How many naps for an 8-month old?

Hi all,

I have an 8-month old DD who is generally (fingers crossed it continues!) a good sleeper during the night, but seems more and more reluctant to nap during the day. I was wondering about the experiences of those with babies of a similar age - structured naps, random naps, no naps?

Thanks for any thoughts!

My son had 2 naps at this age - a longish morning nap and a shorter pm one

Mine has two - short one in the morning (30 mins max) and long in the afternoon (1.5-2.5 hours).

At this age he'd have one or two naps. Always one 3-4 hours after he woke. (About 1 or 2 hours long) Then maybe a half an hour nap in the afternoon. But he started to drop this second one about 8 or 9 months. (But he goes to bed for the night at 6pm)

My DD is 8 months. She has two main naps and sometimes an additional powernap. I have always been quite structured with her sleep.

She has around 1.5h in the morning, into the cot between 9.00am-9.30am.

In the afternoon she is usually ready for her afternoon nap at 1.30pm and would sleep for probably 2h. However because I have the school run and she sleeps in the cot, I have to wake her at 3pm so she has 1.5h unless she is ready for a sleep more like 1.00pm.

Given this, she sometimes has a half hour powernap after dinner, 5.30pm ish on the days she had to be woken rather than waking up herself in the afternoon.

2 - one at 11.30 til 1, the other at 4.30 - 5.30. Bed from 8-8 iirc, unless teething, ill or if all of Jupiter's moons weren't aligned.

We had 2 naps until 15/6 months and still have one nap at nearly 3!

Oh I'd quite like to work towards that 11.30 and 4.30 routine, would fit in nicely with AM baby groups and school run.

My older children had to be actively encouraged to drop their lunchtime nap ready for starting school. Mine have all been 4y+ before dropping that lunchtime nap.

My DD is 9.5 months and still naps every 2 hours but only for 35 minutes (this has increased recently from 20-25 minutes!) Unless we are in the car and then she can nap for around 45 minutes.

She sleeps anywhere between 11-13 hours at night so I'm not concerned with the day time naps.

All babies are different, some need more sleep in the day and some need less sleep. As long as your DD is happy I wouldn't be too concerned with what everyone else's babies are napping.

It was a good routine. Ds moved to a new nursery at 15/6 months and they pushed him back to a 12.30 nap. We've just pushed this back a bit whenever he's started waking up too early as it seems to be connected.

For those who don't take their first nap until late in the morning, what's your feeding schedule like? My DS at 8 months is waking at around 6 and has a bf when he wakes, solids for breakfast about an hour later, but is pretty much ready for a nap within 2, 2 1/2 hours of waking. If he were to start to extend that awake time, what would the feeding look like?

DS is 8 months and I had to introduce a firm nap routine after they went haywire a few weeks ago and if left to his own devices he'd go to bed circa 9/10pm! That's when I go to bed and I refuse to not have adult time Grin

Our routine goes like this:
Wake up 7-7.30 (DS led, I am so not a morning person!)
Breakfast 8.30
Nap 9.30-11
Lunch 12.30
Nap 2-3.30
Dinner 6
PJ's, teeth etc 6.30
Asleep 7-7.30

He is still BF on demand around these times and a couple of times a night bur this is working for us at the moment :) less sleep and he can see through space and time, more and he doesn't go to bed til far too late! I think he needs slightly more sleep than most babies his age though, as far as I can tell from friends.

This was about the age my LO transitioned to 2 naps from 3 - he's now 9.5 mths. I helped it along a bit by pushing out his morning nap to start around 8.45 (used to be 8 as he was up with the birds at 5.30....still is though). Now he does around an hour in the morning and anything from 1 to 2.5 hrs in the afternoon starting at 1.30.

DS, 9mo, is up at between 6am and 7am. He then has a short nap at 9-ish, up to an hour, but usually more like 30-40mins because we usually have to be somewhere at about 10am. Then he has a longer nap after lunch, anywhere between 1 and 3 hours. I wake him by about 3.45pm if he's not already awake though so he'll go down at 7pm.
