Been reading Facebook posts this morning, pissed off and I'm not even out of bed yet!

One plus though - I've found mma groups to have a lot of factual comments

Julia Szeremeta has to fight Lin Tu Ying at 8.30 tonight.

I just don't know what I would have done without this thread over the last few days. It's kept me sane (ish).

kiterunning · 10/08/2024 08:27

The main difficulty for me is that I think in the long term, gold medal wins for these cheats may be the only way we can prolong the discussion. Disgusting I know and obvs not wishing harm on their brave female opponents..

YogaForDummies · 10/08/2024 08:36

It's a shame the Olympics has lost all credibility, it used to be fairly well regarded. Oh well, just suppose all TV shows/ ancient tournaments lose steam eventually 😅

I just don't know what I would have done without this thread over the last few days. It's kept me sane (ish).

There is something maddening and disorientating and awful about watching an obvious man fighting in the women's category, and having the male BBC commentators criticising the woman for not being able to beat him, praising him to the skies, and constantly referring to him as she and "the woman in red" and "the first female Algerian boxer to win".

It's like having someone with state sanctioned authority tell you that grass is yellow, except much much worse, because it highlights how utterly precarious our position in society is.

biddyboo · 10/08/2024 08:44

I have seen some gloating tweets on Twitter (Zarah Sultana 🙄) but these posts get a lot of pushback in the comments. The impression I get is that the majority of people don't agree with what is happening in women's sports. Is that not the impression other people are getting on social media? Maybe it's just my algorithm.

Superhansrantowindsor · 10/08/2024 08:47

Unfortunately the narrative that has prevailed is that this boxer is female and everyone are just mean bullies. It’s the IOC fault as they have been really confusing with their statements.

Just seen this on another thread. Just shows how quick they are to disqualify when political statements are made. The women making XX signs must know they are risking their medals once they’ve got that far.

I'm assuming the commentators didn't take note of the reach of Imane Khelif.

The thread has been going too fast for me to catch up so it might have been mentioned (I'd be surprised if it hadn't been).

Vespanest · 10/08/2024 08:48

I had a read about the commentator, he is freelance, which was probably the worst scenario as it’s clear he spoke by trying to disguise there was any controversy by becoming nothing more than a cheerleader. It was a look no bias here so hire me again

It's the fault of the mainstream media, IMO. They have pushed that narrative or failed to do any research and muddied the waters.

arethereanyleftatall · 10/08/2024 08:57

This whole scandal has moved on over the past few days for me.

Imane is very clearly a man, the being carried on the shoulders thing last night, never ever would allowed with a Muslim woman, being the pinnacle.

Someone is laughing at the world.

Someone is seeing just how stupid people can be, how many will say 'she' if they're told to.

But why and how?

Surely having a refugee team is a political statement.

YogaForDummies · 10/08/2024 08:57

The media's stance has basically been DSDs exist and confuse even doctors. DSDs do exist, but people are still born either male or female and if they have one of these it means the expression of their sex can be unusual. So he is almost certainly male, probably without fully formed genitals or gonads, but still male and a man, whether he wants to live as a woman or not. It's as if not being able to have all the working parts of a man automatically makes him a woman.

This is a possibility. A public display to peak the world of how unbelievably stupid the far left and the clueless sheep who follow have become.

SabrinaThwaite · 10/08/2024 09:00

Oliver Brown at the Telegraph at least gets it.

It has been the starkest illustration of a failure of governance at the highest level of global sport. By allowing biological males to fight as women through pure self-ID, the IOC have caused irreparable damage to their claims of protecting the sanctity and integrity of the female category.

I am seeing normies who never voiced an opinion about trans issues before coming out in support of the male boxers. It's appalling. And to think we thought this would turn the tide.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 10/08/2024 09:11

Well, Khalif has got the medal.

in The Merchant of Venice, when the Prince of Morocco chooses the golden casket, the scroll inside says:

‘All that glisters is not gold,
Often have you heard that told.
Many a man his life hath sold ,
But my outside to behold.
Gilded tombs do worms enfold.
Had you been as wise as bold,
Young in limbs, in judgment old,
Your answer had not been inscrolled.’

The ‘ answer’ of course, is that he does not win the big prize, but goes home empty handed and disconsolate.

It's horrific isn't it.

Like some kind of social experiment to see how far you can push people who have no thinking capacity.

People commenting on the shoulders thing, has anyone said Khelif is actually a muslim? I guess there are differing degrees of strictness even so, but don't know how common that is in Algeria. I mean, if it's true that this wouldn't happen, that would suggest Khelif doesn't even believe Khelif is a woman. That's a whole different level of cheating.

Assuming she does actually still believe she's female, I could, still, have sympathy for the boxer herself. She is almost certainly surrounded by people lying to her. I'd bet she's being told by her own team doctors that she's female, and that the whole thing is a smear campaign. You would be upset and defiant in that circumstance wouldn't you?

Someone's done a real job on Khelif's Wikipedia page
"Following Khelif's victory over Italy's Angela Carini during the 2024 Olympic Games, misinformation surfaced on social media about her gender."

I'm also seeing people being peaked by this, so it's not all bad news.

The media has been utterly appalling though, with a few notable exceptions.

A lot of image management has been going on. I’ve seen plenty of pictures of Khelif that have obviously had filters applied to make him look more facially 'womanly'. Then you see eg the glossy boxing publicity video where it’s unfilteredand er no.

There’s a whole very carefully co-ordinated operation at work here so in terms of your point, @thirdfiddle, I’d find it very hard to believe that Khelif believes he’s actually a woman. For a start, he was tested a good while ago now, had the results, had the option to appeal but dropped that appeal. Any further investigation at the Court of Arbitration for Sport would have made the results public for all to see. So you have to ask yourself why the appeal wasn’t kept going if they were so confident of his being proved right?
