Full Council Chaos. Bristol City Council refusing to implement single sex services

Last night at the full council meeting women asking questions about BCC's refusal to implement the law was met with heckling from the gallery and a nonsensical word salad from council officials.

Somehow the number of questions, and goodness knows what other personal details, was leaked from within the Council offices and fed to far left activists who put out a call for attendance online. At least 100 turned up and abused and harrassed members of the public while they were speaking. At one point they were shouting at a questioners to sit down. No action was taken by council officials to maintain order.

As they left, women were met with heckling, chanting and shouting outside the building from more far left activists. The atmosphere was intimidating and abusive.

Please note, the Council agenda that evening held an item on a city wide commitment to ending VAWG. Harrassment and abuse was happening right in front of them and they not only initiated this spectacle but supported it.

Women are not safe in Bristol.

Well it happened once with a man so fairly balanced for me. The difference is no one is expecting me to strip off in an open changing room with men or just to walk through to find a cubicle and have to witness naked men but it seems like it's fine to expect me to do that with women.

That study was presumably talking about changing rooms where people use cubicles so not what I was talking about.

I don't actually care if it's data I care that I can change in a cubicle and the other people using the changing room also use cubicles.

I wonder what the stats are for the sort of changing facilities I detailed in a Victorian swimming pool? I bet the are so low as to not register.

What percentage of sexual assaults are ok in your book? I was actually more traumatised by the woman than the man so I think dismissing it is very unfair.

Has Bristol Council said it will install cubicles in all facilities?

Your unacceptable experience is very unusual. The majority of sex offending, around 98%, is perpetrated by men. The Sunday Times did a load of FOIs and proved that mixed-sex changing rooms are more dangerous for women, and it was sufficiently credible a study that the bastion of reaction right-wing thinking that is the... [rereads notes and looks puzzled]... Independent reported on it.

"A bad thing happened to me once" isn't data.

My local leisure centre has a mixed sex ‘changing village’ all cubicles, no communal/open plan changing spaces, there are 3 family rooms, 1 big ‘club ‘ room used for the swimming club and school swimming classes, then it’s just lockers and cubicles. The cubicles are open top with huge gaps at bottom and top, very very very easy to look under or over as evidenced many times while I’ve been there by teen boys climbing on the bench and ‘surprising’ the teenage girls in who are trying to get changed. It would be remarkably easy to poke a phone under or over the door and record unsuspecting women getting changed. The showers are the same, individual cubicles but open top with gaps at bottom and top.

This 👍
I coached at a swimming club and there wasn’t a week went by without men(young & old) trying to film the girls.

I just had a trans identified male show up on my social media feed doing a piece to camera.

He claimed to be from Trans Pride and pronounced he was attending the Bristol City meeting but ‘was not interested in a county council’s interpretation of the guidance, I’m interested in a legal interpretation of the guidance’.

So he’s interested in a legal interpretation on the guidance produced as an explanation of the law. I’m struggling to get my head around that!

I think most of the traction is around claims that the guidance is based on the EA2010 only and is in direct conflict with other laws.

Do Bristol Council want to use their budget to take that argument to court?

As a teenager I was sexually harassed by a naked woman in a changing room. Not an experience I want to repeat.

I think there are pros and cons to both options, but a lot of the time it just comes down to cubicles taking up more space.

Try reading my post again. You might not have seen the ‘show quote history’ link on quoted posts. It’s really helpful as it lets you check back on what people have actually said if you are not sure. You don’t even have to scroll back pages.

Here you go:

In fact you might find that a large open plan single sex space with a handful of cubicles is quicker to clean than 30 individual unisex cubicles

Sorry I don't want that. I've been to pools like that, always queues waiting for cubicles and to be honest I don't want to see naked bodies while I'm waiting. Enough cubicles for everyone.

CornishDaughteroftheDawn · 17/07/2026 15:56

TheignT · 17/07/2026 15:31

You referred to a large open-plan changing room. No thanks.

The claim was that unisex changing rooms are cheaper to run than single sex. This is often repeated but I’ve never seen any evidence that it’s true.

Most single sex changing rooms have a few cubicles available as well as a common changing area so everyone has a choice.

The risk of voyeurism and sexual assault is drastically reduced, it’s no more expensive, is more space efficient and you can have your cubicle (in the correct sex changing room obvs). The vast majority of people catered for. That’s a win win I’d say.

Pretty much all gyms and leisure centres now have locker rooms and showers on a single sex basis.
It works.

Does it? Quiet time you go off to an unstaffed changing room, back them the cubicles in view and hearing of lifeguard. I know where I felt safer at a quiet time.

MyThreeWords · 17/07/2026 11:34

Thanks Very much, @seethlaw . I'd read the start of those threads, and the utterly enraging news that Amnesty had published this nonsensical, tin-foil-hatted report. But I was so depressed by this that I hadn't clicked back to the threads to see the encouraging news about the backlash.

God, I can remember idolising Amnesty in the 70s and 80s, when it stuck to campaigning for those suffering from political imprisonment and torture (and similar issues that unconscionably failed to centre trans people's existence). So fucking heartbreaking to see how it has been parasitised.

MyThreeWords · 17/07/2026 08:35

fromorbit · 17/07/2026 00:08

Bristol Council thinks it can't be touched. Just like Amnesty did. They found out differently.

Laws exist actually.

Anyway Women of Wessex have their number the court case is ongoing. Jo Bartosch is asking awkward questions of key players.

There is signs of a massive data breach that is an absolute no go in local government.

Could you say what this reference to Amnesty facing consequences is? Is it somewhere on this thread? Sorry to be a nuisance.

Thanks @SingleSexSpacesInSchools always pleased when I see your comments!
how on earth do people think that there should be a difference between “single sex changing” and “strictly single sex” does David Lloyd and similar think actually the first mean, “actually anyone really”

I am so fed up having stupid discussions with lanyard class bell ends it’s got to the point where I don’t trust them to say “female changing” any more and I have to tie them down in actual definitions. Tiresome and pointless. Have high hopes of forcing David Lloyd’s hands but it should not need to be done at all!

SingleSexSpacesInSchools · 17/07/2026 08:01

That’s not single sex then. See my letters to them.

I have been a David Lloyd member for decades

I have regularly visited the York club.

The Changing rooms are single sex

Clubs like Bannantye are STRICTLY single sex

That’s not single sex then. See my letters to them.

Brilliant work from Jo!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/07/2026 02:28

I’m not talking about the voters, I’m talking about the members, the ones paying for the party and calling the shots now. You’ve completely grasped the wrong end of the stick, not for the first time.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/07/2026 02:26

I didn’t say “the entire left” have decamped to the Greens, don’t misquote me, please. I said the entire far left. You have an odd bias towards what you personally perceive as respectable views. It really isn’t as simplistic as “left wing yay and no true Scotsman”. Women who understand far more than you about it have laid it out in those long threads you CBA to read. You’re very naive.

No argument with you at all about queer politics which I have commented on probably hundreds of times on here but it’s absolutely a leftist project.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/07/2026 02:19

You have no idea @IwantToRetire

IwantToRetire · 17/07/2026 01:29

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/07/2026 08:42

Of course it’s left wing politics. Do you not realise that the entire far left wing of Labour have decamped to the Greens?

This is just how you perceive it.

Its too facile to say the entire left has decamped. That's just rubbish.

A lot of people voting Green because they feel betrayed by Labour is not "decamping".

And even if this left wing you seem to know about have decamped, it is just as easy to say they have ceased to be left wing.

Anyway you have missed the point.

What the Greens are doing, is not about being a political party, as pointed out on another thread this is about ideologues taking over a "party" and then carry on as though they are still students thinking posturing and harassing is the same as being a political party in this instance with an obligation to carry out and implement services for the area ie Bristol.

There is of course a much bigger discussion to be had about why UK politics is so abysmal that these minority group has power. Following Starmer's so called stunning victory - actually a travesty as he got less votes than Corbyn - on one of the lowest turn out.

The takeover of various institutions is, as has been discussed many times is a classic example of entryism by the queer followers who as we know have been networking and slowly infiltrating not just political politics but businesses, the media.

Not forgetting that it was the Conservatives who wanted to bring in self id etc..

To not understand that and think it is about left and right totally underestimates that this isn't about politics. This is about a wholesale onslaught on social norms. Which of course is the intent of queer politics, to disrupt the norms.
