How many poos a day is normal?
(19 Posts)Any advice appreciated.
Louie is 20 weeks old tomorrow. About 6 weeks ago I changed his food from Purina kibble to Wainwrights. Main reason being, he just didn't seem to like it. Some meals he would refuse despite being offered nothing else.
Wainwrights on the other hand, he practically inhales! He has 95g a day which is the maximum for his predicted weight as an adult (5kg, he's 3.7 at the mo).
But since this new food (which has a much higher meat content) he is pooing sooo much! He's not having accidents but seriously, it's 6 or 7 today. A few days ago I thought maybe I wasn't feeding him enough as he always seems insatiably hungry (yes he's wormed to date) but I'm starting to think that he's just greedy? His body is obviously not coping well with the amount of food going in? What are your thoughts?
How many meals are you feeding? My dog is on the same food, has been since around 22weeks ( he's now 2 years old ), when younger he would poop up to 4 times a day, now he goes twice. It probably does depend on the breed and how often you feed, as long as poo's are not runny I wouldn't worry too much, it will probably settle down as he gets older.
2 feeds, morning and night.
His stools are loose. Not runny squitty but definitely loose and a bit sloppy. He's a chihuahua.
He's only small I just can't bear to think of all that poo inside him! Can't be comfy!!
I would try another food, his poo's should be quite firm on a dirty food so it might not be the right food for him, you could look at raw feeding as it wouldn't cost very much as he is a tiny breed .
I raw feed so my dogs poo once a day, or every other day.
I went from scooping poop from the lawn with a shovel 5 times a day to sweeping with a dustpan and brush once a day when we changed to raw feeding.
No more wind and lovely firm solid poo! www.naturesmenu.co.uk/range-natures-menu-dog.aspx?gclid=Cj0KEQiA8rilBRDZu_G8hszXraoBEiQABlB9Y3OoFeuWZ99qu0ECpx401CAXB0iFr0pZfQvkm4mujooaAqTX8P8HAQ
Your tiny dog would need such a small amount of raw food.
I'd try less food - loose stools, especially on a higher meat content can be a sign of over feeding.
I have a 6 month old puppy on Arden Grange. He tends to poo during most walks so 3 times a day. I also find the odd poo at the side of the house- not sure if these are additional ones or when he skips a walk one!
Mine have Royal Canin Boxer breed and do two firm stools a day
Once or occasionally twice a day here firm so easy to pick up. He helpfully chooses to go near the doggy bin on his first walk of the day too
I was told anything from 1 to 6 times a day falls into the 'normal' category.
I have read a tiny bit about raw feeding. I might look into it more. He does have bad wind too! For this mornings feed I have reduced the amount. It's very easy and convenient on this food so I will give him a couple of weeks on reduced amount and see how we go. Thanks for your comments!
I would raw feed if my dog wasn't so huge , we don't have room to put a freezer or store much which is why I keep both of mine on dry ( I do cook them Meat from time to time too ), I can walk my lab x for hours and he will still come home and poop in the garden.
We had this problem with our puppy. It stopped immediately when we switched to Lily's kitchen. She was going up to ten times a day and it was just a loose heap. Now she goes three times and it is firm! Sorry for the detail.
Two dogs, one poo a day each, very occasionally two. Raw fed.
My pug is raw fed too, and poops about three times a day, sometimes four. They are firm.
Lily's kitchen is fab
Can I ask a few questions about raw? I've fed him 70g instead of 95g today. So far, 3 poos. I've put it in a smaller bowl so I don't feel I'm being mean ;)
I've read that the eat bones? Will my little chi be able to manage that? What if they get stuck?
How do you know you're feeding the right balance of meat, bones and organs?
Is it worth me popping into a local raw pet food shop? I don't want to leave feeling like a bad owner if I don't buy it!
3 poos yay! And I think no2 was only due to the excitement of of forest walk! And no wind.
