectomies. In May, GenderBlog revealed that the WGS was referring adult patients for genital surgeries and mastectomies at three to four times the rate per head of population than other UK clinics. If the Service of Concern process establishes there is “a clear and significant risk to patient safety”, the WGS will go into special measures.

.…………

In the meantime, WGS will continue to receive referrals. (I surmise, just in case they are not put into special measures.)

NHSE is exploring options to increase capacity;

I thought I'd read that NHS England was being scrapped. Or maybe I misread?

It is, but hasn't yet and it's functions are being transferred to the Department of Health and Social Care.

There's an article in the Times today but annoyingly the share link isn't working, I'll try again later but here it is if anyone else can get a share token to work

Dr Kate Nambiar is a TIM
Kate founded Clinic-T, a sexual health and contraception clinic led by and for trans and non-binary people in Brighton, in partnership with the Terrence Higgins Trust.
So an even worse activist than the last one, nothing to worry about there then.

Nambiar was already a 'gender clinician' at WGS, so they are just swapping roles by the looks of it. I wonder if Nambiar was at the Cardiff event where Quinney knocked the phone out of the videographer's hand?

Dr Sophie Quinney is still listed as Clinical Director on the service website? https://gender.wales/about-wgs/

I just checked because it seemed wild that the service suspension was made public around 5pm on a Friday. That timing seems like a corporate HR move, and so I wondered whether they had staff to deal with before it could be released!

Nick's article says:
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board told me her replacement is Dr Kate Nambiar and “Dr Quinney continues to work within the Welsh Gender Service in her substantive clinical role as a Gender Clinician.”

So it sounds like he got the info straight from the snake's horse's mouth.

WGS is still providing Hormones, endocrine reviews and dodgy psychological support.

So lots more to sort out.

Also says:

"Masculinising Gender Surgery: NHSE has advised that New Victoria Hospital, which provides the majority of masculinising gender surgeries in England, will cease delivering this service from November 2026. Chelsea and Westminster Hospital is currently the only alternative provider, with limited capacity. NHSE is exploring options to increase capacity; however, further delays are anticipated, with a disproportionate impact on Welsh patients due to higher waiting list
numbers. This has been communicated to Gender Identity Services across the UK and to patient groups."

I assume that's so called "bottom surgery".

I need mental health support as the parent of a young adult who's started down the medicalised route (hormones since January but we only found out recently). I thoroughly hate the NHS currently and the evil they're inflicting on mainly neurodivergent young people.

I'm sorry that you are also going through this. We have been through this, as a wider family, except it's not just been drugs, but also surgery. It's become a fault line in our family, because we don't all agree that it was the right thing for my niece, so now we just don't talk about it anymore. I could probably use some therapy myself!

She is an adult now (had surgery as a young adult) and has to now live with the consequences. I can tell you, at least for her, it has improved her mental health not one iota. It doesn't solve the suicidal thoughts either. What a waste of a perfectly healthy body.

I hope your child's mental health can be improved with therapy and time, and that these surgery clinics will be shut down before your child reaches that stage.

TRAs taking it well I see...

I've seen lots of posts calling for "direct action" and how they need to start behaving like suffragettes. Combined with posts naming the people supposedly behind this decision it paints kind of a scary picture.

I do agree with the stay on surgeries and hope that it becomes nationwide. It's strange to me that cosmetic surgery is funded by the NHS. Its the cognitive dissonance again of having to accept the two opposite statement "of COURSE women can have a penis, it's a normal body type for a woman" and "of COURSE penis removal must be available on the NHS, no woman should be expected to have a penis". And also the dichotomy between how hard women have to fight to get a breast reduction even if the size of their breasts causes pain and a significant impact on their lives but say you're trans and you want them gone totally and it's just a case of waiting your turn.

Thanks for the link, there was a comment that was alarming

"The WGS expanded to a satellite clinic in North Wales and increased their staffing levels over the past 4 years. It would be interesting to see the transfers from English patients from English GP surgeries to Welsh GP practices..."

I wonder if this is true, and if so does this clinic come under the C&V Health Board as well. How many of the referrals are from Welsh patients and how many are because of 'trans tourism'.

This is huge. Nick Wallis and all the groups and individuals who tried to stop this for the last few years have really achieved something.

This scandal could have impact on dodgy practices in the new gender clinics in England. Could impact on the puberty blocker trial.

Going to have impact on Plaid and Welsh Labour.

Sunlight wrecks these lies sooner or later.

So long as she investigated thoroughly, they can't swerve this, she was in charge during the time when there was a disproportionate number of patients referred. The ones in Tavistock got away with the damage they did, this one can't.

The activist Dr Sophie Quinney is no longer Clinical Director at the Welsh Gender Service. She still works there, but the NHS declined to renew her contract as Clinical Director in April, shortly after she was filmed grabbing a videographer’s phone out of his hand at a trans activist rally. There is no evidence this is anything more than a coincidence.

Demoted but not fired, sadly.

Thank you all for the updates. Let's hope this is the beginning of the end for NHS-supported surgeries for adults (just my opinion). If there are adults who cannot deal with themselves as they are, I have no problem with the NHS providing mental health support, as they do for everyone (such as it is, with waiting lists and such, admittedly). But, I would draw the line at taxpayer-funded body modification which somehow purports to improve mental health by going along with a delusion that humans can somehow change sex.

Adults can save their money and pay for it themselves.

Thanks for the update, lets hope the person in charge has been suspended without pay as well. How many has she sent down the conveyor belt to mutilation and sterilisation. 🤬

Cardiff and Vale Health Board have now confirmed an independent clinical review of the WGS and an immediate pause on all surgeries.

For those who are looking for confirmation that surgeries were cancelled, these two were both posted yesterday in a Transgender group I'm in.

Wow, Nick Wallis you did it, you got them to stop the referrals, the power of the press. Whoo hoo hoo 🥳

If it's true of course.

Plus the Conservatives and Reform MS's raising questions in the Senedd and putting the situation under the spotlight probably helped.

Welsh Gender Service Review - operations being cancelled as of today 28/08/2026 apparently?
