Linehan tweeting misogyny and racism now

Seems to have completed his lurch to the far-right - in addition to his vocal support of Trump, I suppose his 'defender of women and girls' schtick doesn't really wash any more...

Those messages are disgusting.

https://www.stophateuk.org/about-hate-crime/transgender-hate/

The violence that transpeople face is also disgusting, and I think (a small minority of) GCs being glib about them is hurting perception.

For all the mocking people gave about someone likening a movement to a 'brand' earlier in the thread, a movement largely lives or dies by its perception, and I don't want to be part of any movement that is represented by Linehan. Rightly or wrongly, people see him as one of the main 'faces' of being gender critical, and to act like that isn't the case is just wilful denial.

There are zero actual details here and zero connection with any GC individuals.

GiddyGiddyGiddy · 20/07/2026 15:11

As a lot of the messages on this tread suggest, there are GC women who find Linehan odious and don't want to be represented by him. Similarly, there are transpeople (and even TRAs) who find the people posting that shit to be equally odious.

For all the arguing that Linehan is a bad actor who doesn't represent all GCs, there are posters on here who are happy to treat extreme TRAs as fully representative of all transpeople. Being Gender Critical is not a monolith, and I don't think it does anyone any favours to suggest that being a TRA is either.

I still don't understand the equivalence you see between Linehans' behaviour and that of the extreme TRA component.

What has he said or done that's on a similar level?

If you don't see that Linehan is a vindictive bully then you're just being wilfully ignorant, sorry.

Well then, all these reasonable TRAs need to speak up a bit louder then.
Because the majority of what we hear IS offensive, aggressive, and threatening. And would absolutely not fly if it was being directed at any other group sharing a protected characteristic.

Have you looked at any of those terf is a slur tweets??
Have a go at replacing the word TERF in those tweets with black, gay, disabled, Jewish, elderly people, Trans(!) even.

There are THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of them. They are the very loud, prevailing voices.

It's not hard to speak up as a community to condemn the actions of people who despite sharing views with, are damaging your community and making it harder for your community to be accepted and viewed as reasonable.

Plenty of groups concerned about the unsavoury actions of a few in their community regularly speak out to basically say "they dont speak for us"
Organisations like the MCB repeatedly issue statements condemning all forms of mindless violence, stressing that extremists do not speak for Islam.
There were very loud, very strong Sikh voices expressing their horror at the HN murder.
The EVAWG coalition recently did that last year, after being horrified at some anti migrant groups hijacking their cause.
Good people tend to distance themselves from the lunatics among them.

So where are they? Where are all the voices saying "Not in my name?"
I sure as shit would not want to be lumped in with maniacs ranting about torturing a group of people I dont agree with.

Yes, but my point is the refusal of many GC people to even acknowledge the issues that transpeople face.

When JKR wrote that first essay, she made mention of the fact that she would march with transpeople if they were discriminated against; in the last two years, has she done that even once? Has she made any comment about violence against transpeople? I agree she's not obligated to, but not doing so is certainly inconsistent with what she previously wrote.

I'm proud that none of that violence has any connection with GC people; I'm firmly against self-ID and support single-sex spaces, but I'm not going to pretend there isn't any nuance to the matter; for instance, if a transwoman has fully medically transitioned, she is going to be at risk in the men's toilets. Does that mean there should be a third space? How would that be implemented? Or is there a level of medical transition that should entitle a transwoman to use women's toilets?

And people DO condem GL on here. Regularly.
We've all got eyes. Hes clearly lost the plot. I agree with him on ONE thing.
And many, many women on here have openly and repeatedly said hes doing us no favours with his erratic and sometimes offensive tweets.
But to say they are even in the same fucking universe as the type of tweets, signage, and behaviour we see regularly from TRAs is patently absurd.

murasaki · 20/07/2026 15:24

No, there is no level of cosmetic surgery that should allow a man to access female single sex spaces.

Apparently you're not supposed to differentiate between those who have had surgery and those that haven't in terms of their transness. So I don't.

I'm saying this genuinely, and I really don't want it to be taken in bad faith, but... The majority of TRAs do speak against this, and aren't this extreme. But, since GC people aren't likely to visit TRA spaces, when are they going to see that?

Social media has atomised arguments such that the reasonable voices on either side aren't the ones that are going to be promoted. A lot of GC people on this site only get their information from here, and perhaps from Twitter.

Put it this way - and to illustrate that I'm not exempt from this problem - if I see a tweet from an extreme TRA issuing a death threat, I'm far more likely to share that than five other TRAs condemning that tweet.

I'm not claiming to have any solutions, but I think it's important to acknowledge a certain level of bias, whether deliberate or not.

Well as a woman, I feel that there has been a refusal from Transwomen to acknowledge the impact on women of having men in their single sex spaces.

Instead there has been belittling of women's point of view, intimidation, bullying, ignoring of their consent. It's been entirely about what Transwomen want and the shutting down of anyone who has a different point of view.

If a transwomen is at risk in a men's toilet, that's because of the behaviour of other men. Why has there been zero focus on tackling horrific behaviour from men and all the focus on getting women to sort the problem out?

If the focus had been on third spaces to begin with, there would have been significant support for that, but the direction they have taken has made clear how deeply misogynistic this entire movement is at its heart.

And by the by, why would there be any argument for letting transitioned men into women's toilets? They are men. Having surgery doesn't change that.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 20/07/2026 15:31

GiddyGiddyGiddy · 20/07/2026 13:46

But this does bring up an interesting point; transpeople do face some discrimination - you'd have to be in completely in denial to ignore the fact that they face verbal harassment on the street and have to experience 'tranny' jokes. The threshold for their belligerence, though, seems to be a lot lower on here - they do have right to be annoyed & on their guard, even if the actions of TRAs go too far.

That's not to excuse TRAs, but I think there is a cycle going on there which isn't helpful to anyone - it's characteristic of social media bringing out the worst of people's impulses and flattening out nuance, and that includes JKR.

I checked your posting history and I will be honest, I am finding it very hard to believe you are the GC poster you claim to be. However, I am giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming you have name changed.

The reason I am finding it hard to believe is that anyone who has been following this from a GC position for any amount of time has seen this in the wild themselves.

It's not just a handful of cherry picked examples.

I'm pretty much classic woke. It's just this one thing where I'm a major outlier from my usual tribe, and most of the time I don't bring itup for obvious reasons. So I see what the nice, reasonable people on the Genderist side say.

I've been called a literal Nazi and told I do not deserve any consideration or respectful engagement with my position whatsoever simply for saying, in a hobby group I have been a member of for literally over a decade, that female people exist as well and that should be respected.

I've sat on the sidelines in a forum and watched reasonable, careful, considered posts being deleted wholesale and replaced with the narrative that "a bunch of hateful TERFS came and spread their poison but don't worry, we saw them off".

I mean - have you read JKR's statement and then compared it to how she gets described not just by the splintery rolling pin crowd but by everyday politically engaged left wing adults? They have absolutely no doubt that she literally wants to harm transpeople, that she has had some kind of middle aged breakdown.

It really, truly, 100% is not the same on both sides here.

I'm certainly not in favour of Self-ID, but trying to act as if there's any sort of simple solution is just burying your head in the sand. This is what I mean by the complete lack of nuance in the conversation. Too many prominent GC voices are completely willing to overlook the the dangers that transpeople do undeniably face.

Well men need to learn to accept that other men don't always look like them, and behave better. And that's not women's job to sort out.

And actually, how bad is the risk? Men would most likely be uncomfortable and leave, or maybe make a rude remark. Hardly threats of sexual assault with a splintery rolling pin.

I don't see why you think it's women's job to facilitate these men. It's men's, or theirs to argue for other spaces, which it would seem they don't want as there's no validation in that.

First of all, are they? What is the evidence?

Secondly, if that's true, where is the campaign to tackle this terrible behaviour from men?

Thirdly, if third spaces and needed, go for it. Most GC types have been advocating this for years (and been called bigots as a result)

But do not make male on male violence women's problem to solve. Do not attempt to shame and bully women who rightfully refuse to give up their rights to ameliorate the effects of male behaviour.

Meceme · 20/07/2026 15:39

The solution is third spaces. Individual gender neutral facilities and being able to trust that trans women (knowing they are biologically male) accept and use them.
Sadly, looking at the response by most vocal TRAs this does not seem to be happening.
I wonder why, if the extreme TRAs are such a amall part of the population?

Again, I want to speak gently because I'm in the same position as you, and have seen the same thing, and I do find it genuinely enraging. I think the way that GCs are treated is disgusting, and agree wholeheartedly with you that the treatment of Rowling is particularly unpleasant.

However (and this is why I really want to be clear that I'm speaking gently and just want to have a calm conversation about this), I have seen the same response from GCs towards reasonable transpeople. For instance, in the example of the medically-transitioned transwoman in the men's toilets; the responses immediately on this very thread have skirted around the central point and haven't offered an actual solution. The only two options seem to be A. The transwoman should just go in the Men's where he'll be in danger, or B. The transwoman just shouldn't exist.

@murasaki
"I don't see why you think it's women's job to facilitate these men. It's men's, or theirs to argue for other spaces, which it would seem they don't want as there's no validation in that."

I fully agree with you! But that's not something that's going to happen overnight, and I think an actual discussion on the subject should be wide-ranging enough to discuss its nuances. I certainly don't think it's a woman's responsibility to stop men from being misogynists, but we don't live in an ideal world where men will just magically decide not to be misogynists. And denying that transwomen do face some dangers is the first step to addressing those nuances.

@GiddyGiddyGiddy If transwomen face dangers in the male bathroom (and I remind you again, that you have provided no evidence for this).

Why are you more focused on women acknowledging this than actually addressing it with the males dishing it out?

murasaki · 20/07/2026 15:48

But the point is that we don't have to suggest the solutions. Women fought for their own spaces, transpeople can do the same. I think a lot of us would support that, but why should we drive it amd solve their problems, which they have chosen, for them?

Also, I don't think suggesting they go where the law says is in any way the same as threatening violence, as women wouldn't be commiting it, if indeed it were to happen.

It's also pretty misandrist to have such a low opinion of men.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/07/2026 15:50

Okay, but you see how this is exactly what I mean? That's disgusting, I agree, but the post was made by a single TRA, not some monolith of transpeople. I've seen GC people crowing about attacks on transpeople, and I know they're not representative of most GC people. But then TRAs share those and act like they're representative of all GC people. It's a cycle, and it doesn't do anyone any good

So much of this is just cherry-picking examples to get outraged over, and it's disingenuous to pretend that only one 'side' does this when it's just a symptom of social media that deliberately stokes rage and rewards bad impulses with more engagement.

As above - that's my point! It's important to tackle violence by men against transpeople, but whenever I bring it up, you reply telling me that transpeople are the real violent ones and we go around in a circle.

Simply having a discussion about something isn't 'making it women's problem to solve'. Do you see posts on here about Trump and reply 'Well, what do you want me to do about it?'?
