Attention! Draft new sex and relationships education guidelines

Earlier this year there was a consultation on the current sex and relationships education guidance which I think hadn't changed since 2000 (I think!)

It's so important that these are 'got right' for our children for such a range of reasons.

I've not read it yet but I know many will be interested to see what the guidance is.

At my DS's school, this week the yr9s seem to be having a whole day on LGBT issues - which would be fine, if it weren't for the trans ideology taking over such things, and telling them scientific untruths.

I would very much like to find out the content of these lessons before I consent to my son attending - if it's a load of unscientific clap trap about women can have penises too, then NO.

Just had a quick scan through, it seems reasonable. Though if your teaching children about boundaries, privacy and safety, on one hand I'm not sure how those schools that are implementing gender neutral toilets, essentially over riding girls boundaries and privacy without consulting girls/parents are able to justify it to themselves

DSDs school had one of these not long ago. She says homosexuality/bisexuality were barely even covered at all and it was 95% all about trans issues. Which is not surprising given how things are recently

The bit on supporting menstruating girls seems v sensible, and one would have thought it precluded unisex toilets......

Have had a quick scan of it and liked what I read. Of course, despite knowing that sex is a protected characteristic the guidelines then use the word 'gender' throughout.
And yes, I noticed the same point Lefthanddown. It does give schools some ammunition to counter the 'gender neutral toilets' & 'mixed sex changing' lobby groups.

As of course does the DfE guidance which highlights that schools MUST provide single sex toilets and washing facilities for all pupils over the age of 8 - link for anyone who needs it.

I wasn't aware of this.

My DS attends a secondary which is in a new-build school - built in 2016. All the toilets are gender-neutral. I've just checked with him.

How has a new-build school flout this, I wonder?

Actually, it's a free school, so I bet that's why they have been able to flout it.

It's a fantastic school, so I'm not about to kick up a fuss. I'm just about girls dealing with periods when they are sharing toilets with the boys. I would've hated that.

Reaction to draft guidance on relationships and health education in schools

Commenting on new plans published today by Education Secretary Damian Hinds, Chair of the Women and Equalities Committee, Maria Miller MP, said:

"The publication of the draft Relationships and Sex Education guidance is very welcome as a critical step forwards for children’s safety.

It follows our report on Sexual harassment and sexual violence in schools in 2016 which found that school is not a safe or equal learning environment for many children, especially girls.

Those working at the grassroots have known this for many years and it is positive that the Government is now starting to listen.

I would urge schools to start implementing the new RSE guidance as soon as is practicable and not wait until it is in force.

In addition, new safeguarding guidance on sexual violence will be in place this September so schools should prioritise making sure that their policies and procedures clearly address sexual harassment and sexual violence, and the culture that underpins them.

All children have the right to grow and learn in a safe and supportive environment.”

Important point
The new guidance has been developed in response to a national call for evidence earlier this year and includes topics like mental wellbeing, consent, keeping safe online, physical health and fitness and LGBT issues. It will now be subject to a further 12-week consultation on the content and how the subjects are taught.

I've only skimmed myself but noticed the sex and gender conflation.

I will contribute to the consultation and highlight the need to teach the difference between sex and gender.

I also noticed they referred to "gender reassignment" rather than identity; given you need to be a certain age to be 'reassigned' (I assume they mean surgery/ hormones etc) it seems like there isn't too much room for 'identifying as' situations.

I had a quick look at this last night.
"Pupils should be taught the facts and the law about sex, sexuality, sexual health and gender identity in an age-appropriate and inclusive way". There's a lot of talk in the draft guidelines about teaching the "facts". What are the facts? Where do they come from?

I'd like to respond to this consultation but feel a bit ill-equipped. But my gut feeling is this is an important one.

I'm a teacher and I'm on a committee to review and develop these 'Agenda' resources for schools which are from Wales but going to be issued across England as well. I'm pretty terrified of going to the meeting as I know it will be very 'woke'. I thought here might be a good thread to ask for advice on how to share my thoughts on the 'Rotifer Project' (page 51-53) in a way that will be listened to. It also links to classics such as the gender unicorn and clownfish.
