UK school toilets: this never happens

Schools design single-user toilets to open onto corridor. All very equal -sounding. But oh dear, who would have thought:
toilets are individual cubicles on to the corridor near reception like disabled toilets so not like they can mess about. ...DD has also let slip that she doesn't like to go at break even when she does need to go then because the boys have figured how to open the doors and push them open when staff aren't there.
Male teacher STILL making toilet pass dd wait , what next?!

I bet the school never did an impact assessment on girls' rights to privacy and safety, when designing those toilets. It's a MN thread, not a newspaper report, but I wanted to highlight examples of half-arsed good intentions leading to poor results.

If my dd was at that school, I'd just pop in & see if it is possible to open the doors from outside, then explain the situation to the head teacher-its not good enough.

The school need to address the behaviour. The types of kids that do this will be causing trouble in other areas of the school, not just toilets. How are there no staff around when it's by reception? I only know of 1 school with toilets like this, situated by reception and they don't have any issues. They don't allow any hanging around.

This just makes me so angry, the contempt for girls is palpable

Snarglefisker · 23/04/2019 17:08

For safety reasons all school toilet doors are unlockable from outside, if I remember correctly from my distant past.

Hidingtonothing · 23/04/2019 17:10

I hate that this will just become yet another thing girls have to put up with at school, like the bra-pinging, arse-pinching etc when I was at school. How the fuck is this shit progress? Angry

BeansandRice · 23/04/2019 17:13

Yes, reading this made me very angry.

Despite feminist or feminism-influenced mothers who must by now be very aware that this is not the way to raise boys, boys are still thinking that this sort of thing is OK to do.

Is it their fathers teaching them this sort of behaviour is OK? Or is it the school turning a blind eye?

It's just awful, and must make parents tear their hair out that this sort of behaviour still happens.

Isitweekendyet · 23/04/2019 17:32

Things like this make me irrationally angry.

Whilst I can rhyme off a dozen punishments that I would see fitting I don't think any of them would be very PC or well received by parents.

So if I were the head, I would call the whole school in for assembly and say anyone caught opening the doors will face immediate suspension and install CCTV facing the toilets. Bet it would stop pretty quickly when there were consequences.

Kids can be horrible.

Yes, you are correct, toilet doors can be unlocked from the outside. Often it can be done with a coin. Not sure what type the schools use.

I would be more concerned if they couldn't be unlocked from the outside.
It is standard practice for health and safety reasons.
However, now that the sex boundaries are being eroded, I'm not surprised the girls are avoiding them. I know I would have avoided going to the loo as a teenager at school.

And I'd probably avoid them now, if there were teenage boys around.

WrathofscumKlop · 23/04/2019 17:57

Of course, separate cubicles for both sexes are there to protect the boys as well.
