UK radical feminists; what to do?

So there was a question earlier today in one of my groups about TERFs in the UK, why are they so strong there, etc. Let me elaborate on something.

There is something special in mainstream British feminism that is quite different from European feminism(s), but since the English speaking internet concerns mostly the Anglosphere and not Europe, due to us having separate, isolated debates in each country/language, you won't likely ever hear how the UK is substantially different.
It is important to understand the logic of British feminism. Unlike European feminism, which is mostly inclusive and focused on stuff like equal pay, care, safe design of public space and general equity, in the UK it was always about "separate but equal".

British centres of power were always men-only, and many British feminists didn't react the way European women did (aka pushed their way into male spaces, so that these became co-ed spaces), but created their own, separate spaces, which they then aggressively policed the same way British men did with theirs. Add some Victorian prudishness and bioessentialism, that was abandoned in Europe after WWII for obvious reasons, but not in the UK, and voilà, here come British second-wave radfems and the TERFs.

I am from the Czech Republic where I currently live; I lived in Norway, Poland and the Netherlands, I speak fluently multiple European languages and understand few others; I don't say that to brag, but to show my ability to do the comparative analysis, since I study the topic closely.

Out of EU member states, only in Bulgaria and Hungary are trans rights worse than in the UK at the moment, with Hungary being expected to get substantially better soon, and in neither of those two countries are trans people, and especially trans women, as demonised as in the UK.

In all EU member states transphobia comes exclusively from far right places; it is unheard of that liberals or anyone non-far right would say what is absolutely the mainstream in the UK, including Hungary and Bulgaria.
If you are saying the stuff JKR is saying, you are 100 % aligned with far right politics.

We had an attempt by a group of our far right senators to enact a bill proposal similar to what is in the UK, but the proposal was killed within a week before it could have been even voted upon in the Chamber of Deputies. Just for instance.
Scandinavian feminism is focused mostly on fair share of care and chores, German feminism focuses mostly on equal pay, Kita for everyone and the like, Polish feminism is mostly about access to abortion, Czech feminism is mostly about equal pay and safety from domestic violence - I could go on, but all in all, men are welcome to participate and the goal is to create equity for everyone, regardless of their gender. Together.
We don't get British obsession with separate spaces for women, women here are absolutely fine with the way things are, mostly because cultures in the Continent are far less prudish and overall we treat men and women as one people rather than different species.

Moreover, because of civil law rather than common law, we have different approach to legal texts and their interpretations; this makes it different too.
Not just regarding trans rights, but also regarding women's rights, I am often amazed by how much backward the UK is in so many ways compared to the EU (again, including places like Hungary, this needs to be stressed). I often see women in English-speaking debates saying things like "ugh, men" on things that actually concern problems that are specifically British and that stem mostly from both societies' tendency to separate already boys from girls, treating them differently and sexualising women in contexts we don't really see as sexual at all.

We can't really get this across the Channel, because we just don't have the power to do so. For instance Czech debate on feminism is quite isolated; it's interesting, but no more than 15 million people would ever be able to participate in it (CZ/SK) due to the language barrier, the same goes for Scandinavia (17 million), Benelux (28 million), Poland (38 million), or even DACH (95 million). It is nothing compared to half a billion people of the US, UK, CA, AU, NZ and IE that are giving tone to the worldwide debate in English.

So, if you are a British trans woman, you would do yourself a great favour if you moved to mainland Europe. You will be welcomed and cherished (for the most part).

Why would you "cherish" any individual for some attriibute wholly unrelated to their quality as a human being? Trans people are just people. They're not demigods or some sacred caste. Some are nice are some are nasty. Do you genuinely believe the trans status of an individual excuses their moral failings or character flaws? What about mean-spirited, narcissistic, dishonest, selfish, greedy, disloyal transwomen? Would you"cherish" them too? Just because they're trans?

It might help if you are able to follow the thread (which doesn’t seem possible) before making irrelevant random out of context allegations. If you did you would know the context here was the inconsistency in demanding single sex spaces in toilets due to male violence but not elsewhere where sexual violence is more common. You demanded proof of this which you were provided with & now are pivoting elsewhere to avoid acknowledging your ignorance or hypocrisy not sure which but given your bad faith actions I'm going with hypocrisy.

And I'm not going trawl thru threads because I don't believe for one second prove Amnesty's policy of single sex spaces in toilets as you have repeatedly misrepresented facts & as such would be a waste of my time. That you can't quote them here proves this.

Whether or not single sex toilets are 'safe' (I would argue that at the very least they make voyeruism and indecent exposure less likely) the rational for single sex toilets is not male violence.

This is the legislation.

Equality Act 2010:

Single sex services are permitted where:

  • only people of that sex require it;
  • there is joint provision for both sexes but that is not sufficient on its own;
  • if the service were provided for men and women jointly, it would not be as effective and it is not reasonably practicable to provide separate services for each sex;
  • they are provided in a hospital or other place where users need special attention (or in parts of such an establishment);
  • they may be used by more than one person and a woman might object to the presence of a man (or vice versa); or
  • they may involve physical contact between a user and someone else and that other person may reasonably object if the user is of the opposite sex.

It's clear that some of the language was taken from the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, which sets out the reasons why men may have single sex services:

Sex Discriminaton Act 1975

35Further exceptions from ss. 29(1) and 30
(1) A person who provides at any place facilities or services restricted to men does not for that reason contravene section 29(1) if—

(a)the place is, or is part of, a hospital, reception centre provided by the Supplementary Benefits Commission or other establishment for persons requiring special care, supervision or attention, or

(b)the place is (permanently or for the time being) occupied or used for the purposes of an organised religion, and the facilities or services are restricted to men so as to comply with the doctrines of that religion or avoid offending the religious susceptibilities of a significant number of its followers, or

(c)the facilities or services are provided for, or are likely to be used by, two or more persons at the same time, and

(i)the facilities or services are such, or those persons are such, that male users are likely to suffer serious embarrassment at the presence of a woman, or
(ii)the facilities or services are such that a user is likely to be in a state of undress and a male user might reasonably object to the presence of a female user.

(2)A person who provides facilities or services restricted to men does not for that reason contravene section 29(1) if the services or facilities are such that physical contact between the user and any other person is likely, and that other person might reasonably object if the user were a woman.

You might think that is all terribly prudish and that all services should be mixed sex, but you cannot have a mixed sex single sex service.

You gave me details about REFUGEE CAMPS toilets in third world countries pertaining to males & females not trans people in first world countries.

The bad faith desperation is breathtaking.

But as one our regular posters says, anyone with a hidden disability who needs the facilities of an accessible toilet is “outed” as having a special need when they use that toilet. Why is that any different?

I wouldn’t think to comment if any colleague used the disabled loo. If I was asked about it I’d think that they must have a requirement that’s none of my business and think no more about it.

It does the whole “just want to pee” nonsense up for what it is.

Well I doubt if all colostomy bag wearers are happy about it either but in their case it's physically unavoidable.

Keeptoiletssafe · 03/08/2026 09:27

What I would like to see is more accessibility in single sex design. ‘Ambulant’ designs are good.

(Plus toilets for non-ambulant people within the single sex accommodation).

WrongKindOfFeminist · 03/08/2026 09:25

'suspicion you are disabled' - maybe it's a good time to have a bit of awareness and education about disability. It's not about a loo being 'bigger', it's about accessibility.

WrongKindOfFeminist · 03/08/2026 09:24

Imdunfer · 03/08/2026 08:46

You got a men's loo, a ladies loo and a gender neutral loo that was previously the disabled, which is how most employers will frig it.

You look pretty much female and nobody has any suspicion that you are disabled in any way that needs you to use a bigger loo. You head off to the loo and a female colleague follows you, expecting to go into the same loos. You peel off to the disabled.

If there were no sexed loos there wouldn't be an issue, but yes I can see how this is considered outing by people who have been completely accepted should be treated as female at work.

How does having a disability mean one is one sex or the other?

You can tell I am a woman because I am cutting up pear.

Still waiting for your data proving your claim there's more sexual violence in public toilets than workplace/schools/universities.

Still waiting from any data from you. Can you find any data on toilets? Why does it matter if there’s more sexual violence in schools than in a shop toilet? Or a university than a pub? I suppose I could send ages working it out but why? How much violence is enough for you to change your mind on public toilets? What is a public toilet? Not many of us use the traditional council-run public toilet you may be implying is a ‘public toilet’ since there’s only 1 per 15,000 people at a rough estimate in this country. We used to have so many more but they get closed down because of misuse (sex, drugs, vandalism) and the cost becomes too much keeping them in order. In this country councils don’t have a duty to provide public toilets. The true answer of incidents will never be correct as much is kept hidden - a fact you may have discovered. No venue is going to advertise what’s gone on in their toilets.

Also be mindful I am not going to start sharing the exact details on sexual violence from some random man in Australia. I note you aren’t so interested in deaths or hygiene (cleaning and ventilation) which are other reasons why single sex designs are advantageous.

If you have looked you will find it is extremely difficult to assess toilet safety. I can tell you who categorises assaults by location. British Transport Police. But only in station toilets (not in carriages) and then it doesn’t state what design each toilet is. Unhelpfully they list victims of assault by sex but perpetrators by gender. It can be worked out to a certain extent by crime code. They also list deaths in toilets. No murders in 10 years of data. Now that level of detail may seem unimportant but given everything that goes on in toilets it means when there are cries from Victoria McCloud saying about leaving the country and people are going to get murdered in toilets, there isn’t any evidence to suggest they are. There is a death in station toilets around one every five or six months on average. No data on how many people were saved from death by designs. We need designs so that these deaths within toilets can be prevented as much as possible.

…and that Amnesty has a women's single sex space policy….but I won't hold my breath given your track record.

No need to hold your breath. Look at my quotes from Amnesty on the Amnesty Thread. Plan International and WaterAid have similar initiatives of building girls and women’s toilets.

The disabled has been called Accessible for several years because of campaigning from various groups with ambulant conditions that mean accessible toilet design is better for their needs.

Various features try and mitigate the fact they are mixed sex and private. Radar keys, alarm pulls, opening out on to a visible circulation space.

nicepotoftea · 03/08/2026 09:06

You could also be outed, for instance, by not becoming the Earl of Grantham.

The GRA made it clear that there is no right to privacy where sex is relevant in law, (even in situations where we might think it should be irrelevant).

If it is legal to segregate a service by sex, then sex is relevant.

The only relevant argument is whether it should be segregated.

Making up laws and rights will not get anyone anywhere.

we can see who are men.

we never consented toto male incursions in to female spaces.

Now as the law has now been clarified so not only do we not have to put up with this in workplaces, it is, as a matter of law illegal to allow it.

That answer has no evidence, statistics or data on toilets. Your source has no mention of toilets or bathrooms. However, how you can read that document and think it doesn’t support my campaign is odd.

The link is specifically regarding areas where sexual violence have been identified as a major issue in Australia so public toilets clearly don't comparatively rate as you conceded yourself by stating most victims know their perpetrators.

Quite.

I suspect the answer is roughly that people wont grasp that the six foot four brick shithouse with a beard and size 11 feet actually has a delicate lady soul underneath.

He needs the women to 'validate' his inner desires.

Exactly.

It's so perfectly, bloody, blatantly, couldn't be clearer, see it from space, obvious, I don't know why they still bang on about it.

It's pathetic.

Grown adults pretending to be freaked out by being othered, when they're fucked off with not being pandered to.

i've said it before, these men who go out of their way to promote transgenderism really make you wonder how patriarchy ever got off the ground.

They're idiots.

It can only be due to muscle, none of it's to do with brains.

Can someone explain to me, once and for all, how a person is outed as the sex they are, by using a toilet that is frequented by both sexes?

Quite.

I suspect the answer is roughly that people wont grasp that the six foot four brick shithouse with a beard and size 11 feet actually has a delicate lady soul underneath.

He needs the women to 'validate' his inner desires.

We are not blind and deaf and gullible in the extreme.

That's debatable.

Only by idiots.
