Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

UK radical feminists; what to do?

So there was a question earlier today in one of my groups about TERFs in the UK, why are they so strong there, etc. Let me elaborate on something.

There is something special in mainstream British feminism that is quite different from European feminism(s), but since the English speaking internet concerns mostly the Anglosphere and not Europe, due to us having separate, isolated debates in each country/language, you won't likely ever hear how the UK is substantially different.
It is important to understand the logic of British feminism. Unlike European feminism, which is mostly inclusive and focused on stuff like equal pay, care, safe design of public space and general equity, in the UK it was always about "separate but equal".

British centres of power were always men-only, and many British feminists didn't react the way European women did (aka pushed their way into male spaces, so that these became co-ed spaces), but created their own, separate spaces, which they then aggressively policed the same way British men did with theirs. Add some Victorian prudishness and bioessentialism, that was abandoned in Europe after WWII for obvious reasons, but not in the UK, and voilà, here come British second-wave radfems and the TERFs.

I am from the Czech Republic where I currently live; I lived in Norway, Poland and the Netherlands, I speak fluently multiple European languages and understand few others; I don't say that to brag, but to show my ability to do the comparative analysis, since I study the topic closely.

Out of EU member states, only in Bulgaria and Hungary are trans rights worse than in the UK at the moment, with Hungary being expected to get substantially better soon, and in neither of those two countries are trans people, and especially trans women, as demonised as in the UK.

In all EU member states transphobia comes exclusively from far right places; it is unheard of that liberals or anyone non-far right would say what is absolutely the mainstream in the UK, including Hungary and Bulgaria.
If you are saying the stuff JKR is saying, you are 100 % aligned with far right politics.

We had an attempt by a group of our far right senators to enact a bill proposal similar to what is in the UK, but the proposal was killed within a week before it could have been even voted upon in the Chamber of Deputies. Just for instance.
Scandinavian feminism is focused mostly on fair share of care and chores, German feminism focuses mostly on equal pay, Kita for everyone and the like, Polish feminism is mostly about access to abortion, Czech feminism is mostly about equal pay and safety from domestic violence - I could go on, but all in all, men are welcome to participate and the goal is to create equity for everyone, regardless of their gender. Together.
We don't get British obsession with separate spaces for women, women here are absolutely fine with the way things are, mostly because cultures in the Continent are far less prudish and overall we treat men and women as one people rather than different species.

Moreover, because of civil law rather than common law, we have different approach to legal texts and their interpretations; this makes it different too.
Not just regarding trans rights, but also regarding women's rights, I am often amazed by how much backward the UK is in so many ways compared to the EU (again, including places like Hungary, this needs to be stressed). I often see women in English-speaking debates saying things like "ugh, men" on things that actually concern problems that are specifically British and that stem mostly from both societies' tendency to separate already boys from girls, treating them differently and sexualising women in contexts we don't really see as sexual at all.

We can't really get this across the Channel, because we just don't have the power to do so. For instance Czech debate on feminism is quite isolated; it's interesting, but no more than 15 million people would ever be able to participate in it (CZ/SK) due to the language barrier, the same goes for Scandinavia (17 million), Benelux (28 million), Poland (38 million), or even DACH (95 million). It is nothing compared to half a billion people of the US, UK, CA, AU, NZ and IE that are giving tone to the worldwide debate in English.

So, if you are a British trans woman, you would do yourself a great favour if you moved to mainland Europe. You will be welcomed and cherished (for the most part).

All women have the right to point out that our sex is being parodied by members of the opposite sex. It doesn’t matter what those women look like or how they dress. Men are not women and women have the right to object when it’s claimed that x stereotype makes them so. It’s insulting and any other group people would be up in arms about the misogyny and cultural appropriation.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2026 13:43

Yes, it’s odd that this poster clearly thinks that women who aren’t “feminine” are letting the side down somehow, which they’ve extrapolated from the fact that some women who have been clear that they don’t believe any men are women make fun of some particularly ludicrous attempts to ape a male gaze view of what women are.

Gretel346 · 03/08/2026 13:09

Some would say the same description is accurate of many GC thought leaders.

But of course that's somehow now suddenly 'offensive'.

Women don't have to pretend to be women.

(Do you know that most of your posts make absolutely no sense?)

Or Australia, or NZ.

Indeed, and in South America, where many of the figures come from, the risk factor isn't wearing a dress, but engaging in sex work. And I still reckon more women engaging in sex work are killed than men in dresses doing the same.

The point is habits die hard for some. Colonisation & imperialism isn't just limited to resource & land grabbing but invading the psychological space based on that old chestnut cultural supremacy.

Edited

Well, I actually agree with you that colonialism & imperialism - and appropriation - are not limited to land grabs.

I see male appropriation of women’s experience, existence & the language we need to talk about these things as colonisation & appropriation.

  • Performing woman-face while mansplaining to women what woman is as so many of these men do.
  • Appropriating the (alleged) “third gender” traditions of various very different cultures & marketing them as proof that noble savages apparently endorsed the very specific 20th century consumerist ideology of “gender identity:

That’s before we reach the racism of equating the struggle of men in dresses to strip off around unconsenting women & girls with the US civil rights movement; the direct lie that black women athletes are “targeted”, based on the racist trope that black women are more like men really; the rhetorical equation of “transphobia” with “racism”…

Shedmistress · 03/08/2026 13:24

Sounds like a very safe demographic to me. Maybe the safest of them all.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2026 13:23

And still hardly any men in dresses killed by other men in the UK.

Or in the whole of Europe.

Amnesty now think that Ruth Hunt is part of an anti-trans group, so it's true that the quality of their work has gone down hill recently.

Then some other nutter tried act as if refugee camps are no different from general living conditions in first world countries to which I explained camps vary in conditions.

I think you really need to rethink your use of 'first world', but leaving that aside, extreme poverty, homelessness and deprivation exist in the UK and across Europe.

I don't understand why you are so resistant to accepting that vulnerable women depend on provision that excludes men.

(But if you can identify some naice refugee camps, I'm sure Nigel Farage would be grateful for the tip.)

GC's don't really believe that for one second. That they specifically target trans women for their vicious mockery when expressing femininity says it all. If the only problem is sharing single sex spaces with the opposite sex why the need to demean TW's appearance if males expressing femininity isn't a problem? And don't give me that shit its only because it doesn't make them a woman. GC's tell on themselves EVERY TIME by their framing which exposes the underlying problem: FEMININITY. They reserve exactly the same ire for women who engage in it by asserting they have been 'brainwashed

It wasn't GC's who divided transwomen into dolls and bricks. That was the trans crowd's own idea. There is more suffering in trans spaces from you bullying each other and the fact you do zero safeguarding against predators than all so called trauma you claim is created by women having a laugh.

Yes some of us like laughing at gender absurdities. That is because it is very FUNNY. Yet it is black humour because we are laughing at slapstick on one hand and actual danger on another. It is something women learn to do from a young age to handle being harassed by twatty men. Men prefer it when women cry, but guess what we get to decide what we feel like doing.

Other women are very empathic towards the "suffering" that men in dresses experience. However men have long learned to weaponize that empathy. So laughter makes way more sense.

In response to women laughing what do the men in dresses do they threaten women with violence or carry it out.

Meanwhile other men beat up and kill the men in dresses. Because men think hurting each other is a great plan. What do the TAs do about that ?

Do we see the trans activists go and tell extreme Muslims/Christians off or challenge aggressive masculinity in any way?

Not really. Instead they reinforce it because they think any sensitive behaviour/liking dresses makes you a woman just like male trad thinkers do. They could be fighting for a more complex form of masculinity with space for all types of men. It would be safer for EVERYONE.

Look at the trans death website. You will struggle to find one death carried out by a woman. You find hundreds of men in dresses killed by other men. Yet you blame that awful behaviour on women. If all the feminists disappeared tomorrow men would still kill each other.

Men are afraid women will laugh at them. Women are afraid men will kill them.

Over and over.

There's no doubt that certain men become quite hyperbolic when they hear women saying no and start losing access to all those spaces where women and girls disrobe and toilet (not to mention sport and gaslighting the young).

Indeed. But it's consistent with more than one thing I've read on replies to left wing/liberal Substacks.
This genuine belief that those IDing as trans, specifically men as women (did anyone see a woman to man transexual back in the day?) were tacitly accepted for who they were even if some bigotry based on stereotypes.
Yes, all that acceptance for men in womenface/stockings/heels back in the day, on the whole taken for how they wanted.
And that had Murdoch to Musk, Trump to Farage not happened, the love would only have increased, women across the UK would have been fine with the first attempt at gender self ID, Sturgeon in Scotland, May and Mordaunt and their push for self ID would have been held up as feminist heroes, prisons, sports, refuges would have worked out policies for the new women to be embraced by the existing women, those new women looking hyper feminine in all situations impinging on existing women and children would have been totally cool.
Even the new chest feeders would be held up as new women really pitching in.
And existing women would pitch in to help them integrate. Those LaLeche classes would be oversubscribed.
Guess what, we could also have all.these red light areas with progressive British men visiting those third genders from developing countries, their progressive wives and GFs supporting such inclusion, plus all those mega brothels where existing women could meet some of their johns in the toilets as new women.
But instead, British GCs just shut the door to this. Bad, unprogressive, sexual racists, pining for the empire and Victoria's morals, marking down the beauty standards every new woman (as Gretel sees them) that they meet.
Before Gretel accuses me over gross oversimplification and exaggeration, pots and kettles re Gretel over generalizing and dumbing down British GCs as right wing stormtroopers, sexual racists, prudes

You seem to agree that women in refugee camps need single sex spaces to protect them from men. Why don't women not in camps deserve the same protection?

You gotta love (erm...) Gretel. Not only are GCs, specifically the British ones, colonial supremacist and effectively right wing inculcated culture warriors, injected with the toxin of Murdoch Dacre Trump Farage Musk, running narratives that are consistent with imperial aggression, and at the same time Victorian prudes, phobic with phalluses as Victorians were with the merest inch of flesh, piano and chair legs...and now rigorously enforcing beauty standards upon everyone.
Yep, this is all that's left after the enforced diktats that "men can become women, no debate" has been trashed, and cancel culture is over.
So, now that women after many years are speaking up, this is the new front, that GC British style is a Victorian sexusl hang up/British aggressive right wing colonial movement.
Completely not shared by any women in enlightened nations like France Portugal Spain Holland (definitely no empires here) and Germany (let's ignore two world wars) and Australia NZ Canada (absolutely treat their indigenous so progressively).

Didn't Stonewall include cross dressers under the trans umbrella until very recently?

nicepotoftea · 03/08/2026 13:02

Gretel346 · 03/08/2026 12:52

Yeah? Then why all the 'men in dresses' 'woman face' 'parody of women' 'cross dresser' insults that are routine on this forum & all major social media platforms?
Stop lying.

Oh but I was a fan of Bowie!!!

Lol.

I would never refer to 'a man in a dress', as I have never understood why that would be necessary to identify as a woman. It's the kind of thing that people say when they don't have a grasp of the issue.

'woman face' and 'parody of women' accurately refer to drag regardless of whether it's in a gay nightclub or part of a pantomime.

You seem to be confusing 'something somebody else once said on the internet' with a rational argument.
