"It also advises that Mike Freer, another minister in the Equalities Office, may resign, and that the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy on LGBT issues, Lord Herbert, may also consider his position"

this sounds too good to be true

Sad that it looks like the UK will fall behind other countries in Europe in terms of LGBT-rights.

AnotherLass · 31/03/2022 18:28

Oh my god this is such an incredible relief. What was being proposed was so dangerous to children, I found it hard to believe they'd go through with it. So pleased.

MoonOnASpoon · 31/03/2022 18:30

I suppose if they filtered out the issue of teens identifying as trans for other reasons and the problems with the affirmative model, and just banned gay conversion therapy, it would be painted as extra transphobia.

That would be the edible gold spray on the cherry on the sprinkles on the icing of the cake that is this week.

I suppose tying the T to the LGB made this very difficult. Tackling conversion therapy for LGB is very different from the T.

Just have a look at the Mike webberley tribunal tweets to see where affirmation with T can lead.

PrelateChuckles · 31/03/2022 18:32

It was so poorly worded, the definition of what conversion therapy even is was woolly and vague and lgb conversion therapy and t conversion therapy seemed to directly contradict each other.

Hopefully if they can actually articulate the problem they want to solve in future they might get somewhere.

DERFDogmaExlusionary · 31/03/2022 18:32

The UK is upholding LGB rights, following the response to the consultation and issues highlighted by the independent Cass review

This is resoundingly good news. Not because trying to forcibly ‘convert’ someone from being one thing to being another isn’t bad (it is) but because the proposed legislation was a shambles and there was no evidence it was addressing a problem that exists currently. Nobody is trying to force people into therapy (that I’m aware of).

Worth a read re a lawyer's perspective of it

AnotherLass · 31/03/2022 18:35

It's a shame they couldn't just keep the gay conversion bit and ditch the gender ID bit. That wouldn't just have been good for gay people, it would have prevented any future attempts to use a ban on gay conversion therapy to smuggle in a gender ID one, you'd never get the latter through on its own. But it's still a huge relief that they aren't going through with the insane gender ID bit.

ChristinaXYZ · 31/03/2022 18:36

Happy dance! LGB conversion is abhorrent but the problems so many of us have discussed on here show how unworkable the ban would have been for those involved with talking to teens about gender.

tabbycatstripy · 31/03/2022 18:36

AnotherLass: but people are overwhelmingly in favour of gay and bisexual rights. Coercing someone into ‘therapy’ by force is already illegal. I don’t see who this was going to help. It was a Trojan horse, that’s all.

Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky · 31/03/2022 18:40

Perhaps those in power might start to see how important it is not to bracket T with LGB but see them as different groups that have issues that sometimes overlap and sometimes do not. A law that was going to ban therapists from exploring issues around gender identity was a poorly worded law

tabbycatstripy · 31/03/2022 18:44

Anneliese Dodds not happy.

Thanks for sharing that, it explains the issue beautifully.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 31/03/2022 18:48

OMG - people have started to say no to Stonewall and the lobby groups! Can you imagine the tantrums there'll be Shock

ResisterRex · 31/03/2022 18:48

Responding to the leak, Downing Street said: “Having explored this sensitive issue in great depth the government has decided to proceed by reviewing how existing law can be deployed more effectively to prevent this in the quickest way possible, and explore the use of other non-legislative measures.”

It was such a poorly - and I mean poorly - drafted consultation plus "evidence" that there is no way they could have proceeded without legal challenge.

A clear-out is needed at the GEO, which presided over this absolute car crash.

tabbycatstripy · 31/03/2022 18:52

Existing law = turns out it’s already illegal to force someone into therapy.

Linguini · 31/03/2022 18:54

The UK really is leading the way in defending LGB, trans and women's rights while challenging all that is harmful in TRA ideology.
Small steps...

Exactly. I'm sure we would all support a ban that was confined to actual gay conversion therapy but, as usual, the wants of the TRAs come before the needs of everyone else.
Artichokeleaves · 31/03/2022 18:58

If this is true: thank God. This would have done a whole lot of harm within a trojan horse, better no new law than bad law.

Possibly they're starting to catch on.

Thewindwhispers · 31/03/2022 19:01

It became an impossibility once Ministers realised that you can’t logically ban ‘converting’ gay to straight unless you also ban attempts to convert straight to gay and gay to trans, both of which are widespread in schools in recent years. And the trans activists were freaking about once this was raised, as so much of their activity can be classed as conversion. Telling butch lesbians they are really trans, telling tomboys they are male etc etc, it’s all ‘conversion’.

It’s a shame really. I’d love to have seen Tavistock, Mermaids and Stonewall answer for all of the conversion therapy they’ve been carrying out on confused children.
