Hoping this turns into a clicky link because I can't see how to do it.

Really hoping this makes more and more people reach peak trans!

picklemepopcorn · 17/09/2017 19:29

There was a good article in the Guardian today. From a person who was reversing their transition. He commented about hostile the current climate is for discussing trans affairs. All push, no discrimination.

marzipananimal · 17/09/2017 19:31

Brilliant!

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 17/09/2017 19:36

Thanks Wrapped, It's been posted already on a few thread in FWR if you want to have a look

franke · 17/09/2017 19:46

pickle could you point me in the direction of that article? I've just looked for it in the guardian online but can't find it.

Good clip from sky news.

Thelilywhite · 17/09/2017 19:54

Thanks 😊

(That was interesting btw, I got an email from mumsnet saying i'd been mentioned in a post. V. exciting)

Ohthegrandolddukeofyorkjellies · 17/09/2017 21:01

I feel so happy after watching this clip. I do wish people would stop conflating sex and gender, though. I'll forgive them in this case because their discussion was so clear and well thought out.

Crazyweimlady · 17/09/2017 21:02

This speaker puts across the points really succinctly and makes it very accessible to those of us who are just discovering these issues. It's good to see free speech still happening in the U.K. in what feels like a thought police patrolled environment (even if it is in the small hours!!)

Stopmakingsense · 17/09/2017 21:21

I have to say that all my friends are now talking about this - and in a much more critical way. Am off to email that Sky News clip to them!

thatstoast · 17/09/2017 21:39

We really need to assert the difference between sex and gender and from then on establish areas where we differentiate by one or the other.

It's never been necessary in the past as, for the most part, people with a particular sex had the corresponding gender.

Clothing is differentiated by Gender.
Changing Rooms are differentiated by Sex

And so on.

I would hope, if we could get to that point, people would realise that Gender is not needed.

wrappedupinmyselflikeaspool · 17/09/2017 22:19

Assigned what is FWR?

That's toast and grand old duke yes the use of gender instead of sex irritated me too but I was just so pleased that she was talking about it and in such a gender critical way.

The Guardian article is really candid about it being about male hierarchies and being at the bottom of it, when the gender confusion started.

I mean, brave and honest article, but he is basically saying that he was at the bottom of the heap for men, so therefore being a woman made sense.

thatstoast · 17/09/2017 22:24

Yes, nothing wrong with what they said in general but that slip just reinforced how difficult a subject it is to talk about. Even well educated people struggle to separate and define sex and gender.

FWR is this forum. We used to be feminism and women's rights.

IndominusRex · 19/09/2017 07:10

Only just watched this clip. I like how you can almost see it dawning on the man. Do we know who the woman was? She was excellent.

Butterymuffin · 19/09/2017 13:07

Christina Patterson, writer. Haven't heard of her before but she did a good job here.

IndominusRex · 19/09/2017 14:22

Thanks Buttery

SerfTerf · 19/09/2017 14:30

Christina Patterson has had a long career in journalism. She is conservative and Catholic. I seem to spend a lot of time muttering "strange bedfellows" since this all blew up Smile

SerfTerf · 19/09/2017 14:31

But, yes, she did a fabulous job.
