Hello

Thought some of you might be interested to see that we were featured on the Peston Show on ITV last night; you can see it at around 2 minutes in here.

You'll see they show a graph showing how many Mumsnet users clicked on Talk threads that mention words to do with violence against women. (The search words we used were: sexual harassment|sexual violence|rape|violence against women|sexual assault|domestic violence| - and for the last two weeks, we added the search term 'sarah everard').

(To be clear, this search string will have picked up very long discussion threads that mention one or more of these terms in passing.)

Here's the graph, running over the last three months. In the two weeks before Sarah Everard's disappearance began to be reported, discussions containing these search terms made up around 7% of the total page views on all discussion threads. In the most recent two weeks (since Sarah's disappearance was reported) the same category of discussion threads made up around 12% of all Talk page views on Mumsnet (3,977,742 pageviews out of 31,888,455 in that period).

As the journalist Anushka Asthana says when presenting the figures on Peston, one point to note is the ongoing prevalence and relevance of these search terms in conversations on Mumsnet, even at times when there isn't such a shocking and high-profile case in the news.

As ever it would be great to hear what you think. And of course our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of Sarah Everard as well as to the loved ones of all the women killed.

I've just read a horrifying thread posted by Sali Hughes on twitter which highlights police inaction, showing again how violence/rape is virtually decriminalised. Also, I did not know that victims have only 6 months to make a complaint (there's a petition linked to this) which I was not aware of.

I watched that and thought at the time that it confirms what women all know - that we have been speaking about VAWG in all its forms for ever and depressingly, nobody has been listening.

Tartyflette · 18/03/2021 16:42

I signed the petition that Sali posted.
Her thread is appalling and highlights truly shocking behaviour on the part of the police - and is a perfect illustration of institutional misogyny. I urge everyone to read the thread and look at the petition. It's not a crowdfunder, it's a petition to Parliament.

From the revelations about the age-cap on some statistics in the Observer 's recent Femicide Census campaign, to the recent rejection of CWJ's challenge to the CPS about rape prosecutions, this feels like yet another buttress in systemic support for VAWG.

Sali Hughes' thread is a necessary and distressing read.

Look at Crimebodge on Youtube for info. on numbers of criminals remaining in police forces. (In one case, the man had 27 offences known, recorded, found guilty, and no further action) The site is run by a man.

Thanks @RowanMumsnet - this is such an important site for gathering stories and statistics about VAWAG, amongst lots of other things.

We see the patterns on here.

ForeverInADay · 18/03/2021 22:49

I've signed the petition to parliament too. It is truly outrageous.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/03/2021 23:29

I've signed it, and also put a link on the MN petitions board

Signed.
