That poor poor man. And he was an adult. It’s going to be horrendous when the children who have been put through this realise what has happened to them. I think this will be the first case of many. I think this will be this centuries thalidomide.

ResentfulLemon · 23/06/2022 22:38

That poor man. This is why it's so important to not class explorative therapy for gender dysmorphia as being "conversion" therapy or transphobic. Some time with an adequate professional would have uncovered the base fears about this man's sexuality that are admitted to in the article and how to handle it.

Instead of a content gay man, we have a castrated and traumatised gay man who will never get to experience a normal life.

There are absolutely some people who genuinely benefit from this radical and invasive treatment but there really should be far more safeguards before it's undertaken as a step.

soffritoes · 23/06/2022 22:39

What was done to him is heartbreaking. If it takes court cases to stop it from happening again, I'm all in favour.

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/06/2022 22:42

That poor man.

I hope he wins his case and I thank him for telling his story. If it stops just one person from making the same mistake then it makes it worthwhile.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 23/06/2022 22:43

I didn't realise the age at the time of the exploration and transition. I'm disappointed by the GP's indifference to the complete absence of available care for detransitioners.

He withdrew into an online world where he felt at peace. There, at 23, he found discussions about gender dysphoria, the fear of living in the wrong sexual body. ‘That’s me, I thought.’

IstayedForTheFeminism · 23/06/2022 22:43

Poor man :(

DeaconBoo · 23/06/2022 22:45

There's a thread on this chap somewhere else - he had a Twitter thread. Awful story.

DeaconBoo · 23/06/2022 22:46

Sorry I've just realised the DM is basically the Twitter thread copied out.

achillestoes · 23/06/2022 22:49

Awful. I question what he might have to go through in order to prove it.

Cleanbedlinen12 · 23/06/2022 22:51

But how come the group that advised him to do it isn’t getting sued?

I agree with resentful

like many others i find this horrifying

ChagSameachDoreen · 23/06/2022 22:53

I'm sorry, but I don't have all that much sympathy. What the hell did he expect?

I'm sick and tired of fighting this. Just let people be led by their convictions and pay the price when it goes to shit.

FOJN · 23/06/2022 22:53

That poor man, winning a court case will never make this right for him.

Harsh but true.
I do feel sorry for him though.

ElEmEnOhPee · 23/06/2022 22:54

I'm sorry but this was major surgery that he didn't have to have, did he not research it? I do feel sorry for him but I completely disagree with him suing the NHS for this.

overnightangel · 23/06/2022 22:56

Cleanbedlinen12 · 23/06/2022 22:51

The point is, the appropriate evaluations and due diligence were not carried out, and those with a pro-trans agenda (looking at you “Mermaids” 😡) are trying to get such checks labelled as “conversion therapy”when the whole reason they are there is so there aren’t tragic stories like this.
But there will continue to be cases like this for as long as the whole “you’re transphobic!” narrative towards anyone who hasn’t drank the kool aid continues.

Georgeskitchen · 23/06/2022 22:57

Sad but predictable. The first of many, I fear

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 23/06/2022 22:58

Adults might be a separate issue but children and young adults (wherever the threshold for that is) can not be expected to pay the price for this in the absence of:

  • appropriate assessment and mental health care (if necessary)

  • decent standardised techniques for these complex surgical interventions.

Me too, it’s horrible, but it’s really not tenable for him to claim he didn’t know what they were going to do.

LemonSwan · 23/06/2022 23:02

I really hope this is just post surgery shock. I say that because I recently had a maternal request c and the moment the pain after surgery kicked in and the subsequent weeks of recovery I did have moments of regret thinking why did I opt to do this to myself. Thankfully now all healed and super pleased with it all and will be having an elective c again if ever pregnant but post surgery shock and recovery regret was real for me.

This was always going to happen one day to somebody but I really hope for this poor chap that it’s not him.

nocoolnamesleft · 23/06/2022 23:03

That's not just gay conversion. That's gay conversion with thrown in mutilation and sterilisation. He may have been an easily led idiot, but he's still a victim. Poor man.

achillestoes · 23/06/2022 23:03

It’s a really important principle that some mentally unwell adult people might be receiving inadequate treatment. This isn’t about perfectly healthy people deciding to have their organs removed. It’s about a social contagion that primarily affects people who are already unwell. Have some compassion.

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/06/2022 23:04

FemmeNatal · 23/06/2022 22:58

Its the drs job to explain and get informed consent from the patient. If the patient doesn't understand what is about to be done then the consent Is not valid.

Seems unfair to portray it like this.

So many people who don't even consider themselves to be transgender think that modern medicine has reach a point where a penis or a vagina can be well replicated by surgery on the opposite sex. Programmes like I Am Jazz are mainstream. People don't know the reality of these medical interventions.

This man was suffering mental ill health like many people who are swept up in the transgender ideology. He thought it was what he needed to be happy. I imagine he did not think that he would be left in the state he has been left in.
