A former teacher has been found guilty of sexually abusing and murdering a baby boy that he planned to adopt.

Jamie Varley, 37, was convicted at Preston Crown Court of murder, child cruelty, sexual offences and indecent images relating to 13-month-old Preston Davey.

John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was convicted of allowing the death of a child, child cruelty and sexual assault.

Varley was in the process of adopting baby Preston (also known as Elijah) with his partner McGowan-Fazakerley. Just four months after being placed with the couple, Preston was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital unconscious and in cardiac arrest. Sadly, Preston could not be saved.

Varley tried falsely claiming that Preston had accidentally drowned in a bath, but prosecutors were able to prove that his injuries were consistent with his airways being obstructed.

The evidence presented by the prosecution proved that in the final months of Preston’s life, he was routinely ill-treated, sexually abused and physically assaulted – suffering more than 40 separate injuries.

I thought there was a thread about this, but cant find one. But sorry if a duplicate.

I really only wanted to post out of respect for this poor baby and the horror of his short life.

Sorry, what? Nobody is being treated as the messiah. By whom exactly? What "narrative?" Why not just stop being so rude to people and making wild accusations? It's coming across as unhinged and targeted.

And yeah, accusing people of right wing bigotry is not quite as FACTUALLY CORRECT as you seem to think. Card carrying leftie here, for example, I don't tend to have much time for actual right wing "bigots" myself though I tend not to throw the term "bigot" around, as its so hyperbolic. I have no idea of the political affiliation of the poster you've decided to insult this time.; she just said she didn't object to other people being conservatives. And I don't treat anybody as "the messiah" thank you. No need to. What a very odd thing to say.

As I said, give it a rest. I see you've done this on other threads too, including throwing insults and extreme rudeness at people who objectively have considerably more professional experience than yourself. It's just derailing, Really, don't be surprised if people choose to bypass your posts. I certainly will be in future. There is no need for the constant insults.

It’s quite easy to read back through the whole thread.

I have read the whole thread and didn't see it, that's why I asked if someone could point it out. So if there is an example of right wing bigotry please point it out so I don't risk aligning myself with bigots, thanks

In my experience ( ran women's refuge services, and yes only biological women)

I was involved in trying to fend off care proceedings against “feckless”women who had dangerous men in their lives.

What was stark was that we had women in refuge who were protecting their children from sexual abuse.

what was lamentable was that social workers seemed to struggle with this concept, and the mothers assertions were often received with scepticism.

I had a case of a step dad rape of a 12 year old which the social worker deemed consensual

The worst one was a child with anal warts, he was two.

the Social services day nursery workers phoned me up crying as referrals in to their own council team did nothing,, his behaviour deteriorated every time he had enforced contact.

Mother was young and emotionally paralysed by the situation.

we took it in to family court.

CAFCAS and social care, as did dad’s barrister argued for contact.

Luckily we had a shit hot team of a solicitor and barrister.

I could write a book.

we need independent oversight where children are involved which is not attached to statutory services.

BTW NSPCC are equally shit

That is the most heart breaking thing I have ever read, I cannot comprehend that a person could do that to a child.

The anniversary of little Preston's death today. 27 July. 3 years ago. It's hard to believe anyone could be so cruel and messed up and that nobody intervened.

HectorPlasm · 27/07/2026 19:43

Has anyone in prison attacked them yet?

We haven't heard anything so probably not.
Wouldn't be surprised if he's another that tries to get himself into Broadmoor instead of Prison. Last we heard he was refusing to eat.
How the hell did they end up adoptees?

I am adding this here as I just wanted to acknowledge the short and violent life of Isabelle Welsh, 2 years old.

NB content of article extremely distressing.

That poor baby. And again discharged 10 days before her death by the NHS despite her broken leg.

I am beginning to think men should only be let out under licence and close supervision at all times.

I know the mother colluded, but as far as I understand didn't behave like this until this man moved in.

I think I saw a headline that there was an outstanding arrest warrant for the paedophile who murdered that poor child. I don't understand why the Police force that issued it hadn't arrested him. The details I know are upsetting enough, that poor child, I've been avoiding finding out too much.

The mother was abusive at the hospital. More mistakes though, shouldn't have been sent home with her.

Mother was drinking 10 pints of lager a night. Just disgusting. Shouldn't even be in a charge of a child if she's going to do that. Where do they get the money too? I doubt she was working?

When is this going to stop? A parent shouldn't be allowed to move an unrelated male stranger into the home.
Where are the child's rights to be safe?

That's no excuse. A decent mother wouldn't entertain him. She was just as bad. Scum attract scum.

No. This is far sweeping, utterly over-stepping and reactionary.

You don't make rules for everyone due to a small number of people's poor choices. What does moving in mean? What is a stranger in this context?

Can I not have a cousin I've never met before from Australia stay for a couple of months?

Why would you have my choices of who I have in my house so easily given over to the government? I don't need the government (or you) to make my decisions for me.

In principle I completely agree that it is generally unwise for a woman to allow a man she doesn't know to move in with her and her child without more knowledge, but suggesting legislating around it is far too far.

Id rather that we had a dv offenders list much like we do for sex offenders and you had to have a Claire law check or some sort of dbs check. Realistically though there isn't the manpower or governmental will to do anything, even when social services are supervising an adoption they cant/wont protect kids, so what hope could we have that theyd protect kids that arent on their radar

You seem to have jumped in at the deep end.

Nobody has mention the law.

Contributors to the thread are making comments about inviting men to live in a home where there is / are young children.

Over the top histrionics make a discussion a shouting match.

Get a grip.

In an ideal world this would be great.

And, not specifically referring to this sad case, we also need to get women to understand that it is the men closest to her, whether through family or relationship who is the greatest threat to her.

Sadly. But not one will talk about this.

Have just seen statistics for both US and UK and in biological fathers are worse offenders than live in boyfriends. Over 50% in the US and around 46% in the UK.

How utterly depressing.

Not clear if these figures are from those sentenced for the crime or from statistics gather from people who report later in life that they were abused.
