Start using Mumsnet PremiumFilm about sexual harassment in workplaces in India is pulled from a screening in New York as it is 'transphobic'
(52 Posts)In fact - it's even worse than that, it was pulled because the filmmaker, Vaishnavi Sundar, had once tweeted that 'women's sex-based oppression is real'.
'Many moons ago I got into a Twitterspat about pre-op trans women in women’s shelters, prisons, bathrooms and women’s sports. And someone had brought the tweets in question to the organisers’ attention. As a result, the Polis Project thought it was only fair to shelve a screening of a film about a pressing topic that affects women across all social strata in society. All because the filmmaker believes biological sex is not a social construct, that women’s sex-based oppression is real, that housing people with male genitalia in spaces with victims of male sexual violence can be harrowing to women inmates, that mental illnesses like autogynephilia and other dysphorias can cause dangerous, irrevocable damage, and that gender theorists are erasing women, much like patriarchy does.
'I grew up in Avadi in the south of India. I have spent most of my life working with marginalised women. But I was simply not the right flavour of woke for the postmodern, queer-theory espousing desis of Manhattan.'

Christ. That's awful.
Wow.
Just wow.
Having said that, I am sick of seeing concepts such as "feminism" and "patriarchy" used by organisations and individuals who pretend not to know what biological sex is or understand that without biological sex there would not even be the class of woman and the oppression that comes with it. Horrific as it is, it is a step towards honesty. Trans ideology (note I said ideology, not trans people - most supporters seem not to be trans themselves) is inherently misogynistic and gynaephobic. I'd like supporters of trans ideology to own that.
I sincerely hope Vaishnavi Sundar finds a platform for her film.
Jesus. I like that she's come out fighting though.
Fucking hell.
That is indeed awful. Racist as well as misogynist.
But yes, what an amazingly powerful voice Vaishnavi Sundar’s is. I wonder if she could be invited to show her film here in the UK?
It’s a great article. Power to her.
I would love to see that film. If anyone is interested, Vaishnavi is on medium, and well worth a follow: medium.com/*@vaishax*
Fucking hell.
It’s mind-boggling. A woman of colour whose feminism is truly intersectional (in the original, non-bastardised sense of the word), whose work is highlighting issues faced by vulnerable, disadvantaged women, is no-platformed, and her important work effectively banned from being shown - just because she recognises the reality of sex and sex-based oppression.
A piece of work that doesn’t even touch on the issue of transgenderism.
The trans cult is misogynist, homophobic, racist poison.
How long before it is shown up for the oppressive, abusive shitshow it is?
Wow. I know men’s sexual fantasies outweigh women’s real-life needs and concerns — that’s pointed out to us everyday.
But now white wokesters don’t even have to pretend to respect Indian women fighting oppression and violence. Not even paying lip service.
That link didn’t work for me, GCAcademic.
I just found her on FB, but the top post says she’s not on there any more.
Have banned myself from Twitter so can’t follow her there!

It's not just white wokesters though. She mentions Indian activists and woke Manhattan desis.
The common denominators are liberal feminism and trans rights activism.
Sorry, the link I posted above shouldn't have the asterisks. MN automatically inserts them as it wants to bold anything after @ thinking you are trying to tag another MNer. I don't know how to post it without it doing it again.

Completely agree. I've noticed plenty of woke queer theory adherents amongst Indian academics and artists.
Tell that to the murdered girl babies, victims of 'Eve teasing'', girls raped with metal bars and the rest of the abuse that Indiian women encounter.
This ideology is simply evil. Straight up fucking evil.
This ideology is simply evil. Straight up fucking evil.
Yes. It really is.
And so many people are so blind to it.
That's appalling
Thanks GC, I’ve found it now via google
I was going to say unbelievable ... but we know that it's not. This is precisely the narrative that is being played out world wide in a variety of ways, including in the UK.
Sexism, poverty, racism, abuse, grooming children? Nothing matters or even registers in the face of this vile narrative promoted by far too many people. It's not everyone involved obviously (for the benefit of the monitors) but just awful that this can happen to a filmmaker like Vaishnavi Sundar.
Sunlight really exposes all this doesn't it?
As I’ve said before, claiming that a detain section of the community are the ‘most oppressed’, is a complete load of bollocks. Not one of those vulnerable women or girls could identify out of their REAL oppression. They are really determined to shut women up, aren’t they! If we can’t talk about the oppression that females suffer, then we can pretend that women and men are treated equally and let all males into all the female spaces.
Absurd. But hopefully helpful in the long run? Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight.
